[dohtml]Lucille was late. Oh yes, so very late. On her first day at the organizaTION too. The BOSS would not be very pleased with her, but she hoped he would understand. Government buildings tend to be very large, and very confusing. Lucille figured that would be good in case there was ever an intruder alert, but right now? She just wanted to get to work.

So Lucille, age 24 and still getting lost on her first day in a new building, makes her way through the LAByrinth, passing by all the scientists. She knew she was in the wrong section, and quite probably the wrong floor altogether. The military level was on basement level 5, and the LAByrinth was level 3. So, little miss Lucille bobbed her way through the white coats, brown hair flowing behind her, attempting to find the blasted elevators in this place.

Bip,

pow,

BAM!

She was splayed on the floor, some green chemical barely avoiding her pristine blue uniform. Someone laughed out, and said, “Oi oi oi! Is Lucy running through here again?” Lucille grunted, and stood herself up. Lending the poor scientist a hand, she helped the young lad up. He looked quite shaken, as he should. Hydrochloric acid was rapidly eating through his once pristine white smock. The poor boy ran, screaming while he did so. Lucille was shocked, and for that moment, had forgotten her mission.

She soon remembered what it was. “Would one Lucille Platterspine please make her way towards the BOSS’s room? I repeat, Ms. Platterspine, your job is on the line here.” The intercom was as if a chiming alarm clock in the dead of night, and with hardly a word, she escaped that ward.

“Ms. Platterspine, I understand it is your first day within our fine organizaTION.”

“Yes sir.”

“Do you know how you came to be here?”

“I was picked from a battalion of police to serve my government.” Lucille’s eyes started to wander away from the BOSS.

“Tamen Tantum Obses Muneris. Do you know what this phrase is, Ms. Platterspine?”

“The motto of the organizaTION. We serve the government to protect the people.” Lucille noticed how very brown this office was. Very plain. Medals and various awards were donned on the wall, and out of the corner of her vision Lucille could make out a foot wiggling in the air.

“Very good, so you can read. Do you care to explain to me then, how you can protect the fine people of Earth, if you cannot even make a simple deadline?”

Lucille eyes were following the foot, it had a sort of rhythmic stupor over it. “I am sorry sir, it will not happen again.” Now Lucille’s head was bobbing along with the foot in its eternally silent beat.

“Damn right it will never happen again. Lucille, I would like to introduce you to Lucy Tripudio. She is the finest officer we have here. She has a perfect arrest record, and is the longest working person we have ever had. She was here before even me.” Lucille nodded. She was hardly paying attention now, just that foot. She couldn’t stop looking at it. “Lucille. Lucille? Lucille!”

“A-bwuh?” finally her trance was broken. She looked up into the seething rage of the BOSS’s green eyes. “Yes sir. I have heard of Officer Tripudio before.”

“Very good. You are to be her assistant then, until we can trust you to do solo missions. Lucy, do you comprendes?” The heat of those eyes bore into Lucille’s skull. Surely her hair would light aflame within a moment. But her eyes slipped. She chanced a glance. She beheld Lucy Tripudio, a legend among the organizaTION.

The legend herself was staring past the BOSS and into the wall. One hand twirling a strand of white-blonde hair, the other tapping against the armrest of her chair. Her hand moved to the same phantom beat as her foot, and both had the same hypnotic effect.

“Lucy, I’m not in the mood for your shit right now. Are you paying attention or not? Need I remind you that this is for your mission tonight?” He knew how to choose his words. The beat stopped, her eyes focused, and she sat motionless. “Sir yes sir! Yo comprendo!”

Lucille couldn’t believe what she was seeing. She had heard the stories of Lucy. She read about the success reports Lucy had claimed, but, she also read some of the damage reports Lucy had caused at the base. Tripping over power lines, destroying lengthy experiments; releasing dangerous animals all because she wanted a dance partner. Lucy was an idol to Lucille, and like any idol, Lucille aspired to be just like her.

The searing heat of the BOSS’s eyes finally left Lucille’s forehead. They focused instead on the attentive Lucy. “Lucy, in addition to your primary objective tonight, you are to train the new Acolyte so that she may be capable of performing well enough on her own.” He sighed, rubbing his rugged cheek. “And for the love of everything, Lucy, bring this one back alive. That is all; you are both dismissed until this afternoon.”

Lucille got up from her chair, saluted with her left hand, and fled that brown room. She was waiting outside the room, waiting for her breathing to regulate once more.

Click.

She stood at the waiting, and watching as Lucy walked, no, she glided out of the room. So light on her feet, so in tune with the rhythm of the world. The greatest officer in the history of the organizaTION exited the room with such grace, right as she tripped over Lucille’s extended foot.

With a soft little cry, Lucy became friends with the ground. Lucille was horrified, such an expression of shock and dismay displayed on her face. Oh this would be it, she would be going to... hell, was what they used to call it, wasn’t it?

“Excuse me! First day with my new feet!”

“...Wait... what? Pardon me?” Lucille was still shocked. The greatest officer here, and she had just tripped her.

“It’s no problem, don’t worry about it!” Lucy pushed herself off the ground, seemly floating back up on to her feet. “It happens to me all the time.” She stuck her left hand out. “The name’s Lucy Tripudio, I’m an officer here. What’s your name?” She had the goofiest grin on her face that Lucille had ever seen.[/dohtml]
