Orkland Campaign -- Part 4
This week, we fought in a Carnage mission, where four 500-point combat patrols had to fight over an objective in the centre of the board. The objective was a gold-painted coffee bean on top of a building. Apparently, the bean was supposed to represent an elixir of life -- which, if you think about it, is what coffee is.
Here’s the list I used:
Squad Rukifellith- 10 Warriors w. blaster, Sybarite w. agonizer
Squad Jarazhi- 10 Warriors w. dark lance, Sybarite w. agonizer
Squad Dralekh- 10 Warriors w. dark lance
Squad Nethyr- 10 Warriors w. dark lance
Squad Larakhul- 10 Warriors w. dark lance
And here’s the armies I fought against:
Emperor’s Children:
6 Chaos Space Marines- assorted Noise Marine weapons, Champion w. plasma pistol, power fist & Daemonic Mutation
6 Chaos Space Marines- assorted Noise Marine weapons, Champion w. power weapon
6 Chaos Space Marines- (forget what it had)
Necrons:
Necron Lord -- Staff of Light
10-15 Necron Warriors
7 Immortals
(Note: The guys running the store made a special rule that, if an army list had no 2-wound characters available, a player could downgrade a 3-wound character to 2 wounds instead. Hence, the Necron Lord had 2 wounds instead of 3)
Biel-Tan Eldar:
7 Striking Scorpions- Exarch w. Scorpion’s Claw
6 Warp Spiders
6 Swooping Hawks- Exarch w. Web of Skulls & Sustained Assault
EXTRACT FROM THE JOURNAL OF RETHYK, HAEMONCULOUS OF THE KABAL OF THE DARKENED SOUL:
Our warriors continue to excavate the hill-mound we captured. So far, they are slowly unearthing a strange metallic structure of some sort. I am curious to see what this strange structure will turn out to be -- whatever it is, it is certainly not of Eldar origin.
But this strange structure, and the other ones in the other hill-mounds), are not the only secrets that this world has to offer: earlier today, one of our scouts returned from his foray, bleeding and out of breath. Before he expired, he told us of a ruined building a few miles east of us that held a strange artefact that could rejuvenate or even resurrect anyone it was used upon. Upon hearing this, I immediately realized that Lord Scyrex, ancient and withered as he is, would want this artefact in order to restore his youth and his health. I would probably rewarded and elevated if I were to make it a gift to him . . .
With this in mind, I immediately dispatched Jarazhi, Rukifellith, and five score of warriors to secure the elixir before anyone else could. Jarazhi brought back the following report:
Rethyk put me in charge of the retrieval force (a fact that obviously caused Rukifellith no end of irritation). After going most of the way on Raiders, we disembarked and advanced the rest of the way on foot. We would need the Raiders intact for later if we had to retreat.
As we reached the building (a ruined structure obviously of Ork or human design), we saw that there was a battle going underway at the sight: the Emperor’s Children (the same ones we had defeated before) were engaged in a ferocious firefight with a group of metallic figures. A chill ran down my spine when I realized that these figures were, in fact, Necrontyr. It seemed that the Yngir had interests in this world as well . . .
As I issued the order to advance and seize the objective while the two forces were fighting, one of our warriors suddenly spotted movement to our right. A second later, the air seemed to pulse, and a squad of Warp Spider Aspect Warriors suddenly appeared in front of the ruined building. Further down, a group of winged figures soared gracefully towards the Necrontyr, laser shots spitting out of their rifles. A hissed a violent curse when I realized that those damned Biel-Tan b***ards had arrived to contest the elixir as well.
Under my orders, our squads spread out. I knew from experience that there were probably Striking Scorpions hiding behind the hill, so we prepared for a counter-charge. Squad Larakhul clambered up onto a nearby hill and, from their position, confirmed that there were indeed Scorpions behind the main hill.
Meanwhile, the Warp Spiders disappeared for a minute, and then suddenly reappeared further away from the building. One of them was holding a large, golden object. I cursed when I realized that they had already gotten the artefact! Cursing, I dispatched Squad Rukifellith to attack the Warp Spiders. Meanwhile, further across the battlefield, most of the Swooping Hawks were cut down by gauss fire, and the remnants turned and fled like the cowards they were.
As our squads advanced towards the main hill to battle the Scorpions, there was a sudden cry like that of a desert eagle. Without warning, a winged figure suddenly descended on Squad Nethyr, lashing out with a flail-skull with terrifying speed and slaying warriors left and right. Where this Exarch had come from, I don’t know, but the warriors of Squad Nethyr quickly lost heart and fled. The Exarch, however, pursued them with a vengeance, cutting them all down as they fled. Before long, the ground was littered with broken bodies and stained with blood.
Meanwhile, the Striking Scorpions clambered onto the hill to prepare for a charge. The Warp Spiders, meanwhile, appeared near Squad Rukifellith and opened fire. A few of Rukifellith’s warriors were killed by constricting mono-filament, but they held firm. Raising his agonizer high, Rukifellith led his warriors in a charge against the hated foe.
Meanwhile, my warriors, along with Squad Dralekh, raised our splinter rifles and let loose a withering hail of fire on the closing Scorpions. Four of the seven aspect warriors fell to our poisoned shards, but they refused to flee. Squad Larakhul, meanwhile, fired on the hated Swooping Hawk Exarch. The Aspect Warrior gracefully avoided a dark lance shot, but even he could not avoid a hail of splinters, and he fell, quite dead.
With a vengeful cry, the Striking Scorpions launched themselves into Squad Dralekh. Nearly half of our warriors fell to their spitting sandblasters, buzzing chainswords and their Exarch’s crushing fist, but they held firm. Tasting vengeance, I led my own warriors in a counter-charge: a few of my own warriors fell to the lethal Scorpions, but in return, my agonizer tore one of the fools in half, while the rifle blades of both our squads stabbed down the rest. Finally, we have beaten the Swordwind host . . .
Meanwhile, Squad Rukifellith was engaged in a fierce fight with the Warp Spiders. Eventually, the last of the Spiders fell to Rukifellith’s agonizer, but it had cost him more than half of his squad. Grinning, Rukifellith picked up the fallen artefact, only to watch as it crumbled into dust. Those damned Craftworlders had tricked us! Which meant that the artefact was still in the building . . .
Seeing that we could still retrieve the objective, I ordered all squads to advance on the building. However, the Emperor’s Children had quickly dispatched the remaining Necrons -- their Lord fell to a blow from a mon-keigh’s power fist, and the rest were shot down with ruthless efficiency. Seeing their foes dead, they turned to us: as we advanced, we came under a terrible hail of fire from their noise-based weapons. Many of our warriors were ripped apart by raw sound, had their heads explode, or died of terrible convulsions. Many of our squads were pinned down as they tried to advance -- the terrible ringing in their ears rendered them immobile for short periods of time, allowing the Slaaneshi b***ards to pour in more fire. Eventually, only a bare handful of our warriors remained -- my entire squads was decimated, and I was the only survivor. Bitterly, I called in the order to retreat. The mon-keigh had won this round, and there was nothing we could do about it.
RESULT: LOSS
In the end, I just had too few warriors to contest the objective against the mostly-unscathed Emperor’s Children. On a plus side, though, at least I finally beat those Biel-Tan Eldar.
Cool , I'e just read it and now I'm gonna read the rest.
