Title: LOTR
Description: what should i collect

farsight - May 30, 2005 09:50 AM (GMT)
i was thinking of collecting a 500pts force of either elves of the last alliance of dwarfs of erebor, which should i collect?

the dwarfs would consist of gimli+ balin, 2 dwarf captains, 8 khazad guard

while the elves would be elrond and gil galad, 16 elves with swords and 8 elven bowmen

i kinda like the dwarfs better as i was gonna have a all heroe force like from the hobbit (even though i would probally get outnumbered and kicked but it will be fun ^_^
. anyone know any good forces to have or anything to stay away from with elves or dwarfs, i will probally have lots of khazad guard added later to represent the defensive bodyguard of my dwarf congregent (basically i don't want to buy troops in blisters when i can get khazad guard in a box set.

go with dwarfs drop gimili and get 7 mor guard

on the eleves if you decide to go with them drop elrond for elf capitan and 7 more elfs with blades

i like the dwarf idea now and will probally buy the khazad guard and balin box, 4 khazad guard blisters, 2 bowmen blisters, and a dwarf kings blister.

this will give me:

balin
2 dwarf captains (or kings)
20 khazad guard
6 bowmen
total: £62
what do you guys think?

i would but normal dwarfs but if the combat one cost the same in money as khazad guard i'll get the guard who are much harder. i know i will get beaten by all cavalry forces but as long as i die honourably i will be happy.

any more tips when playing?

Seems like a pretty good force to me. I wouldn't add Gimli if I were you, nor any more dwarf heroes: Balin is tough enough.

If you so desired, you could drop the captains and get some more normal dwarfs (or khazad guard, whatever floats your boat :D ).

true, i have learnt yesterday after having my ass kicked by a arnor army (equivelent of the army of the dead but cheaper and can have spectral wargs) and from playing (250pts) i learnt that it's better in most cases to have more troops than the enemy to have the advantage. so my idea of a all hero dwarf army has gone down the drain, im gonna hav the maximun numbers of dwarf bowmen i can and the rest as khazad guard with balin (or gimli :fight: ) leading them ^_^

thanbks for the advise guys it's been great, any more is welcome, such as how do i take on a cavalry army cough. rohan. cough or a horde army?

The best way to take on a hoard army is in a crscent moon sao that they can't lap round your army and against cav just shoot the horses.

do you mean formed up in a semi circle shape so you can't get flanked? also i think you randomise when you hit them so i can't target the horses :( .

i was thinking now of adding gandalf or radagast to my force as i can fit gandalf in fluff wise as it is the force sent to dispach of smaug from the lonely mountain so gandalf joins them at the mountain, this will be hard to put against a harradrim army, i'll just say the harridrum got lost goin to the harad pub and ended up in front of my mountain  .

anyway if i had gandalf which is the better model out of fellowship (with hat, my favorite) or khazad dum (no hat) ?

Swordsalot - June 2, 2005 11:02 AM (GMT)
I think the Khazad Dum Gandalf is the best LOTR miniature in the range, as long as you can get him in a blister I think you definitely should (Buying him in the Balrog box when funds are low is a bad idea).

i brought radagast yesterday, even thoguh i should get gandalf the grey but i'll give radagast a go as he is effective against steeds and also has immobilise (i know gandalf does) but radagast has Line of sight to anywhere because of his mastery of birds B) lol.

Anyway i played a dwarf player yesterday, i took 8 khazad guard, balin and a single bowmen. he had gimli, 3 shieldsman, 2 with a two- handed weapon and 5 bowmen (i know he had over 33% with bows) the game was going in his favour as even though he killed none of my guys through shooting, in combat his bowmen kept on seeming to wound my khazad guard :o thats years of experiance for you. but then i switched to my hand wepon and won the combats and the last combat was balin verses a single bowmen and balin beat him, a well fought game which i enjoyed ^_^ .

afterwards i played with my freind who was using a arnor force of 4 revenants (like the king of the dead) and all spectres (we played 1000pts a side with me using radagast so i had 400 pts odd while my mate has 600). and we faced an evil force made up of 5 berzerkers, lots of gobbos, a few uruks. he took down the gobbos while the berzerker scum were left for me to butcher into bitezize pieces, while the revenant turned every other goblin into a spectre  .

a question i have, my mate told me after the battle that dwarfs (khazad guard mainly) can use two hand weapons as the have "axes" and afterwards in brakets it says hand weapons with an s. i don't think they do but do these count as two hand wepons as i am unsure as nothing is stated in the rule book (only two handed axes, and hand wepon etc) please help me!?

There's no such thing as people being armed with two weapons at once. Anyone who does carry 2 weapons will have to choose one.

Also, it is a little unfair playing arnor guys vs. evildoers. The reason they are so much cheaper than army of the dead is that they are designed to face goodies, whose courage is much higher.

farsight - June 4, 2005 09:22 AM (GMT)
thank you for clearing that up swordsalot, i thought i was right ^_^ .

in our game though the arnor were good as they were coming to the dwarfs aid, at the time it seemed to make sense. to be honest with you the new arnor army list is briliant verses everything good or evil. the only force that could stop it would be 13 berzerkers (all the ones made by saruman) and that would not be very fair fun to play. the only way i've managed to beat them is to fight them one on one as we played on a board full of houses, sort of like a village, so i could get my khazad fighting his spectres one on one. this was bad for them as they normally beat them best when they outnumber there enemy.

so really a goblin army should of been good against them as they had more men than the arnor so it was a level playing field. i can see what your saying but i don't agree with you on that one as it was not unfair.

anyway i will be buying many more khazad guard soon for my dwarfs (12) so soon i will have enough to have a 500 pts force, ready for another double games with dwarfs as my ally :fight:
