Title: Hell Blaster Volly Gun

Cossack Lord of the Empire - November 24, 2004 09:27 PM (GMT)
How Relyible is the Hell Blaster Volly Gun and how good is it ? Is it worth still using? Please help me. I was given 2 of them and I don't know whether to use them both.

well one of them is very cool, if a bit unreliable. You can take out whole regiments with the thing. I personally take one whenever I can. I wouldn't take two though, perhaps you could convert the Old Reliable variation on a steam tank if you don't want 2.

my friend ALWAYS takes 1 in his empire army (even in border patrol!), and i find this:
you have a 1/6 chance of a misfire on each dice, this translates into and 3/18 chance OF A MISFIRE (not even an explosion yet!) per shooting phase. I dont know about you but i like those odds.
so lets say you roll: 8,6, MISFIRE - now you have only a 1/6 chance of blowing up. I dont know about you but i like THOSE odds (put together).

Ok, lets say you beat the hell out of probability and you blow up. How does my friend counter-act this? He takes a wizard next game and takes second sign of amul (the one that allows re-rolls) because you can always get it (grrr). Well, hes done that ever since, and ive only seen his helblaster blow up once out of about 6 games (and that was when he didnt take a wizard)

And dont even get me started about master engineer. [mutters about a pain in the ass and shuffles off] :thumb:

Your math is way off. 3/18 is the exact same as 1/6, which doesn't factor in the multiple shots. You actually have about a 42% chance of mifiring per phase, of which 5/6 are bad. Therefore, you have a 35% chance of a negative misfire per shooting phase.

Is your friend using Second Sign to re-roll the artillery dice or his roll on the Misfire table? You're not allowed to do the former, Second Sign can only re-roll d6 i.e. six-sided dice labelled 1 to 6. That's the impression I got from your post, anyway.

Cheers,
DLJ

first of all, sorry about the maths. I just meant that u had a 1 out of 6 chance of misfiring
and my friend doesnt use the second sign on the artillary, he uses it on the misfire chart.

letīs face it, itīs gona blow up but when it does work itīs awesome. can scare the enemy away without firing a shot. go for it Iīll say. better safe than sorry doesnīt apply here

Icepick, I get the impression what your friend is using his engineer to fix his volley gun, this is not legal. Anyway I agree on the topic, a helblaster is worth taking, perhaps take 2 in a 3000 points battle.

I'd say use them both, haha. Their like assault rifles from the future and brought back in time to be used.

I'm not a empire player but doesn't the helblaster have a 1/3 chance of blowing up when misfireing?

The Helblaster has a 1/6 chance of misfiring on each artillery dice it rolls. Since the dice rolls are independent events, it has a 1/6+1/6+1/6=3/6=50% chance of misfiring when it fires, of which as Vriishnak said, 5/6 are bad, giving us 1/2x5/6=5/12 chance of getting a negative misfire.

Engineers arnt allowed to re-roll artillary dice on hellblasters?
Damn that monkey! ... I mean my friend...

Anyway, yeah, sorry about the maths again.
As i think someone said. It's devestating when it works (or gets a six on the misfire) but silly when it doesn't.

In answer to the question, take one, but don't have it as a massive fall back plan if all goes wrong, and remember to take some more back up artillary!
