My friend collects Dark Elves and beats me nearly every time. Since I'm starting Ogres I want to try and build an army ideal for stomping the dark pansies, but what should I take in the army? This DE player likes his magehammer, and takes a cavalry army with lots of dark riders, cold ones and chariots backed up with crossbows and bolt throwers. he is also planning on expanding it with elite infantry. can you guys give me some ideas for army selection/tactics?
I'd definitely recommend Leadbelchers. With their multiple S4 + armour piercing shots they should be able to open up a few tin cans (knights  ).
If he often goes all-out magic, I'd say either don't bother with butchers or load up on them. One or two aren't going to make that much difference if he's got 3 level 2s and a level 4. If you don't take any you'd have a lot more points to spend on the lads - besides, you can't take a slaughtermaster until 3k anyway.
Ironguts would be a good choice because of their armour saves against the special infantry, but Bulls are much cheaper and with 3W at T4 the poncy elves'll still have a problem killing them off regardless of their lack of armour saves.
bulls with ironfists and light armor have a better save than any other non character ogre so if you want armor go for them.
I'd say get a Gorger as they can be useful against armoured foes due to their killing blow and they are unbreakable so can hold their ground until a ogre unit comes along :thumb:
Make way, Dark Elf player.
*looks at problem*
Boy, he's cheesy. That kind of list is hard to beat without going maxed out on light Gnoblers, they're going to slow down the Cold One Knights in, say, units of 35? Yeah, they'll hold. Then get a Maneater or something to Flank, then you'll win by Combat Res, meaning the knights'll flee. Good, huh? ;)
I'd also suggest Larger units of Ogres. Maybe even to go as far as hire some Pikemen from the Dogs of War Army list (With opponents consent of course), have a unit of 20 with Full Command in a 5*4 block, let's see, that's 21 Attacks hitting 4+ then Wounding 3+ (Pikes get +1 Strength when getting Cavalry Charged) and then a 3+ Armour Save, OK so you're not going to kill more than 3-4 on average, but that's still good. Also, you Strike first!
for Characters you want them to move fast to get those Sorceresses, give them Longstrider Names, makes them move faster, really handy in a tight spot, in my opinion anyway.
Some Leadbelchers aren't really worth it, they'll flub it, no, seriously, they will get lots of hits (about 14), then 1 kills. No Leadbelchers.
Also, fill up on Gnoblers! You need to outnumber the Dark Elves, and then overpower them, otherwise those Knight's will go through your lines.
