Ofcourse the book is nececery and basic.now i recomend to buy the battalion first play some battles and slow but steady you will gain expirience in battle and you will decide how your army want to be.(I mean 3-4 battles to how empire works.)

I'd say to buy the book, first of all, and design a couple of army lists. Bounce them around for help and improvement here or on other forums, see which ones you think you like, and collect towards the one you like the most. One of the worst things a new player can do is go out, buy a ton of models, then buy the book, play a game and find that despite his purchase of forty Handgunners, he really hates shooting.

I would go for the starter box because it is the most cost effective. You get 2 regiments of infantry and a warmachine and the rulebook versus the battalion box 1 infantry unit, 1 knight unit, 1 warmachine and 8 loose men who some day might form a unit.
Of course pointwise the starter box is only 443 points vs 707 points in the battalion box if you tool your units up and take Inner Circle Knights but...
With the starter box you too get a bunch of orcs which you alway could trade with another beginner who want to start orcs (this reduces the price even more) or you could keep them and play practising games with them and a friend. You too get all the dices and templates ect. and also handgunners which a included with the starter set can be expensive to buy later because they have no regiment box.
A army book is a must when expanding beyond the basics so once you know the basic rules from a few battles it is time to move on.

i agree with jinU when i first started playing me and my friend both got the starter set and i swapped him my orcs for his empire and we both had balanced small forces to go through the beginner course with. Also i agree, buy the book as well after the starter set as normally i write about 20 army lists before i go out and actually buy the models. I suggest writing a 500 point list and a 1000point list and then buying the models, try and make the 500pt part of the 100pt then you have a decent sized army to have fun and learn with :thumb: post all your final copies of army lists on the website and let us help you with your army selection and how to create a fun balanced force :thumb:

I think i am going to buy the rule book and then the army book and go from their
the main reason i might go this way is because the hobby stre i go to has a bargin which is full of empire which i can get for little less then half price
would this be a good way to start

yes, get your rule book and army book first. Write a few army lists then get some stuff for your army, i would buy 2 core and hero first, then expand from their. :thumb:
