Title: I won my first battle!
Description: May it not be my last...

I won my first battle with Tomb Kings!!! :fight:

Im so happy! :D

It was a very spontaneous battle yesterday, actually I had wanted to wait till I have a larger variety of troops to take. But after reading the army book I couldnt wait to try the Tombies out.
I was rather limited in creating an army list, because at the moment I only have normal skeleton infantry and archery, 3 chariots, a bit of light and a bit of heavy cav, a giant scorpion and 2 skull chukkas.

My army list was as following:

High Priest
Neferra's Plaques of Mighty Incantations, Cloak of Dunes, dispel scroll

Tomb Prince
Golden Eye of Rah-Nutt, Chariot of Fire, 2-H-W, L.A., S.

Priest
Staff of Ravening

Priest
Hieratic Jar
---

25 skeletons, command, L.A., S.
16 skeletons, bows
8 Light Cavalry
8 Heavy Cavalry, command, Banner of the Undying Legion

3 Chariots, standard, musician, Icon of the Sacred Eye
1 Tomb Scorpion

2 Skull Chukkas, enemy skulls

As the list suggests, I wanted mainly to try out the TK magic in this battle, so I decided to go magic heavy.

How do you like the list? Is it ok? Are there any obvious weaknesses?

If there are, then my friend wasnt able to use them to his advantage. He played a very solid o&g army, and advanced towards me right away. After the second round, I had lost all my chariots - the unit had been destroyed by his warmachines (a stone thrower and a bolt thrower), and the Tomb Prince had overestimated himself and his chariot when boldly charging into a unit of four trolls, never to be seen again.

It was then that the game turned. I was very lucky with my skull chukkas, often hitting twice per round per skull chukka (I love Horekha!). Eventually my friend foiled a panic test for his boar boyz who were about to break through to my archer, and they fled 15 inch away, leaving three trolls on their own with a unit of BigUns that had been seriously weakened by my shooting. My cav had gone around the flank and had caught off his two gobbo units, and although eventually it was destroyed (our cav sucks hard... :(), they did enough damage and held up the units enough that the goblins could no further help out at the front of the battle line.
With all the skulls hurling across the table and my friends units getting smaller and smaller, the run of the battle was turing to the best for me. The highlight though was still to come: My Tomb scorpion finally charged the remains of the BigUns, that were led by the orc general. The little scorpy directed all his attacks at the general and killed him with a killing blow. Needless to say that after that the battle was a piece of cake (especially the trolls were funny to watch, alwaysmarching three inch forward with their LD4... :D ).

It was a very fun battle to play. I especially love TK magic. And although I dont want to get carried away, I already feel the energy of the undead getting hold of me!!

Comments welcome!

My personal opinion:Replace the archers with warriors (HW,Sh,LA,banner, mucisian,NO champions) ,at least 24 of them in both units, give your prince the Scorpion Armour, use a swarm (for core unit purposes) ,replace your chariots and horsemen with scorpions and a tomb guard (at least 14,full command, banner of the undying legion) and use a casket if you want (a great help indeed). Finally, get more dispel scrolls. As for the rest,OK. :thumb:

Just a few ideas:

QUOTE
High Priest
Neferra's Plaques of Mighty Incantations, Cloak of Dunes, dispel scroll

Maybe drop the plaques for a jar? the hieratic jar works best on a HLP since its a 3d6 incantation. The plaques ok but its a bit expensive and you usually have 2 dice to make up for the first poor one for example.

Tomb Prince
Golden Eye of Rah-Nutt, Chariot of Fire, 2-H-W, L.A.,

I dont think TP's can get 2H-W. They only get great weapons.

The bowmen unit is fine, but I think your army is lacking something. Because once the chariots are taken out, your army is going to struggle a bit.

Maybe drop a priest and a few "nice" extras for some more troops? Ushabti and carrions will be nice...

Just some things to think about.... :thumb:

Yeah, that jar sounds quite cool. On the other hand, I also really like the plagues. Throughout the run of the battle it will likely occur that the high priest rolls real crap, like a six or a seven. In that case the plagues are great, especially because you can use them more than once. Ill try out the jar on my high priest too though soon.

With 2-H-W I mean Two-handed-weapon. My abbreviation for a second hand weapon is 2. HW. ;)

I noticed that after my chariots were gone I had nothing to deal with my opponent's boar boyz, trolls and BigUns adequately, except for my skull chukkasa, that luckily kept hitting. If they hadnt hit so well, I might have had a problem. Ushabtis seem like exactly the right thing I would have needed. I couldnt use any of them because I dont have the models yet, but I already bought some at ebay and am eagerly waiting for them to arrive!

Another question, what do you think about carrrions? Ive heard opposing opinions about them, ranging from "great, you have to use them" to "totally crap, a waste of points". What do you think?

*'ello, 'ello 'ello what do we have hear then*

I'm sorry to say this but your list is illegal. A chariot mounted character counts as a mounted one and so cannot have a additional hand weapon.

Funky the Elf - February 11, 2005 04:41 PM (GMT)
Where does it say that? I cant find that anywhere.

In the options for Tomb Princes it says that he may carry a spear instead if he is riding in a chariot. It doesnt say that he must carry a spear instead, it also doesnt say that he may only carry a great weapon when he's on foot. Or did I miss something?

I can't find that under characters, chariots or weapons in the BRB.

Are you sure you haven't made it up? ;)

I meant additional hand weapon. I'll just bhe editing that.

Goblit Skullhelm - February 11, 2005 06:32 PM (GMT)
He doesn't have an additional hand weapon, he has a two-handed weapon, meaning a great weapon...

when I see 2hw I think 2 hand weapoons. Sems to be another mistake in a number getting to large for comfort here.

Well funky, I congratulate you from the deepest of my heart, and I hope your carreer with TK doesn't end here ^_^ :thumb:

Try to use gw for great weapon

Funny list. Don't think it would go too well against a lot of lists. Like you said though, you cats kept hitting. IF he woulda had wolf riders, that woulda been stopped.

Dunno too much here, so my advice has to be limited :) Good job on the win, though once you get good, you're good :)

Ushabti are a great idea, and as much as I hate UD fast cav, they are stilll nice for panics when they hit a flank, and maybe to stop a unit from charing :) Good luck inthe future, and be sure to tell us how you've altered te list for better/worse.

Just on a side note remember that if you have the plaque then you can use it on the extra incantation from the jar. I think both are very important and usually the charater that has the plaque has the cloak as well in my army lists.

As for carrions i think they are excellent if you remember what they really are for. They cannot take on any units that have rank, they can help but thats it. If the army has any shooting for pain in the a$$ skirmishers than carrion are superb. I usually use them as war machine hunters since casualties wont make them panic and the incantations mean i neutralize the things that my oppenents are counting on killing my kings earlier on in the battle. Lone charaters are good as well and if you have to scarfice them and stall an enemy (or march interdiction) its not that painful.

Good Luck and Happy Hunting :fight:

ToMb BeAsT - February 12, 2005 04:14 AM (GMT)
I think carrion are great too, they are multiwound good toughness things which, with incantations, have a potential charge range of 40 inches!!! This means they can easily engage opponents lone mages or warmachines in the first turn when he thought he was safe.

Hey Funky the Elf,

I think I did something about Carrion here.

*edit: Icant get the http thing to link for some reason. You'll see it in the TACT guide. Its called circling with carrion or words to that effect.

Hope that helps. :D
