Title: [X]g5 panther
Description: do you really need panther?
Jonathan Tweet - October 20, 2003 04:14 PM (GMT)
Greetings!
Here is my situation: I am supposed to get my G5 in the mail today. I heard that you need Panther to take advantage of the 64 bit architecture. I also heard that you can get some special deal on Panther if you bought a G5. What's the scoop? Are either of these true?

Welcome to The Mac Forum. I'm Sysop, the head administrator.
In regards to your problem(s):
- Have fun with your G5, it's a great computer. With or without Panther.
- I don't think you need Panther to take advantage of the 64 Bit Architecture, because no one has Panther....yet.
- You may get a discount on Panther since you bought a G5, I don't have one so I'm not sure.
- Depending on when you ordered your G5, Panther may be pre-installed. I don't know, you'll have to tell me.
I hope that answers some or all of your questions.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
I have had a G5 since Sept 1 and have enjoyed it a bunch. It comes with OS X v. 10.2.7; a special build for the G5. There is also a G5 upgrade to 10.2.8 available from apple. It works great with this OS- very fast. Panther will be available for the G5 for 19.99- I just received a promo email to that effect.
I do not think that it is absolutely necessary that you run Panther to get the benefits of the 64 bit architecture because Apple has made a special build of OS X especially for the G5 with it's IBM processor. But- why not get it since it's only 20 bucks.
Check out the promo page I am talking about:

Jonathan,
I know you are anxious for your G5, I can recall checking my order status for several packages. It will be at your house soon, and remember: Good things come to those who wait.

I'd order Panther for your G5 asap. First, you get the great price. Second, you may as well go ahead and upgrade (from scratch) before you start installing all kinds of software and then have to reinstall.
My personal recommendation... on a new G5, I would NOT upgrade the OS... I'd do a clean install when going to Panther....
DO IT NOW!... while it's easier.

Rufus is correct, I'd install or clean install Panther before you do anything.
