Title: I finally played my first REAL battle last night!
Description: ...butit had to be against Chaos ...
Snafu, King of Kartouche - March 23, 2005 07:49 PM (GMT)
Warning! This turned out to be a pretty long post.
So! After about a year I finally move back home to Calgary where people play something other than 40K and I check out the local store (Great White Games) and Tuesday is Warhammer night!
I have only ever played a few times against a friend at around 450pts so I'm looking forward to this 1500pter!
But no one friggin showed up! So I play the staff, Brent and he chooses Chaos. Heavy armoured chaos warriors vs my skellies? Sounds like fun!

This army was assembled in the TK legion creator (which crashed before I could completely validate it when it started thinking my warriors were Ushabti/Chariots...yes I use Windows lol) so I'm pretty sure I can use 2 warbanners.
Total 1497 pts
Now this is all I have assembled / painted. I fully intend to buy scorpions and put my catapault together. Feel free to suggest anything else though.
The archers & Heirophant are supposed to be on a hill. Here's how the field of battle looked:
Marauders..Warriors..Sorcerer..Marauder Horsemen.Warrios w/ General..Slaves
HOUSE.................................FOREST..............................................................
.........................................................................................................------------
.........Chariots..Ushabti...............Skeletons w/Prince..Heavy Cavalry./ Archers...
..............Priest................................................................................/Heirophant
Chaos Turn 1:
Chaos makes a general advance. Sorcerer blows up a heavy cavalry skellie. Makes an Ushabti attack itself for one wound. Both I failed to dispel.
TK Turn 1:
Because of the house, the chariots make a wonky charge into his Marauders. 2 chariots hit the Marauders and one hits the Warriors. The Ushabti move towards the warriors. The Skeleton Spearmen, led by their Prince, boldly charge the horsemen, who flee. The Cavalry move forward to protect their flank and the bowmen draw their arrows...
They fire at the Slaves who are heading right towards them. Under a hail of arrows, one slave stumbles and falls dead.
The liche priest on the left successfully wills the Ushabti to charge into the chaos warriors who in their terror will only hit on 6's. The Heirophant wills the smiting of more slaves and the archers fire once more, killing two!
The chariots run over six enemies ALL OF WHICH were COMPLETELY FINE! The steeds and spearmen attack, managing to kill a marauder. The Ushabti stike down a warrior. I lose combat and my chariots and Ushabti both take a wound.
Snafu says: I read Plasmapuff's articles and I'm trying not to get charged. So far so good! I am using a Refused Flank strategy but being outnumbered...it's only a matter of time! Here we go with Turn Two...
Chaos
The Marauder Horsemen rally after fleeing and charge right back into my skeletons and Prince. (So much for not getting charged!) The Chaos Sorcerer charges into the flank of my Ushabti and the warriors on the right flank my skeletons. (Knew it was gonna happen eventually) The slaves keep advancing towards my archers
The Chaos General issues a challenge to Prince Snafubar, son of the King, Snafu. He answers the call, and the two leaders stare each other down. The General strikes a mighty blow causing a wound to the Prince. Snafubar strikes but is unable to penetrate the sturdy Chaos Armour.
TK
The Heavy Cavalry charge into the flank of the warriors (who eat panic for breakfast) who are flanking the skeletons. This combat is only going to get uglier too!
The Skeleton archers fire twice upon the slaves killing a few more.
The priest on the left gets the Ushabti to attack, killing one warrior. The horses out perform the chariots killing a couple of marauders.
Inspired by the archers, the Skeletons miraculously survive the horseman charge unscathed and kill one in reply. The warriors actually do kill a couple of skeletons. The cavalry killed a chaos warrior and saved on all of chaos's hits. I lose a couple of skellies to combat resolution but no big deal.
The Ushabti continue to suck, killing nothing. Still got sand in their joints I guess.
Turn 3:
By now the slaves have been riddled with arrows but they finally make their move. The slaves charge into the back of the Heavy Cavalry!
Chaos beats the crap out of the Ushabti and chariots. After resolution I have one of each left. The skeletons continue to hold their own killing two horsemen. The warriors and slaves kill a couple of my Cavalry.
The battle between the generals goes poorly for the Tomb Kings. Despite his armour and ward saves ( of which none were successful) Snafubar falls before the Chaos General. The General raises his arms in victory but quickly clutches his chest and fell dead. Beware the curse, all who oppose the Tomb Kings!
Snafu says: OMG my entire left flank is about to be crushed and the spearskellies other flank exposed to two units! Damn you chaos armour saves! I totally expected the slaves were going to attack the archers, not the cavalry.
At least the curse killed his General.
Turn 4:
The Chaos marauders and warriors wipe out the Ushabti and Chariots overrunning onto my half of the table. Great. <_<
The chaos sorcerer runs down my liche priest and kills him instanlty.
The Tomb King army needs to swing the tide of battle quick!
In a move of sheer guts, the archers charge themselves off the hill into the back of their longtime rivals, the slaves. The slaves, face to face with the unit that cut their numbers in half, panic and flee directly into the heavy cavalry who cuts them down. The warriors embroiled in the heated battle with the spearskellies and heavy cavalry realize they are totally surrounded as the archers plow into their rear too. The warriors panic and flee for their lives, only to be ran down by the archers.
The skeleton spearmen win a combat verses the horsemen, who unlike their allies, stand their ground.
Turn 5:
Chaos realizes things are going badly on the right side of the battle and begins moving the marauders and warriors on the left towards the Spearskellies.
The Heavy Cavalry charge into the flank of what is left of the horsemen. The archers reform into a 4x4 block in preparation to fight the approaching warriors. But first they kill the Chaos Sorcerer who had charged into the fray :D
The Heirophant moves off of the archer's hill and places himself in position for the next round of battle.
In combat the horsemen are slain on the spears of Snafubars warriors. And there is much rejoicing in the ranks!
Turn 6
The forces of Chaos gaze upon the thiry odd mob of skeletons and remaining cavalry, forseeing their doom. The archers charge the warriors with the Cavalry hitting them in the flanks. The spearskellies moved to face the marauders, but at this point my opponent conceeded defeat!
Snafu says: There you have it. Not bad for a first effort. I made some mistakes but Brent was pretty helpful although a little shocked. I was a little shocked I won against Chaos too!
The chariots and Ushabti were massacred which was a little surprising. The spearskellies soaked up a lot of damage and held up 3 units which went according to plan. The archers will recieve some huge commendation from the Prince, once the Heirophant gathers his pieces up and puts him back together. They killed the unit of slaves, a unit of chosen warriors, the sorcerer and didn't take a single casualty!

Looks like an official minor victory!
After the battle Brent said I should have hidden the Ushabti behind the chariots and used them to flank the maruaders or warriors. What do you guys think?
He also said that I should have taken Tomb Guard instead of a large unit of skeletons but Plasmapuff and I would disagree with him there :D Thanks for the TACT's Plasmapuff!
Any other suggestions?

im so happy.
take that better WS than my high elves!!!!!!
i think you probably shouldve had a unit of infantry on the left flank.
especially if you were afraid of being flanked.

Can't charge on the turn you rally. Bad staff member, unless I'm interpreting it wrong.
LordChilipepa - March 23, 2005 10:52 PM (GMT)
1. No, you definitely cannot use two War Banners. I know army builders let you do it, but that is a universal flaw due to the drop-down menu format they use. If you go onto two Tomb Princes, you'll be able to select the same magic weapon for each of them as well.
2. There're no such thing as "Slaves" in the Chaos army. Someone was having you on, mate...
3. Glad to see someone else taking up the silly names baton... I like "Komatos" :D
Snafu, King of Kartouche - March 24, 2005 06:01 AM (GMT)
Great I was wondering about those banners. I'll watch out for it next time I play.
The way he explained it to me was that rallying took place before the movement phase so that they could charge. Anyone know if that's right?
I have no idea what the slaves might be...that's what he was calling them. It's possible he might not have 100% known what he was doing. He said my Cavalry could make a march move and I've only ever heard and read the opposite, that no TK unit can march, period.

No, you cant move on the turn you ralley. Unless it is fast cav that chose to flee as a response in the previous turn, assuming they ralley they can march/move...i dont know if they can shoot or charge though.
Swordsalot - March 24, 2005 01:48 PM (GMT)
Shooting should definitely be ok.
For fast cavalry, I think charging is allowed after rallying (as far as I remember, fast cavalry suffer no penalties for rallying after voluntarily fleeing)
Mioumboy - March 24, 2005 06:45 PM (GMT)
According to the book, Fast Cavalry won't be able to charge on the turn they rally, since you declare your charge before you rally your troops. But it is said that if they rally after fleeing from a charge, they are free to move, and probably free to shoot as normal as well.
Snafu, King of Kartouche - March 24, 2005 07:51 PM (GMT)
I think Mioumboy has it there.
Can someone please confirm that no TK can make a march move?
Mioumboy - March 24, 2005 08:53 PM (GMT)
The Armie Book is clear about that, in the special undead rules : Undead cannot make a march move.
