KEEP IN MIND: This isn't a method to modifying your PS3, as Sony INTENDED to allow anyone to install Linux onto the System. The instructions are simple, and doesn't require a mod-chip, or a screw-driver in general.Below is a guide to installing Yellow Dog Linux onto your PS3. This guide is designed to be simple and straight forward. If you feel there are errors here, or just have a comment about anything, please reply. I just finished it tonight, and I'll do further revisions tomorrow.

#AA2 - Introduction .
Got a brand new Playstation 3, and you want to make more out of it (after all, you did spend about $500 on that thing, did you)? Well, this guide is here to teach you how to turn your Playstation 3 into a Personal Computer, similar to a regular PC. You must be thinking "oh, I don't want to mod my system", well good news, you're system DOESN'T REQUIRE MODIFICATION! All you need is a simple DVD of the software, and all the requirements below, and you're already a step closer to having Yellow Dog Linux, the official Operation System designed for your Playstation 3, on your PS3.
So, you must be wondering right now "What is Linux?" Well, Linux is an open-source, free to get operation system that uses little resources of your PC compared to Microsoft Windows Operation Systems. It's very different from windows though.

#AA3 - Requirements .
You MUST have all of the following supplies (hardware and software) BEFORE moving on. If you do not meet the requirements, or even the alternative requirements, you are not ready to install Yellow Dog Linux. DO NOT PROCEED UNTIL YOU FIT ALL REQUIREMENTS, OR YOU'RE PS3 COULD POSSIBLY GET BRICKED! Keep in mind that I've used these requirements and the rest of the guide will be based on these requirements.
A Playstation 3 System (Must be either 40GB, 60GB, 80GB models or higher)
A PS3 compatible controller (Six-Axis, Dual Shock 3, Third-Party, etc)
A USB Keyboard and Mouse*
A working Computer with Windows 2000 or later, and a DVD-Burner drive*
The latest Nero Express*
A blank DVD-Recordable disc*
A Television or Monitor that supports High-Definition display (720p or higher)
A Playstation Component cord or HDMI cable
A Memory Stick Duo, SD Memory Card, Compact Flash, or a USB Flash Drive (Though not essential for this guide, one of these will be helpful for the sake of your PS3 data).
*=Alternative Requirements
If you do not have any of the requirements listed above, refer to these possible requirements.
If you're Keyboard or Mouse has a PS/2 plug, try using a PS/2 to USB converter to fix this. Although, I'd recommend getting a new USB Keyboard and Mouse altogether. Wireless Keyboard and Mouse may work.
It is possible to use a computer running Macintosh or Linux, instead of Windows.
If you don't have Nero Express, you could use ISO Recorder Power Toy, which is Freeware. For Mac OS-X users, you should use Disc Utility, or DiscBlaze.
If you don't have a blank DVD-Recordable disc, you could use a DVD-Rewritable, however, I have not tried that, so I cannot guarantee success.
If you don't have a DVD-burner drive, or a DVD-R in general, you could purchase the Yellow Dog Linux software instead. Follow this link to purchase the software:

#AA4 - Preparing Linux .
Unless you plan on purchasing the Yellow Dog Linux software, you'll need to burn a DVD recordable. Visit the following website:
http://www.terrasoftsolutions.com/support/downloads/, and follow the instructions to download Yellow Dog Linux. Links to several guides for burning a DVD is on that page (The one I used is:
http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm).
Download the latest Linux software available. Afterwards, refer to the DVD burning guide, and use any of the three programs that you have (I used Nero for this). After the DVD is successfully burnt, explore within the DVD. Look for the "PS3" folder, inside enclosed a file: TRANS.TBL, and another folder: otheros. Make sure that folder contains the otheros.bld, and TRANS.TBL files. If all is there, then there you are finished with preparing Linux.

#AA5 - Preparing the Playstation 3 .
Power up your Playstation 3, and listen to the beautiful music. Now, this is where you're Memory Stick Duo, SD Memory Card, Compact Flash, etc. is going to come into play. Back up ALL your data (anything purchased and/or downloaded from the Playstation Store may not be necessary as you can always redownload them). When you're done with that, make sure your PS3 has the latest update (if it doesn't, update it), and then go to System settings, and Format Utility, then Format Hard Disk, and select Yes, and then choose Custom, select Allot 10GB to other OS, then Quick Format, and finally select Yes, and wait for the format to finish. When it is done, push the X button. Your Playstation 3 should now be ready for installation.

#AA6 - Installing Yellow Dog Linux .
Now that your DVD is ready, and your Playstation 3 Hard Disk Drive has been formatted, now comes the big part: Install the OS! When your PS3 powers back up, insert the DVD containing the Yellow Dog Linux ISO. Make sure you have your USB Keyboard and Mouse connected before continuing, as Yellow Dog Linux (even during Installation) won't allow any usage with the Playstation 3 Six-Axis controller (or any controller in general). If all is ready, use either the controller or keyboard to go to System Settings, and go down to "Install Other OS". If the DVD burning process went well, the PS3 should find the otheros.bld file in the path: /PS3/otheros/otheros.bld. Select "Start", and wait until it is finished (should take less than a minute).
After that, go back, then go up to "Default System", and choose "Other OS" (HOLD! Make sure your Monitor settings is set to High-Def (720p or higher) and hooked into via Component or HDMI. Make sure the sound is set correct to how ever it is connected. If any mistake has been made here, you may possibly damage your PS3). The screen should then go blank for a moment, and then a bunch of text should appear. If your monitor isn't correct, then the next time the screen blanks, it won't display a thing, which means you'd be running blindly, if that happens, you may have to restart your system. If you see a screen with more text, but with penguins above, then congratulations, you got the right monitor for the job, and everything should be a breeze from there. Just wait, and don't do anything to it until you see a window with the Yellow Dog Linux Logo, and a mouse cursor (not the blue screen and gray box that looks similar to DOS). Use your mouse, and click next, and set up your OS however you like it (it should be simple from here, nothing that takes a rocket scientist to figure out). Set your Language, and click Next, and in every instance click Next or Yes. Stop after moving to the window after the previous, from here, set up your user name and password to however you want it (MAKE SURE you write it down in case you forget, because that information may be your only chance to use this OS) and then click Next. After waiting, click Next again, and grab a beer (or soda or tea if you're under 21) because this part is going to take less or more than an hour to get finished (gee, you should've seen that coming =P.). After all that waiting, the installation finishes, and you can now remove the DVD, and move on. The system should then reboot.
The system should now go through the similar process it did before when you began the installation. Now, eventually, you'll get to a window where you'll need to set your OS up, again, it isn't difficult even by the slightest (unless you don't have a clock handy). After all that, you should eventually see the Yellow Dog login screen. Just login, and there you go.

#AA7 - Starting, Using and Exiting Yellow Dog Linux .
Pretend you just returned back to your Game OS (PS3 main screen). Any time you want to use Linux again, make sure you fit all needed requirements (being a high-def monitor, and a USB Keyboard and Mouse), then go to System Setting, Default System, and choose "Other OS". The process will be similar to as if you're installing the OS, but you'll eventually get to the Yellow Dog login screen. Just simply input your User Name and Password, and Login.
Now, using Linux is pretty basic. It works similar to Windows XP and Mac OS-X. All the items you can use, which came with Linux, is found at the top. What was included for Linux is the following:
-Mozilla Firefox (for web browsing)
-Mozilla Thunderbird (e-mail client)
-Open Office Applications (all works similar to Microsoft Office Word, Excel, and PowerPoint)
Now using Linux for anything else, I cannot figure out, because I have no experience with using Linux (though I do know its really easy on the system it is operated on compared to Windows), and it doesn't play PC games neither. If anyone knows any helpful guides to do...well, ANYTHING, then please provide me with those guides.
Now exiting Linux, well one method is to shut down your PS3 using Linux to do that (just like shutting down using Windows). When your PS3 turns off, hold onto the reset button, after one beep, keep your finger on that button until you hear another beep. If done correctly, your PS3 should now go back to its own Game OS. Remember that you can visit good old' Linux any time by following the instructions of the first paragraph.
