Title: [A]flat panel 17" studio display
Description: poping, cracking, static discharge sound
mac909 - September 18, 2003 09:21 AM (GMT)
hi,
i bought a 17" lcd studio display about 2 month ago; and it starts to make weird poping sounds. i went to the apple store and asked the mac genius about the problem. i was told that they never encountered this problem before, therefore the only thing i could do is to take the display to the store and have them test it. i don't really have time right now, so i thought maybe i can find my answer here.
the display works fine right now, but 1st the poping sound is annoying, 2nd i am affraid that, in the long run, it will eventually die on me. i need to know if this is a normal plastic expanding sound due to the heat or it's static discharge sound due to a bad grounding. anybody have any idea or encountered the same problem??
the poping sound does not happen every second. it pops once in a while, sometimes in a short interval, sometimes long. somehow i think it happens when there's a change in the image on the display, but i am not sure about that.
please help!

I certainly have never encountered this problem before.
The possable causes you meantioned sound resonable, but I am not sure at this stage. I have two 17" FP displays and neither have ever done this.
I will ask around a little. (I work at a mac store). I will also post on a german forum i sometimes go to.
I'll keep you posted.

Hi, and welcome to the forum. My 17" studio display is about a month old and I have never heard it make any sounds at all- and it dosen't get hot either. What's happening to your display sounds pretty scary-- I believe I'd have that thing down to the Apple store pretty quick. Good luck.

Sounds to me like a short somewhere along the line, and while I've never heard of an LCD clicking, I have heard CRTs clicking when they're about to die.

thanks guys...
the only reason i don't want to take it down to apple store is because the problem can't easily be reproduced it takes time.. sometimes very long time. at this moment time is the only thing i don't have.. oh well... hope more people get to read this thread and someone might experience the same thing..

I agree with Duo on the short theroy. I've had clicking Hard Drives, & Clicking CRTS, but never a clicking LCD.

| It's probably just the plastic expanding and contracting due to the heat the monitor gives off. Mine's done it since I got it...over a year and a half ago. |

i really hope that the problem is just plastic expanding due to heat. after so many days, i don't see people comment about having the same problem. if the problem is rare then i guess it's more like a defect.
thanks

As having never even heard of this problem before you posted it the best advise I can give is to take it in, all of the guys I've talked to on the subject can think of what could cause it since LCD displays barely produce any heat, worst case senario is that you leave it as is and it dies, your best chance is if you can part with it for a few days is to take it to the Apple store near closing time the guys will test it the whole next day then if they can't reproduce it they may send it to texas and they will test it, for a day then if they can reproduce the problem at any time they will fix it and send it back, I can attest to the service since my Apple Care has more than paid for itself(4X over I think!) for thins I could have fixed myself but let them handle it(since I didn't want to void my warranty) and stuff that I couldn't fix if I wanted to, since certain parts can only be gotten from Apple directly.
