to quote David Pogue, Mac OS X, Pogue Press O'Reilly: Trouble shooting>Rebuilding your databases:
| QUOTE |
" ... Over time, you add and delete hundreds of messages from these database files; over time, some digital sawdust gets left behind, resulting in peculiarities when addressing messages, or general mail sluggishness. You also wind up with massive message files hidden on your hard drive, which can consume hundreds of megabytes of disk space. That's a particular bummer if you like to copy your message databases to you laptop when you go on a trip.
Fortunately, it's easy enough to rebuild the message databases. Doing so cleanses, repairs and purges your message files. As a result, you wind up with a much more compact and healthy database.
To rebuild an email database, highlight it in the mailboxes "drawer" in Mail. (Highlight several if you like.) Then choose Mailbox>Rebuild Mailbox. Mac OS X takes several minutes (or several hours depending on the size of your mailboxes) to rebuild or compact your database. End of quote. |

Any risk in loosing messages that you want to keep? I've got several, near a hundred.

Gee, I don't really know. I tried it after I read the article and everything seemed to remain the same. I didn't notice any difference at all really. There is nothing in the book about what can go wrong, only what will go right. I guess you could back up your files somehow and then rebuild. Are you having any trouble with Mail?
It sounds to me that "rebuild" is kind of like "refresh" in some programs. It just removes the artifacts and digital debris. I'd say it's worth a try. :D

I just tried, and I didn't lose anything.
Alarson,
Fixed your quote.

Whoops, you're talking about Mac OS X Mail, right?
alarson2 - August 25, 2003 01:05 AM (GMT)
Hey Sysop,
Thanks for fixing the quote. Yes--OS X. The book I quoted from came out before Jaguar, so I guess there would have to be some differences between it and the new versions of the software but a lot is still relavant. The book is David Pogue's, OS X, The Missing Manual. I have several Mac books so if you ever need me to look something for you, just ask.

Thank you, Alarson. Now, back to the original problem, Duo, did you do it? Did you lose anything?
