Title: Making an Ulrican army....
Description: SoC list or cult of Ulric?

I have that problem. We all know what it is, so instead of clamping down on it I'm going to explore it.

Yes I want another army - Ulricans. I love the white wolf feel, and teutogen guard. They're also like fantasy space wolves (which are my all time fav army of any game)

But I have come to a snag in my plans. I've worked out generally what I want for my army, but I dont know how to make it! Should I use the Cult of Ulric list that was in a white dwarf? Or should I use the SoC army of Middenland list. I dont actually have the white dwarf that has the cult in it, but from what I've gathered here are the differences.
  • Cult cant use detatchments, SoC list can
  • Cult can take high priest, Soc list cant
  • Cult has teutogen guard, hunting hounds and warriors of ulric as core, Soc list has them as special.
  • Cult cant take cannons/mortar/handgunners/crossbows, Soc can.
  • Cult can have warrior priests as champions of warriors of ulric, Soc list cant

Theres probably more, but I need help.

Heres generally what I want in my army, so if you could help me and advise me on the best list to use for it.

- Grand master of the white wolves with 9 inner circle white wolf knights
- Mounted Priest of ulric with 5 white wolf knights
- Mounted Priest of ulric with 5 white wolf knights
- 20 or so Teutogen guard
- some small units of halberdiers/crossbowmen etc..
- warriors of ulric
- 2 units of 5 hunting hounds
- Cannons/wolf kin
- some archers/huntsmen

So... what would people recommend. I was thinking Soc list, as I get detatchments cannons and crossbowmen, but I was thinking it would be cool to have warrior priests as champions and to have all those cool units as core instead of special.

Arg, cant decide. Help!!

Hmm.. as you said I would probably take the SOC list. THe detachments are one of the main factors that make empire infantry that good. If ignored, the countercharge ability removes rankbonus, turning your once placid unit of swordsmen into awesomely efficent fighting machines.

I think the main question is: what is there to loose from NOT using the cult list?

THe priest as champions isnt really that good considering they are quite expensive, and priests arent actually that good in combat (2 attacks and lack of armour).

The magic of the cult list is good, but not something you would want to sacrifice detachments for. The spells are just prayers and they are only useful at best.

Stuff that takes out enemy light cavalry\fliers like pistoliers and a smattering of missile troops is also a advantage.

Also the boris character is pretty good for his points. Does he count as a special character? I thought he was "intergrated" into the list- like the emperors champion into the black templars space marine chapter.

Any hope this helps.. SOC list all the way :D

Thanks a lot plasmapuff, I think I'll be going with the SoC list. I cant deal with losing cannons, mortars, crossbows, handgunners, wizards and captains (pegasus) just to swap round the army selection a bit.

The Boris character can be taken in the SoC list, but doesnt have to be. He's pretty cool - but I prefer a nice grandmaster with helm of teutogens (str 7 all the way ^_^ )

ok, firstly, I play a cult of ulric list with kislev detachments so i may be biased. but i certainly have a lot of experience playing the list, so i'll try to help u.

firstly, the cult of ulric list have some major weaknessess.

the cult cannot take any wizards, AKA no dispel scrolls. and although u can take sh*tloads of dispel dices sometimes it just ain't enough.
secondly, the whole army revovlves mainly around infantry, mainly ur run of the mill warriors of ulric and ur teutogen guard, of course if u wan to play all white wolf knights, its up to you. i must say that the warriors of ulric are a very cheap troop choice for wat they do. at 3 pts only each, there are a lot of tatical possibilities open. for example, i usually use 2 or 3 small detachments armed with great weapons or additional hand weapons to rediect enemy charges/ to flank/ or just as sacrifice. of course this will require a certain amount of tatical finesse on your side to pull off.
the rare choice that u get, the wolf-kin is rock hard infantry, i must say. being stubborn at 8, skirmishing and can be equipped as u see fit and with command options to boot. the fact that they are skirmishing and stubborn means that they are very good at protecting flanks and acting as tar pits also.
the other stubborn unit u have is of course the teutogen guard.they are like the greatswords, very useful for holding up that enemy unit till ur flankers hit them, presumbly ur 5 or 6 man strong of white wolf knights. also give them the banner of middenheim( a cult item) for 40 points onli and they're immune to fear and terror! this means that they are practically unbreakable! just be sure to have a bsb close by.
if u get a chance, take a look at the magic items for the cult list, you would find that in order to make up for their weaknessess, the magic items there are mostly very good, useful and underpriced. my favourite is the bane of the craven, which does not allow ur enemy to flee as a charge reaction! i give it to my seneschal leading the white wolf knights and they work like a charm against those cowards who flee all the time.

all in all, cult of ulric is a challenging list to use, it really tests your tatical acumen and demands more input from u then the typical sit back and shoot empire list. but succeed and i assure u that the satisfaction u glean shall be worth ur while.
