Title: Chaos Dwarf Revival!
Description: You know you still love them.

wyrmling_x - April 8, 2005 05:24 PM (GMT)
In an effort to revive a worthy forum (and to get people thinking about the "best" army ever ;)), I bring your attentions once more to Chaos Dwarves, our friends and big-hatted excuses to convert! I'll admit it - I love Chaos Dwarfs. Most of the minis are apalling, but the concept behind them is very appealing to me. Plus, I utterly love the Great Taurus model. The fact that GW may never ever remake them doesn't much faze me - they're too cool to pass up!

I'm now in the planning stages of my Chaos Dwarf army, trying to figure out what models to use, what rules need to be adapted to fit 6th ed, etc. After perusing the Ravening Hordes list, I've noticed many things that are missing. Also, the Army Builder program seems to include things that aren't in the RH list (ex. command groups). In terms of functionality, the Army Builder list seems to be more like it "should be" in this edition of WHFB (though I really think the Great Taurus & Lammasu should cause Fear/Terror). For those interested, though, the Ravening Hordes list can be found here.

I've been putting a lot of thought into the miniatures, as well. I wouldn't dare using the Big Hat models, and so must come up with a way to convert. My ideas:

Chaos Dwarf Warrior:

- new Chaos Warrior heads
- modified Chaos and Dwarf Warrior weapons
- Dwarf Warrior torsos
- greenstuff Babylonian "sausage" beards
- spiky bits
- Chaos Marauder shields

Here's an example of a Chaos Dwarf conversion. Any idea where that hammer's from?

Bull Centaur:

- archive Bull Centaur torso (ebay)
- dwarf-half will be made from the above conversion, minus the legs

Hobgoblins

- converted Goblins of varying types (foot troop and wolf rider)

Sneaky Gits

- converted Gnoblars

Things like the Great Taurus and Lammasu I'm ordering through ebay, since I like their models. Cannons, etc. will pretty much be made from scratch with things like piping and plasticard. Characters will be converted in a similar (but more elaborate) manner as the Warriors. The arrival of Ogre Kingdoms means I get to use something awesome like Iron Guts to fill up my Rare slots. The only unit I'm worried about are the Blunderbusses, since both the old miniatures and the current Dwarf Thunderers are just plain ugly (not to mention hard to convert). Anyone have suggestions? Also, I'm ordering the Hellcannon crew, just to get some ideas for conversions. That, and I simply cannot find a close-up pic of them. Plus I'm addicted to buying minis. :D

My challenge after actually collecting the army will, of course, be trying to figure out how they play. I've come up with a little 1k list, just to see what people have to say.

1 Chaos Dwarf Hero (GW, HA, Shield): 70 pts

19 Warriors (HW, GW, HA, Shield, Cmnd): 239 pts
12 Blunderbusses (HW, HA, Blunderbuss): 144 pts
12 Blunderbusses (HW, HA, Blunderbuss): 144 pts
25 Hobgoblins (HW): 50 pts
25 Hobgoblins (HW): 50 pts
10 Hobgoblin Wolf Riders (HW, Bows): 140

2 Hobgoblin Bolt Throwers: 60

5 Bull Centaurs (GW, HA): 105

* * * * *

Now, this list might be total crap, but that's fine for now. I essentially have two armies to get used to with Chaos Dwarves: Dwarfs and O&G.
Any comments/critiques/tips/witticisms about my idea?

Yeah, looks to be a good Idea,I saw this guy on a now-dead forum who tried to novert his own chaos dwarf army, but eventually gave up.The best way to convert 1 IMO is the way you described, because thats what the otherguy did.I think, dwarfs evilized could have a lot of potential for good models given half a chance.

And for people who don't want to buy those chaos warrior helmets, you can also just put horns on the helmets, and convert the weapons a bit.
And offcourse paint them in Red and black.

They are my favorite army, but just too expensive too buy, and I want a real army book, otherwise I can't play :(

The only problem with the helmets is that a bunch of bodies come with them. *duh* I'm going to ask around Bartertown for "spare heads", but I have my doubts given the quantity I require. I'd love to buy the Chaos Warriors, but when it's only for the heads and weapons, it's not really worth it. I'm so torn! I'm so tempted to just buy them, and convert the bodies.

Everyting is nice but i have a question for you.Why chaos dwarfs won't come out from gw?

AS I said the exact post before it, you can also just put horns on their helmets, and convert their weapons a small bit (of dwarf warriors).
They also offcourse need to be painted in Red/black.

The biggest CD community I know is this one:

http://www.chaosdwarf.com/cd/

If you need any onfi on them , go to that site!!

Yeah, I read your tip on the helmets, but I don't think that would give them the same sinister feel to them that a Chaos Warrior helmet might. It all comes down to personal preference, I suppose, and how much work you want to put into it. I think that if I'm going to do the project, I'm going all the way, and that means Chaos Warrior heads (one way or another).

Thanks for the link, I'll definitely check that out. :thumb:

The hammer on the CMON conversion looks to be the one from the old Chaos Warrior sprues. I'm not sold on the giant cape on him, though. ;)

Let me throw in my modeling advice.

Now for your hobgoblins, use Gnoblars, They look much more slavelike then normal goblins, and for sneaky gits, i'd just sculpt a green stuff hood (like a night gobbo's hood) over a gnoblar head.

the other thing is, dont get the torsos off of Ebay, just buy the Blood Bowl Bull Centaurs.

those are just my oppinions as to what would look good.

wyrmling_x - May 2, 2005 02:41 AM (GMT)
The Bull Centaurs I got off ebay were about half the price of their Blood Bowl counterparts. ;)

Ross - May 8, 2005 06:43 PM (GMT)
Hobgoblins are supposed to be large gobbos, not stunted gobbos with ugly faces.I would just use the nightgobbo box for hobbogobbos.

For blunderbusses, browse the chaos dwarf site to see what you can find. I'm pretty sure someone used golf tees on dwarf warriors, putting the tees on instead of the top of the crossbow. The blunderbusses in the Empire Militia sprues would also work.

Aye, but I think its 1 per sprue, right? s oyu'd have to be piss rich to make an army that way.

Call me stupid, but I don't think some of them need any real conversion at all:

Warriors:
Dwarf Warriors/Thunderers minus any runes etc.
Evil-looking colour scheme.

Hobgoblins:
Just normal Goblins, straight from the box - why not?

Death Rocket:
Can't really do that... I thought about using the new Dwarf Cannon and adding green stuff to make the spare shells look bigger, but that may just fail.

Sneaky Gits:
Again, a bit tricky, but why not simply Night Gobbos? It could work... (just say the other hand weapon is under their robes).

Bull Centaurs:
The lower halves of the current Bull Centaurs with Dwarf Warriors top halves, again with an evil-looking colour scheme.

Earthshaker:
No idea about this.

Uzkul Werit - January 29, 2006 08:45 PM (GMT)
The Earthshaker can be easily made from the 40K Ork Lobba model. Just get some Dawi Zharr crew.
