Title: Dwarf FAQ

King Ulrik Flamebeard - April 16, 2005 05:46 PM (GMT)
Q. How does the Slayer skill work if the model is armed
with a Rune of Might?

A. As noted in the description of the Slayer skill,
Slayers' Strength is only increased after modifications
for weapons. In this situation, the Slayer's Strength
will only be increased if his doubled Strength is still
less than that of his opponent's Toughness (which is
unlikely since that would mean the opponent's
Toughness was 9 or 10!)
S. Warhammer Chronicles 2004 page 116

*****

Q. It has been brought to our attention that Dwarf handguns
are not listed as ‘move or fire’ weapons. Is this correct?

A. Correct! Dwarf handguns may move and fire.
S. Warhammer Chronicles 2004 page 116

*****

Q. Can Miners charge on the turn they arrive on the table?

A. No! The Dwarf army book states "In the Movement phase
of the turn when they arrive, Miners can enter the
battlefield from any table edge and will be treated exactly
like a unit that has pursued an enemy off the table
in the previous turn (see page 76 of the Warhammer
rulebook)." Page 76 of the Warhammer rulebook under
Pursuit Off The Table states "The unit may NOT charge, as
it has missed its opportunity to declare charges,
but may move its full Move that turn, and it may shoot
and otherwise participate in the game as normal."
S. Dwarf Army Book page 11 / Rulebook page 76

*****

Q. Can Dwarfs always march?

A. No. While Dwarfs may march even if there are enemies
within 8" at the start of the movement phase due to their
Relentless rule, they follow the other restrictions
on marching such as not being able march through difficult
terrain, etc.
S. Dwarf Army Book page 6

*****

Q. When units gain ‘special’ combat resolution bonuses, for
example from the War Banner or the Rune of Battle, how many
bonuses can they get? Are they cumulative? For example, if
three Dwarf units are in the same combat and within 12" of
the Master Rune of Stromni Redbeard, is that +3 combat
resolution?

A. All individual bonuses are cumulative, so a Dwarf War
machine with the Stalwart Rune and within 12" of the Master
Rune of Stromni Redbeard would get +2 combat resolution.
However, note that all units in a combat use the same
combat resolution score - it’s not worked out individually.
Thus, even if there were three Dwarf units in the same
combat, the bonus is only applied once rather than per
unit (so the answer is they get +1).

*****

Q. What benefit does an Engineer provide when he is joined
to a Bolt Thrower?

A. A Bolt Thrower which has been joined by an Engineer may
use his BS when rolling to hit.
S. Warhammer Chronicles 2004 page 125

*****

Q. How exactly does the loss of crew affect the Organ Gun?

A. The Organ Gun requires a full crew of three Dwarfs to
work it properly. If one crewman is slain the other two
can just about get by and the gun may fire as normal. If
two crewmen are slain, the remaining crewman won't be able
to operate the weapon properly - the gun can only be fired
every other turn. Should all the crew be slain, the gun is
useless.
S. Warhammer Chronicles 2004 page 125

*****

Q. What is the correct description of the Rule of Form?

A. Weapon runes can only be inscribed on weapons, Armour
runes can only be inscribed on armour, Runic Standards can
only be inscribed on standards, Engineering runes can only
be inscribed on war machines, and Talismanic runes can only
be inscribed on talismans. This is called the Rule of Form
by Runesmiths. You cannot inscribe Armour runes on a
cannon nor can you place Engineering runes on an axe.
S. Warhammer Chronicles 2004 page 125

*****

Q. Does a Dwarf army without the Anvil of Doom receive 2
power dice in their magic phase?

A. Yes. All armies receive a base of 2 power dice in thier
magic phase. The Dwarfs may use these dice to attempt to
dispel remains in play spells.
S. Rulebook pages 135,139

Q. Where can I find the rules for the Blade of Shining Death,
the "Dwarfs Only" magic item from the Albion campaign?

A. In Warhammer Chronicles 2003

*****

Q. Where can I find the rules for the Dwarf character, High
King - Thorgrim Grudgebearer?

A. In the Warhammer Annual 2002

DWARF RUNES

Q. Can you place runes on a Great Weapon?

A. Yes, you can place runes on a Great Weapon, but it is
a waste of points. The Dwarf book states "Note that
although Dwarfs may inscribe runes on weapons, none of the
bonus/penalties for the original weapon apply". This means
that if you place a rune on a Great Weapon it loses its +2S
modifier and the "strikes last" penalty.
S. Dwarf Army Book page 20

*****

Q. The Master Rune of Swiftness does not include the phrase
"...strikes first in close combat, even before enemies that
have charged.", which is found in the other magic items which
'strike first'. Was this intentional or an oversight?

A. All of the 'strike first' rules that apply to other weapons
(before chargers, roll off against similar ability, etc) apply
to the Master Rune of Swiftness.

Q. May a character armed with a Runic Weapon inscribed with the
Master Rune of Flight throw the weapon after marching?

A. Yes

*****

Q. May a character armed with a Runic Weapon inscribed with the
Master Rune of Flight throw the weapon into a close combat?

A. No
S. Gav Thorpe - Warhammer Design Team

*****

Q. In which phase is a Runic Weapon inscribed with the Master
Rune of Flight thown at the enemy? The Shooting phase or the
Close Combat phase?

A. Shooting
S. Gav Thorpe - Warhammer Design Team

*****

May a character armed with a Runic Weapon inscribed with
the Master Rune of Flight declare Stand and Shoot as a charge
reaction and throw the Runic Weapon at the charging unit?

A. No.
S. Gav Thorpe - Warhammer Design Team

*****

Q. Do magic items (or other abilities) which protect against
"missiles" or shooting attacks provide protection against a
Runic Weapon inscribed with the Master Rune of Flight?

A. Yes
S. Gav Thorpe - Warhammer Design Team

*****

Q. If you have made a re-roll of the Artillery dice due to a
Misfire result on the 'to hit' roll for a cannon, does the
Rune of Forging allow you to also re-roll the Artillery dice
on the 'to bounce' roll if you are unfortunate enough to roll
a Misfire there as well?

A. Yes. The Rune's description does not prohibit this and as
it is a separate roll, it does not violate the prohibition
against re-rolling the dice a second time.

Interpretation

*****

Q. What is the correct description of the Master Rune of
Breaking?

A. Replace the second paragraph with "If the Dwarf
character scores a hit against an enemy with a magic
weapon, the enemy's magic weapon is destroyed immediately.
S. Warhammer Chronicles 2004 page 125

*****

Q. What is the correct description of the Rune of
Reloading?

A. The war machine can shoot every turn, as long as there
is at least one crewman left, even if it has rolled a 2-3
on the Misfire table in the previous turn. Multiples have
no effect.
S. Warhammer Chronicles 2004 page 125

*****

Q. What is the correct description of Flakkson's Rune of
Seeking?

A. Replace the second paragraph with "Bolt throwers only.
Each rune adds +1 to the bolt thrower's to hit rolls
against targets with the Fly special ability.
S. Warhammer Chronicles 2004 page 125

*****

Q. How exactly does the Dwarf Rune of Slowness work?

A. The Rune comes into play when an enemy unit declares
a charge on a Dwarf unit containing a standard with this
rune.

1) The Dwarf player rolls a D6 and this is subtracted from
the attacking players charge distance.

2) The distance is measured to see if the charge is
successful. If the charge is successful then play
continues as normal.

3) If the charge is not successful, then it counts a
failed charge and the unit moves its normal move. However,
keep in mind the general rule that units must stay at
least 1 inch apart - this means that if the charging
unit's normal move is far enough that it would contact
the Dwarfs anyway, then you stop the chargers 1 inch
away from the Dwarf unit.

*****

Q. Does the Rune of Reloading negate the effects of The
The Rain Lord, Earthshaker, or other similar items which
state that a player must roll a D6 to ascertain if his
war machine is eligible to shoot?

A. No, the Rune of Reloading does not negate the effects
of these items. The Rune of Reloading allows the war
machine to fire every turn in situations where crew members
have been lost and also negates the effect of a
malfunction or disabled result on the Misfire charts.
S. Direwolf FAQ Council Interpretation /
Warhammer Chronicles 2004 page 125

*****

Q. Is a weapon with the Master Rune of Flight considered a
missile attack when thrown? Can you march move and throw the
weapon?

A. The Dwarf can target any model it likes within range (this
means it can pick characters out of units), and the Dwarf can
throw the weapon even if it marched. However, in regards to
things like special ward saves against missile attacks, this IS
classed as a missile attack.
S. Anthony Reynolds - Warhammer Design Team (Online Q&A
on the Games Workshop Warhammer Forum)

*****

Q. Does the Rune of Burning have to be placed on a
warmachine to make the attacks count as magical?

A. No. Any engineering rune inscribed on the warmachine
makes the attacks from the warmachine count as magical.
S. Dwarf Army Book page 22

*****

Q. In cases where dispel dice are generated against spells
cast against specific Dwarf units with protective Runes,
should we treat the dispel dice like Magic Resistance dice?

A. Yes, these extra dispel dice should be treated just like
Magic Resistance. We will be amending the offending items
in reprints as they come up.
S. Gav Thorpe - Warhammer Design Team

*****

Q. If a warmachine has the Valiant Rune (which makes the
crew Unbreakable as long as the machine is not destroyed),
can a Dwarf character join the crew?

A. Per the Warhammer Annual 2002, Unbreakable units
cannot be joined by characters except those characters which
are already Unbreakable.
S. Warhammer Annual 2002 page 5

*****

GYROCOPTER

Q. Is a Gyrocopter classified as a warmachine?

A. No.
S. Gav Thorpe - Warhammer Design Team

*****

Q. Can a Gyrocopter declare Stand and Shoot as a charge
reaction?

A. No.
S. Gav Thorpe - Warhammer Design Team

*****

Q. In the description of the Gyrocopter, there are two
conflicting rules. In one part of the description it states
says that if a Gyrocopter is broken in combat, that it then
crashes. In another part it states that if a Gyrocopter
is beaten in combat it crashes. So which causes the crash,
beaten in combat or broken?

A. A Gyrocopter crashes if beaten in combat (which with US1
is going to be virtually every time it gets into combat,
so don't do it!).
S. Gav Thorpe - Warhammer Design Team

*****

ANVIL OF DOOM

Q. Could you explain how the "crew" of a Dwarf Anvil of
Doom works in close combat?

A. If you imagine that they form up just like a war machine
crew and work out who is in contact with whom on that basis,
you won't go far wrong. It may even be worthwhile having a
spare Runesmith and a couple of suitable guard models to
use for this purpose.
S. Warhammer Chronicles 2004 page 116

*****

Q. Does the Rune of Fire from an Anvil of Doom count as a
flaming attack?

A. Yes.
S. Anthony Reynolds - Warhammer Design Team (Online Q&A
on the Games Workshop Warhammer Forum)

*****

Q. What is the correct way to allocate shooting hits vs.
the Anvil of Doom?

A. Shooting hits vs. the Anvil of Doom should be allocated
in the same way as they are vs. war machines (ie 1-4 Anvil,
5-6 Crew). Discount any hits vs. the Anvil itself. To take
into account the protection offered by the Anvil, the
Runelord gains a 4+ Ward save against any form of missiles
(including magic missiles).
S. Gav Thorpe - Warhammer Design Team

Questions regarding Tomb Kings
1. Can I use my Master Rune of Balance to take a power dice?
A. All armies generate 2 power dice. You may use the Rune of Balance againest these two dice, but all other dice that TK use may not be taken.

2. Is the Casket of Souls a Bound spell Item?
A No. (Gav Thorpe, Tomb King Book)

Questions regarding Battle Standard Bearer
1. What magic items can he take?
A. BSB may take One the following:

* A Runic banner
* Magic items upto a combined points of 50pts.
