Title: I just bought the book
ThorinIcecracker - February 8, 2005 02:29 AM (GMT)
i've decided to start playing ogre kindoms because they're entirely different from my other army (high elves) and they fit really well with the armies that my friends play, while my high elves really didn't.
looking through the book the thing that jumps out the most was
gnoblar theifstone
maybe it's just the high elf in me but these look like alot of fun.
i was wondering if more than one of my characters can carry them
and if anyone had any experience with them.
i'm suprised by the ability to hold off magic that the ogres have.
i cant wait to lay into my friend's tzeench doombull with a greedy fist.

Ah, the infamous "are thiefstones like power stones and dispel scrolls, or are they unique like other magic items?" question. This has been widely debated all over the net, and there's still been no decision reached.
It'll be in the WD Q&A, but until then you'll just have to agree it with your opponent.

I'd have to disagree with you there. Although there are a few handy magic items about (two of which you've just mentioned), Ogres are actually pretty poor on the dispel dice front. You can't really take much of a scroll caddy (seeing as a Butcher costs 130pts and already counts as a lvl 2 wizard), and you can't take a Slaughtermaster until 3000pts. Even if you found the points for two butchers in 2000, your opponent (particularly Mr Tzeentch) would probably out-magic you. If you took three, you wouldn't have much of an army to back them up with.
:(

I'm just curious, but what makes Ogres "fit in" more? What are the armies that your friends play?

I'm just posting to give you guys a little push back on topic...followed by a shove...and then it all goes hazy from there.
ThorinIcecracker - February 10, 2005 08:29 PM (GMT)
my friends play
beastmen, chaos mortals, skaven and another one is going to start playing wood elves when they come out.
the skaven player's army is based in kislev
so we pretty much decided all our armies would have a sort of arctic twist to them.

How do HE not fit as an opponent there? I was thinking your firends played WE Brets, Emp and LIzzies or something. HE fit well against any of those 'evil' armies....
In anything under 2k, the magic D is pretty okay, and livable, how3ever, over 2k, you are prety hooped when it cmoes to magic. Your whole army moves fast, which is nice to get into combat soon, but with such a wide frontage, they are not exactly mage killers. Gnobblar trappers could take on a mage... if they are lucky. Sabretusksa are about your best bet, and HUnters are... expensive.
Easiest way to get rid of mages? Make them panic :D
I agree with the ogers beig a very cool list, but be very careful with them, and do not use them as you use your HE :)

I guess he meant the part of the world that they were from.
Chaos = the north
Beastmen = the north
Skaven = Kislev (up north)
WE = could be up north, I s'pose
Actually, having re-read his post, I think that's exactly what he meant.

And what abou theming HE that are perpetually in DE lands (up North?)
You can ALWAYS fit the fluff for location. It's sometimes harder to justify opponents....
ThorinIcecracker - February 10, 2005 10:43 PM (GMT)
well
dark elves are on the other side of the planet.
and i dont like the idea of a high elf raiding force.
Lucius - February 10, 2005 11:01 PM (GMT)
You would hate my army list then :) And pretty muchmy whole fluff....
But if you have a problem witht htem being on the other side of the planet, that's your perogative, not mine. Germany and US aren't that close... neither are US and Middle east.... If you are going to war, distance is no excuse... I erst my case :)
ThorinIcecracker - February 10, 2005 11:28 PM (GMT)
i don't really think the high elves are into pre-emptive attacks.
i wouldnt see anythign wrong with a raiding force of high elves attacking dark elves
but it seems like an army would be better serving the Asur at home than running around the northern empire.
