Title: Slayers
Description: Are they any good???

I've noticed that most people don't use slayers at all. Personally, I think the models look great and would most definitely use them if I were to field a dwarven army. But really... how well do they do on the battlefield???

I havnt used them my self but ive fought against them and seen them played...their ability to increase their strenght to the toughness of their opponents makes them great agaist tougher opponets such as trolls /giants/ othe big hard to kill monsters & their unbreakable so they make a great tarpit....but the fact that they wear abosolutly no armor ad have o saving throws makes them very fragile in my opinion...a turn or 2 of archers popping slayes reduces their numbers very quickly
their fragileness, i would think, & high point cost is why most players dont jump out ad buy them when they could be buying IBs, Hammers, or Cannons which IMO are much better

You are right. But is the only troop in dwarf army list who has access to 2nd weapon.(It's funny, yesterday i was thinking of them :P )
But they have many uses exept of take care of giants & trolls. You can tie up a fear causing enemy troop. Also as Oric said only for their name are an arrow magnet, so your rest army will be afected less.
If you can't aford the points for slayers but you are sure that your enemy will put a nasty dragon, just put on your army a dragon slayer with the M.R of swiftness and you will see the dragon at the end of the game dead.
Slayers of all kind are good.
It's good idea to buy some. :thumb:

I love slayers, they rock, i have about 2 units of them, most archers wound on 5s with em...i.e high elves plus they never run. and i kinda just keep them back until i can just jump at people with them, their without question my best unit in my army.

It depends on your strategy. With dwarves it is usually important to guard your flanks. This is true for every army, but even more so for dwarves, because their armies often consist of a line of hard infantry units that are hard to beat when charged from the front. So the enemy will rely on flank charges. The dwarven lack of manouverability makes it hard to protect their flanks though.
Slayers are great for this purpose due to their unbreakableness.
I dont think that the special slayer rule is very effective, because your opponent will keep his tough, low-armoured things away from them. But slayers are also good against cavalry. This might not appear so at first, because most cav has low toughness and high armour - exactly the things slayers dont want to encounter. But their unbreakableness outweighs this, as they wont run after being charged and most cav sucks after the first round of combat and will be broken by flank charging them.
Their unbreakableness also makes slayers good against fear-causing enemies.
I usually use slayers in units of 12-14 in a 6x2 or 7x2 formation. They are unbreakable anyway, so they dont need ranks and should try to maximize their attacks. I try to include three or four giant slayers, but usually only have the points left to take one or two.
I want to try using a long single row of 16-20 slayers that screen away my entire battle line. Dont know if it works, but its worth a try. :)
Slayers have two big disadvantages. Their lack of armour is a pain and makes them very vulnerable. Simple arrows can really hurt them. And while LD9 makes them quite stabil, they CAN run due to panic.
And their low strength sucks too. I dont understand why they are not allowed the option of a great weapon. The explanation of the slayer rule in the army book even uses slayers with great weapons as an example. Why do this when they are not allowed a great weapon anyway?! <_<
All in all, I think slayers are a good unit, that have an important role to play in a dwarven army.
By the way, Lord of Dwarves, note that slayers are 0-1, so unless you use the SoC slayer list you cant have two units.
Omg, my post is so long again. Im so sorry. :(

slayers are unbreakable, they wont run because of panic, they never ever run :) my brother uses a unit in his army and with great succes. I once saw those 14 or so slayers stand up to two units of devotees of slaanesh + characters. for 3 rounds they held before the last slayer went down. at that time almost 100 attacks had been thrown at them, not bad IŽd say :)
play a SoC slayer army and youŽll see what slayers are all about. even with a shooty army you wont win unless he throws badly on his "look snorri, trolls!" rolls. you will need 3-4 rounds of shooting to make a difference. oh and doomseekers have to be one of the cheesiest units in the whole game ^_^ one of those maniacs can single handedly take on entire units...and WIN <_<

I dont think being unbreakable includes being immune to psychology, or am I getting something mixed up here? Im at work so I dont have the rulebook here.

well, I belive they are immune to everything the same way as undead are. that is how I think it is anyway. IŽll be checkin it out tho.

They do well suited to certain roles, and who they're facing. They generally do well against high toughness, lightly armoured things (such as monsters and ogres) and getting several units stuck in combat with them. They do bad against such units as elven cavalry and handgunners.they are susceptible to misile fire with no armour, but can dish out a lot of attacks with 2 weapons each and thee ability to take as many champions as you want (but i would only ever have up to 3) .I would take a unit in every dwarf army, they're versatile, different, fun , useful and suited to dwarfs (being able to hold flankers up).Ginger and tatoos are also great fun to paint, which makes slayers good on the modelling aspect as well (and you can undefcoat them white for a change)
