Title: I don't belong there...

AngelHalo - March 12, 2008 04:39 AM (GMT)
This isn't much of a life issue, but I think it does impact on my life due to a decision I'm considering making.

Now after over two years of looking for a job aimlessly, after failing to get a job at Gamestop, I finally got a job at the REGAL Entertainment Group (aka the Movie Theater). I was okay with it, but as I spent a day there, it didn't grow onto me. I know, it's usually slow on first days, but the environment doesn't feel right. The staff are those I cannot relate with, the place is big, and I don't find myself suited for what I need to work with. It felt too big for a first job.

I felt like as if I don't belong there, like I'm some guy disguised as another man who is suppose to be here, but I took his place instead. I don't really like this place, and neither did all of my friends (some previously worked there). I admitted to my parents that I hated it there, and they kept telling me not to quit and to give the place a chance for a couple of weeks.

I don't want to work there any further, as I said before, I felt like I don't belong there as if I'm suitable for some different place. There are plenty of other places that I could consider working at, especially during Spring Break if I quit right now.
-BlockBuster (I've applied there almost a month ago while my friend was working. They are still hiring from what I could tell. Not to mention it's open until 11PM).
-GameStop (I'm now 17 years old, I know just about everything of new and previous generation coonsoles, and I won't be late due to traffic this time (I still hate the road that took them FIVE YEARS to finally make). The Time is very forgiving there, and I can always find ways to entertain myself while on duty. My dream-job so to speak).
-Subway (Slow, but steady. I love their sandwiches, the area is small but great, and it looks very easy too. The time is also forgiving).
-Toys R' Us (Especially at the Video Games department, it probably would be a good place to work at).
-Ci Ci Pizza (I love pizza, there's something going on all the time. Why not?)

What do you guys think? Should I quit Thursday and seek employee else where? Or should I stay at my job and prey very loudly at bed that it'll go well in the future and endure the pain of being there?

Tis alright. It's normal to feel that way with a new job for a week or two until you get settled in and know the ropes. Trust me, I've worked way more jobs than most people my age. It's ALWAYS like that.

Don't know how those guys are with their employees. Might be worth a look.

FUN FACT: You won't be able to entertain yourself there! You will be kept working. You will have stuff to stock and organize and customers to wait on. And enjoy the complete lack of ANY benefits and dead minimum wage.

If that doesn't sound like fun to you, then it might be a good idea to forget the dream of working with video games.

Food work IS easy. A retard could do it. A retard with only one hand that is currently halfway up his ass. You could probably do this in your sleep. Go ahead and try for it.

NO. Trust me, DONT try getting a job at Toy R' Us. Those fuckers hired me with the promise of 40 hours a week and $7 an hour. When I got there, they told me they decided to give me ten hours a week on $6 an hour. Fuck them. They are dishonest, and you really don't need that while you're still in school.

Never worked in a pizza joint before, but I can assure you that you will NOT love CiCi's pizza. It sticks to your stomach for DAYS until you forcibly vomit it out.

You're still in school I'm assuming. Unless for some reason you NEED to work while in school, I'd suggest you not even worry about a job and put all your effort into your schoolwork.

I concur with Avi's thoughts on your focusing on your schoolwork but I can say honestly...

Never work at BlockBuster. It may have been the store specifically, but the employees are even whinier than the customers. If you want to relate to your work and genuinely like it, take a fast food job. It's a good starter and everybody loves eating. I recommend mcdonalds actually. They have good plans, s'nice.

My first job was with Gamestop, and it really depends on the manager you work for when you get in. Yes, you will have to organize everything over and over again, and you will rue they minute the single mother comes in with her three 1-4 year old kids she's trying to bribe into being good. You will have mind-numbing music played over and over again several times a day that they take from games, and not the good ones.

No, there's not really going to be benefits if you get a part time job there, and you will work for minumum wage. Personally, i started at 5.15 an hour when I started there, and my only real raise was teh government-forced hike of the minimum wage to 6.75. If this is your first job, however, you will probably not be looking toward retirement, and depending on how old you are, probably not looking for medical insurance, or a dental plan (parents normally cover that until you're 18, but I don't know your situation).

The best thing about this job, however, is the job experience you get. It's not like most stores where you're either stocking, at the cash register, selling people stuff, or cleaning up. You get to do it ALL. I found it a good thing to put on my resume after I quit working there, since you get plenty of job experience within the first month.

Stop trying with on the main stream jobs they always pay you dick in salary.
Try somewhere no one else your age would even dare, Dog kennels, small hobby stores, one of those one store super markets. Not everything has to deal with the vidya.

Go work for your city. I do that and sell knives for Vector on the side and wound up making some good money in just a month.

Working for The Man will never be fun, ever. No matter how much you enjoy what it is you're selling. Unless you're the kind of person who enjoys mindless repetitive tasks and monotony.

If you want an interesting job you have to do like Mike said, try for it. Think outside the box.

Well, I'm going to give you afew words of advice based on my own experience in jobs. If you don't like stressful and inconvenient. Don't get into the service industry, if your not in an important position, they pay you shit all and have you working short but late and annoying hours, hell, I did dishwashing for seven months, and by the time I quit for my current job, which is warehouse work. I jumped for joy when I told them I'm leaving for job that pays more and provides more convenient day hours, 25-35 a week.

Also, whatever you do. Don't go into temporary staffing D:. Look around for odd jobs here and there until you find something you can be happy with~

I currently work at gamestop, and I think it's pretty fun. We acually do get to entertain ourselves here. Where I live is in the middle of the SOUTH. More specifically, Confederate City, U.S.A. Nobody here (except us working here) have the time or patience to play video games (There are ALOT of farms here). That, and the manager is my cousin Peabo.

So either get a job at Subway like my mom did (she says its fun), or move to South Carolina and find a game store.
