Title: Oh god, it's going to be a bad summer
Prince Cal - February 25, 2005 04:15 PM (GMT)
I'm not sure were to put this but I'll put it here because it's rather impotant in the world of gw. Anyway back on track.
Okay, the fact is I think the main campaign in the summer will be a
Lord of the ringscampaign (I put it in such a huge font because it's shocking. I say this for 3 main reasons and they are:
1:Apparently it's the 3rd main game so obviously they'll be doing campaigns for it and we've not had a major campaign since it was released.
2: It's sales a lagging. They need something to get people taking part in it and whatbetter way than by a campaign? People will want to take part right   ? So they'll purchase lots of lord of the rings hopefully.
3: I found this:
the evidence. They're giving people an order of battle booklet for the summer campaign and this makes me think they're pushing it to get intest.
So enough of me going on, am I crazy or getting onto something here?
Kinggong - February 25, 2005 06:51 PM (GMT)
Dman damn damn damn that's all I can say. I hate lord of the rings and would either like a 40k or fantasy campaign.
Burp Foulbreath - February 25, 2005 06:59 PM (GMT)
I loved the films, GREATLY
but I dont want to play the game. I think that FB has been developed brilliantly over the last 15 years and well, Lord of the Rings is restricted to the character limits of the films and is only a fashionable 'phase', a couple of years from now it will be out of popularity but FB will keep evolving,
I agree with Cal, Games Workshop trying to milk it for all its worth before it dies.
Coastofmidnight - February 25, 2005 09:30 PM (GMT)
hated the movies. but ya sells are cool, but dont worry, the game will die out like in a year or two.

Sells? I don't comprehend. Care to try again?
Drauthnir - February 25, 2005 11:49 PM (GMT)
Assume "sales".
I dislike the LOTR game, but I'm sure it has a fair following. It can't be a lost cause if they're even bothering with a campaign. I hope those players enjoy it.
In the mean time, I'm moving this topic.
Prince Cal - February 25, 2005 11:53 PM (GMT)
Drauthnir, I think this would be better in off topic because it's mainly a rant about the corperate greed of gw and how fustrated fantasy and 40k players are going to be, not lord of the rings.
ImperialGrunt - February 26, 2005 12:28 AM (GMT)
No no no no no no no no no no no no no no! Damn it...LOTR Sucks...Its ...grr...*'splodes*

See, I thought of that, but 'sales are cool'?
I really have no idea what he could have been trying to say there...
And Cal: corporate greed? They've put money into something, sold it to a large number of customers, and now they're giving it the support their other systems have. Much as I'd like to see a fantasy campaign instead, I don't see how this is unreasonable business practice.
LordChilipepa - February 26, 2005 10:37 AM (GMT)
*Points at Vriishnak, agrees.*
I find myself doing that far too much, but generally, he says everything that needs to be said.
Prince Cal - February 26, 2005 10:43 AM (GMT)
I'm not saying it's unreasonable buisness practice, I actually think it's one of the best buisness ideas Gw have had in a while. But from a gamers point of view they're being greedy to get money out of something which is failing at the expense of other gamers. Which is perfectly reasonable just damn annoying.
I think "corperate greed" was the wrong way of phrasing it.

Actually, that's from the point of view of a fantasy or 40k gamer with no understanding of business. Looking at it from a LOTR player's perspective, it's probably more of an 'about damn time!'

Well I have to say unlike most of the posters here i am a Lord of the RIngs SBG fan, in fact that has taken up the majority of my gaming for the past year or so.
I have to admit that GW are now certainly goingto be trumping LoTR a bit more now then before due to nomore films, hence the summer campaign and eventually the new 40K style new edition release (plastic fellowship and cave trolls).
This being said i don't think it has major resources taken away from 40K or WHFB, thinking about it, in the LoTR heydays during the film years when LoTR was making the most money, 40K and WHFB got oddles of new stuff.
Today I think GW will try to flog it more but not at the expense of WHFB or 40K,i mean at the moment we have coming
WHFB
Wood Elves (autumn 05?)
Rise of Sotek (summer IIRC)
WH40K
Space Marines (continuing new termies next month and then after nids BT round xmas)
Nids (October)
LoTr
Scouging of the shire (this month)
New edition (2006?)
Lotr is not taking funds from the other games, but as a capitalist system goes, GW will have to make money from something and without the films this is the way it has decided to do it.
This summer looks great to me, plastic termies, lotr campaign and by the end hopefully woodies

The LOTR section was in dying need of activity, and this is largely related, so I put it here over the Off Topic section. If another mod really wants to move it, they may do so, but that was my reasoning.
Also, I agree that the campaign is a good move. They'll actually give some use to the LOTR models they've been selling. Those gamers are going to love it.
Johann von Maulheld - February 26, 2005 06:38 PM (GMT)
Aye, as one of those gamers, I'm looking forwards to it. Since I've been playing GW games, there has been a 40K and a WH campaign in the summer. LotR deserves a turn too! I'm looking forwards to using those excellent Haradrim models myself.
I am aware, however, that I am unlikely to persuade the WH and 40K players only, as similar issues have been grumbled over and left unsolved between players - the issue of pages in WD. I know plenty of WH and 40K players who feel that LotR took up too much space when there were maybe 20 pages max, including both sides. LotR players seem to think there aren't enough, or at least used, now with a reasonable amount of pages in WD dedicated to LotR.
As a player of both WH and LotR, I'm happy with things as they are now in WD, and I feel that LotR is due a campaign. Especially as it doesn't have to involve large armies, needing maybe 20 or so for a small game. I know that in the SoC there was an opportunity for Skirmish battles, but they nearly as much fun as 2000+pts.
