It took me a while but I finally got to try my Pirates list. It kicked ass (wiped out a Lizardmen army)! and I love it! However, my opponent was saying that my original list was a bit too shooty. My 24 handgunners killed his Carnosaur! Anyway, I thought I'd re-do the list a bit as I was also concerned that when my opponent DID reach my lines, I found that it was too fragile. So here's my new list for your critique!

My other option was to reduce the Slayer Pirates to 16 and exchange the Leadbelchers for 3 Maneaters (heavy armour, 1 w/ Cathayan sword, 2 w/ GW). What do you think?

You can only have 2 rare in a 2k army, and if I'm not mistaken, you have 4. Aren't the slayer pirates, leadbelchers, and both units of duelists DoW and thus, rare?

Venusius - April 16, 2005 09:21 AM (GMT)
Not for a Marienburg Mercenary armylist. All DoW and RoR are considered core with the exception of the OK Ogre units which are rare. This list is based on the Marienburg Appendix list.

RasputinII - April 16, 2005 10:06 AM (GMT)
Isn't the Marienburg list unofficial?

Venusius - April 16, 2005 05:45 PM (GMT)
It's an Empire Appendix List. You can check it out in the Empire Army Book in the last few pages. Canadian GW GTs allow Appendix lists and so do my gaming circle. ^_^

I like it, the Slayer Pirates really add to the piraty feel. It also looks very effective. Do find you need the two big detachments of free company? I personally like 6 handgunners as well as a combat detachment and they fit the fluff. Of course you're trying to trim down the shooting but they're pirates! there should be lots of shooting. An Engineer would really fit the fluff (Master Gunner) but they really are quite useless.

Venusius - April 17, 2005 10:29 PM (GMT)
Yeah. I'm cutting down on the shooty-ness of my army. I really felt bad when I shot down a Carnosaur on the 1st turn w/ 24 handgunners! The 2 detachments is for redundancy purposes - that way if I lose one, I still have another one in reserve! ;) Most opponents try and get rid of your detachments before charging down the parent unit.

As for the engineer, I've played around w/ it but it's just too expensive for a character. A complete waste of points IMO.

Anyway, I've re-edited my list and I think it's even better. Basically, I've reduced the Swordsmen (+detachments) into 20 (10) models each and reduced the Leadbelchers into 3 models. I then added a unit of 3 Ironguts models. I believe the new change add more bite to the army as a whole! ^_^

I like the list, especially since you now have the Ironguts for added punch in close combat. You're lacking somewhat in mobile units like fast cavalry, though -- what are you going to use to take out enemy war machines? Also, will you be using those Slayer Pirates as flank guards?
All in all, though, a good list. :thumb:

Venusius - April 20, 2005 09:54 PM (GMT)
The fast unit was the challenge. Until now I've no ideas what fast unit I can put. Horses are out of the question since horses would be impractical in the ship. I guess my duellists will have to take care of the warmachines and lone wizard problem but it'll be a challenge as they're not that fast. The cannons might be able to snipe at the warmachines though. hehehe. :D

As for the Slayers, they can do anything. They're not just for holding flanks, they can actually be my middle too (being unbreakable and all).

GustavusAdolphus - May 3, 2005 09:56 PM (GMT)
Sounds Good!

Say, do you have the painted pirate army?

Venusius - May 4, 2005 05:43 AM (GMT)
No I'm sorry to say I don't have the whole army painted. I have mostly the Empire troops - unpainted, some primed but assembled. The special units like Leadbelchers and Dwarf Slayers were new additions to the list and unfortunately I had to use other models to proxy them (ie. I use dwarf hammerers and kroxies for them).

It's a fairly new project of mine and it'll not get done 'til like a year or so! I'm so slow! So in the meantime, proxy and unpainted models for now.
