Title: The Rear Guard
Description: 1k HE vs Dwarfs

Oric - February 22, 2005 01:45 PM (GMT)
Unbeknown to the people of the Asur an expedition had been sent shortly after the end of the War of the Beard to reclaim the Pheonix Crown from the Dwarfs. After entering the World Edge mountains the expeditionary force met and clashed with the armies of the Dwarf King. For days the battle raged but in the end the Asur suffered a humiliiating defeat and the few survivors fled from the Karak gates towards home.

One cannot say that Dwarfs are stupid however, as the battle raged a small artillery train had been deployed behind the elves to cut off any retreat.

---------------------------------------

Oric looked out across the plain to the small Dwarf force and a look of concern flashed across his face. He glanced over at his second in command, Nymeria, wishing to know what his thoughts were. "Well old friend, what do you think?". Nymeria answered in a solemn voice, "The men are tired of battle, but their desire to return home outweighs their fatigure." Oric let these thoughts run through his mind and he began to devise a battle plan. He wheeled his horse about to look at his tattered group of survivors.

Oric waved his sword pointing here and there directing his troops, he deployed Nymeria and the helms on the left flank the spears in the middle and the small contingent of swordmasters in support of the spears. Oric trotted over to Nymeria and took his place in the helms and watched as the Dwarfs deployed their bolt throwers on the flank with the organ gun on the other flank opposite his swordmasters. The unit of warriors were holding back for some reason with the ironbreakers beside them as the thunderers deployed in one single line across their center.

Turn 1
Suddenly the movement of the dwarfs stopped and a cloud of smoke appeared in front of their guns followed by the sharp report of the handguns. Oric held his breath and watched as the hot lead poured into his spear unit. Dwarfs are known for their craftmanship not their aim but the winds must have been in there favor as almost half of the spears fell (8 wounds). The unit of elves panicked as their commrads fell around them and they ran back the way they had come. for a moment Oric thought his swords would flee to but they held fast and with a nod the marched towards the enemy and Nymeria gave the hlems the signal to advance.

Turn 2
Seeing the cavalry galloping toward them the dwarven bolt throwers targeted them and loosed their bolts. One of the bolts connected with the rider on his left and was skewered clean through. Another flume of smoke belched from the dwarf guns but their aim was poor and the fine elvish armour of the mounted nobles held true. The organ gun came to life in a flash of powder and a roar and 6 swormasters fell. Knowing that death awaited them either way the sword masters carried on toward ths gun as Oric gave the helms the order to charge. Before running down the dwarfs Oric looked back to see the spears rallying and knew they would be supporting shortly. The nobles drove their steeds toward the thunders and splashed across their ranks and slaughtered the dwarfs left and right. The thunderers fled from the fearsome charge and ran back to the safety of their holds. the silver helms carried on into the unit of warriors and the slaughter continued. Oric let a grin break across his face as the warriors raced the thunders back to their holds. He halted his hlems and watched the dwarfs flee.

Turn 3
Meanwhile on the flank the organ gun spew forth its destruction and killed the last of the warrior scholars. The bolt throwers attempted to shoot at the remaing spear unit but their aim was off, the runelord ran all alone towards the helms and challenged Oric to a duel for which he was only to glad to accompy his competitor. the Ironbreakers weild to charge or to watch. The runelord swung his mighty axe at Oric but he caught the weapon with his own and pushed it to the side and swung his own weapon in a deadly arc that caught his opponent in the side. The Dwarf though injured kept fighting as it in a Dwarfs nature to be stubborn. this time the axe found its mark and bit through Oric's Armour and into his shoulder. With endorphoines flowing through his bodyOric raised his great weapon high above his and brought in down atop the dwarfs head and split him from collarbone to midriff.

Seeing their leader slain and a large portion of their rear guard destroyed the weapons crew and the ironbreakers moved aside and let the remaining elves leave the area and return home.

My opponent gave up after i slew his runelord.

I felt i won the battle pretty easily but i must admit that at first i was intimidated by 20 thunderers line up like that. I knew i would have to get to him asap to take away that advantage and they broke when my silverhlems charged them. It could have been different if the runlord woulod have been in a unit and if he would have concentrated his fir on my helms instead of my infantry.
