Title: Trouble With Homepage
Description: HomePage cannot see new movies
alarson2 - July 5, 2003 01:36 AM (GMT)
Hello to all. This is a problem which I recently posted to the Apple site. I'm not getting much help there. And the"award winning" paid member support is very slow. There are weeks in between contacts with moderators. I have been having this problem since February or March. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
I have added several new movies to my iDisc - carefully following all the correct criteria- All movies have short names and all files end in .mov and all were created on this iMac in iMovie and converted to Quicktime, small for web. But when I go to my homepage to publish them so my family can view them, they do not appear there in the list for me to choose. I have posted this problem on the paid member discussion forum and did receive general advise from a moderator, Chris, but the advise was of no value because I was already doing all the right things as far as creation of the movies is concerned. The first movies I posted back in October last year worked perfectly, but everything I send to iDisc now Including jpg still pictures cannot be published. I was able to publish jpgs from iPhoto after I made an album for them --but I want to publish my little movies too.
Some people told me that I had to empty the cache in my browser before I went to HomePage so I tried that but to no avail. I am currently using Internet Explorer and occasionally Safari but neither makes a difference.
I am using OSX 10.2.6, iMovie 2&3 and Quicktime 6.3.

I will ask Duo Maxwell to help you because he has experiance with Homepage.
Which forums are you posting on that you pay for?
If you are talking about the Real Apple Forums, the Helpers are not paid at all.
PS: Welcome to the forums!

Hello, alarson2 and welcome to The Mac Forum!
I'm sorry I can't help you, I don't know a thing about .Mac. But, I will alert the board staff.
The Sysop

I followed standard procedure about 8 times today and didnt run into any problems, did you put a space in the titles? What exactly are you doing? You know they say "A picture says a thousand words" or in this case a screen shot or 2 might help. My [mail] E-mail is duo_maxwell1@mac.com if you can't get them uploaded. [iBook]
alarson2 - July 6, 2003 01:08 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the replies!
The paid member forum I'm talking about is the .Mac one. If you are a member of .Mac you can post problems to a different site other than the regular Apple Support discussion site. It's supposed to be monitored by more moderators or something. They call it "Tech Support." Personally I don't call it Tech Support. I call it something else that I shouldn't mention; A Crock of....well you know. So all that aside, I will get some screen shots together and present my problem graphically. Thank you
alarson2 - July 7, 2003 03:50 AM (GMT)
Hi Duo.
Here are some screen shots. iDisk shows the contents of my movie folder. There are 17 items in there. Home page 1&2 show the list in homepage. Most of the things you see in the movies folder do not appear in the list on homepage.
Well, excuse me. I do not know how to send a screenshot. I do not see anything about attachments.
So how do I send one. whats the trick. Drag and drop dosen't work.
Duo Maxwell - July 7, 2003 05:54 AM (GMT)
Ok, to upload a pic to the iDisk to use as an avatar or to upload to something like these forums you need to open your iDisk, open the .Pictures folder and you can either put the pic there or place a short named folder in there to put the file in, I'll use the later as an example) create a folder with a short name without spaces(you can use spaces but you have to type in 20% in place of every space since that's what the HTML does to them) then place in the .gif, .jpg, .tiff or just any picture file your using in the folder. then you test, your link should look like this
http://homepage.mac.com/your user name/.Pictures/folder name/picture name.jpg, .gif, .tiff
it should look like this
http://homepage.mac.com/duo_maxwell1/.Pict...ke/ice_cars.jpgthe p in .Pictures has to be upper case or it wont work.
Using that link you can copy and paste it using the IMG button on these forums(posting a picture on the Apple Discussions will get you in trouble. We won't get you in trouble here, as long as the picture is clean. The Sysop will ban you if you post a bad picture.......)
Now if that doesn't work you'll have to send it via [mail] E-Mail, then I can post it for you.
To send it via [mail] E-Mail you'll need to compose a new letter then goto Edit>Attach File then locate and select the file(s) and send them to me, again my address is duo_maxwell1@mac.com
I hope this explains it for you.
Duo
Edited by Sysop for confirmation of board rules about the pictures. YES, posting bad pictures is a great way to get banned. The Sysop.

I have given Alarson2 permission to upload images. Alarson2:
1. Take the screenshot.
2. Start a post on this forum. At the bottom, go to "Chose file". Then chose the file and click OK. Then, hit the Post message button.
I hope this doesn't confuse you more.
The Sysop.
Sysop - July 8, 2003 09:27 PM (GMT)
Alarson2 did it! Here are the images:

Notes:
1. The Images will only be available for 21 days.
2. They take a minute to load. If they don't load on the first try, hit refresh.
3. If, for some reason, you have trouble viewing the images, just download them from Alarson's iDisk
here.
So, Duo, Can you help him?
The Sysop
Sysop - July 10, 2003 08:24 PM (GMT)
Sorry. Duo is currently having trouble with his iBook. I will contact him privately and see if he has an answer.
The Sysop.
Duo Maxwell - July 11, 2003 08:39 PM (GMT)
Now to re-cap, how exactly are you posting them up?
You should be able to veiw the videos the same way as the photos as stated in the instructions, I noticed that some of the file/folder names have spaces in them, they can't its an internet protocol thing from way back in the early 90's. You should be using under score _.
I'll see if I can upload one of the movies in the pictures.
Sysop - July 11, 2003 09:29 PM (GMT)
Duo,
Just to let you know, you cannot upload movies here.
The Sysop
alarson2 - July 12, 2003 03:03 AM (GMT)
Duo,
Look carefully, there are no spaces in the names of my movies. At least when I made the names there were no spaces.
I was contacted by an Apple moderator! He told me that the names did have to be shorter with all lower case letters and no special characters. So I renamed them all just like he (Mike) said. But they still don't show up in the darn list.
I am using Safari exclusively now. So you'd think that the software would work together.
Duo Maxwell - July 12, 2003 06:17 AM (GMT)
I've run a few more tests, I think I'll ask an expert on the subject to come in, I'll let you know.
alarson2 - July 12, 2003 12:21 PM (GMT)
Thanks for thinking about this. It's very annoying. I am doing all the stuff right I'm sure. I mean in iMovie and QT. There is something wrong with the connection between the Homepage program and my iDisk. It's as if the iDisk isn't recognized. I noticed in the FileSharing part of HomePage there is a little button at the bottom that allows for refreshing the page- like if you add a new file you can just click to refresh and the new file shows up.
Thanks again
Alan
alarson2 - July 13, 2003 11:45 PM (GMT)
Update. I have gone back to my iDisk and renamed all the movies according to the criteria that Mike (the Apple Moderator) suggested. Now --guess what: None of the movies work--not even the ones that I posted before I started having trouble. I have zilch for movies. I was contacted by the moderator who asked me to make of list and in the doing of that follow an exact formula. The list should show all the movies working and all the ones not working. Now that's all of them. Here is a copy of the list:
/Movies/dangirl.mov
/Movies/kate1.mov
/Movies/kitfeed.mov
/Movies/czrlmp.mov
/Movies/marnod.mov
/Movies/meanmar.mov
/Movies/minbirdcam.mov
/Movies/rain.mov
/Movies/rats.mov
/Movies/redbelly.mov
/Movies/rocky.mov
/Movies/sophie.mov
/Movies/wickbowl.mov
/Movies/wicksmile.mov
/Movies/kittens.mov
/Movies/grosbeak.mov
/Movies/robin.mov
/Movies/titmouse.mov
/Movies/wrenbath.mov
So look at these names. They are all very short and do not have any special characters or anything. Why don't they show up in the list in Homepage? When I click on home page to publish stuff--none of this shows up. Arrrughhh. If I open my iDisk and click on one of the movies, it plays just a nice as you please.

Duo, can you help him....?
Duo Maxwell - July 16, 2003 02:17 PM (GMT)
Ok, this is the reply I got from Sky Kogachi on the Apple boards:
| QUOTE |
| I have worked with Alan on this problem on the public Apple boards, but he didn't respond to my last posting about his use of proxy servers - so I assumed he resolved his issue. I have once again posted that question in that thread and will pick it up if he responds. |
Here was alarson2's reply:
http://discussions.info.apple.com/WebX?13@...10@.4aaa7d7a/15I may have to bring in Douglas, but he is a rather busy guy, it could be a week till he replys.
P.S. I would have posted sooner if the board would have not gotten errors. [iBook]
Sysop - July 16, 2003 11:38 PM (GMT)
Hmm. If you don't get your problem solved, I have Doug's email.

I want to thank everybody very much for your work on my "Problem with HomePage" I'm sure that eventually it will be fixed. I have changed my movie tiltes and done everything else the moderator has told me to do. If you would like to see the updated versions of the screenshots of my home page list and my iDisk Movies folder please feel free to visit my homepage public folder at:
http://homepage.mac.com/alarson2/FileSharing36.htmlWhile you are there, you are welcome to look at any of the other stuff too.
alarson2 - July 17, 2003 02:57 AM (GMT)
Wow--Sorry, that got posted twice.. Well you live you learn.
Sysop - July 17, 2003 08:39 PM (GMT)
That's OK. I guess a moderator deleted it. (?? Shadowlord, any explaination?)
alarson2 - July 17, 2003 08:44 PM (GMT)
I deleted it myself--I went back to the second post, the duplicate, and edited out all the copy and then substituted the blerb that you see there now.
Sysop - July 20, 2003 01:43 PM (GMT)
OK. I may download that movie off your site to make sure it works....... is that OK with you?
alarson2 - July 20, 2003 09:01 PM (GMT)
Sysop - July 20, 2003 09:36 PM (GMT)
Thanks.
The Sysop.
Update:
Hehehe. Nice dog!
alarson2 - July 26, 2003 12:10 PM (GMT)
Well finally something happened! I was contacted (email) by tech support from Apple and they want to call me on the phone next week!!! OK--The engineers could not replicate and solve my problem (my movies do not show up in the list on homepage) so they are going to talk to me personally. I'll have to wear someting nice. I know, my black Apple T-shirt and blue jeans...I'll look just like Steve Jobs.
I can't wait.!!
Sysop - July 26, 2003 12:30 PM (GMT)
Here's my
t-shirt. Good Luck.
alarson2 - July 26, 2003 11:17 PM (GMT)
Wow--I like that shirt. I think I'll get one too!!
Sysop - July 27, 2003 11:06 AM (GMT)
I love mine. They're great people, my shirt came in no time at all. Only downside is that they're expensive.
alarson2 - July 31, 2003 02:52 AM (GMT)
Well, guess what. problem fixed. Boy!! it was just me being stupid the whole time. I knew it would have to be something simple. I swear it was different the first time I posted movies to the homepage. For six months I have been fumbling around there on homepage and could not publish a freaking movie....phewwww.!
The Apple moderator called me at home tonight and talked me right through the procedure and it was Easy. Simple!! Oh I hate being a newbie.
Duo Maxwell - July 31, 2003 03:09 AM (GMT)
Don't we all? But we have to start somewhere. Glad to here that its fixed.
Sysop - July 31, 2003 08:19 PM (GMT)
Just out of sheer curiousity, do you remember the Moderator's name? Gayle? John? Mike? Joe? Sysop? (Just kidding about Sysop.)
alarson2 - July 31, 2003 08:49 PM (GMT)
There was one named Mike who emailed me early on. and the guy who actually called was William. First we did iChat-- He (William) emailed me and told me to iChat him to get his attention and after I did that, he called. It only took two minutes. I hope he got paid some big bucks for that. The moderator named Sysop was out to lunch.
Sysop - July 31, 2003 09:33 PM (GMT)
That's great. Just so you know, Sysop is not a moderator.
