i already had imovie 3.03 and iphoto 2.0 yet software update in the system preferences still prompted me regarding available updates for my software. while downloading the 80 megabyte update from the server i realized that the versions they were the current versions i already have. anyway is there something wrong with software update?

Most likely. I also checked the versions out, and sure enough you do have the latest ones.

Perhaps there is something wrong with the software update server, or your software update application. I would go and find the preferences for that software and trash them. They should be in the Library - Application Support perhaps. Sorry, can't give you an exact location.
