Title: Newbie Help Desk
Description: For all the new guys

Bolts - September 24, 2007 11:14 PM (GMT)
First things first THIS IS NOT AN RP!!!, this is merely a place for asking questions about roleplaying. For example if your new and you don't quite understand the rules or your just having trouble getting started you may post your questions here and someone who has actually been active in the RP ring will help you out.......usually.

So without further delay....ask away.

Current suggested areas of help ((will be updated whenever a new one is suggested))

- RP creation including things with story, conflict, objectives, etc.

- Character creation including weapons powers and other things

- RP style, basically this is the way you RP and believe me there are alot of different ways. What works for one may not necessarily work for another as such there is no basic format for posting thus far.

- Spelling and Grammar, this area concerns more with your own ability to type. Please....if your not very good at typing I recomend this site.

...I think this could really be helpful to several people who RP here.

*glances at Ryou, Bob, and Lightning.EXE*

Lightning EXE TT_TT
I feel Dumb....

Cador_2004 - September 24, 2007 11:46 PM (GMT)
The only reasons I glanced at you is because you need to work on your spelling and Grammer, Lightning.

Lightning_EXE - September 25, 2007 12:14 AM (GMT)
Lol I'm in Grade 9 and I'm Failing English :D
lol I understand Bob, but why Ryou?

Cador_2004 - September 25, 2007 12:16 AM (GMT)
Same reason as you.

EDIT: And maybe if you can get a Google add-on for your browser, it has a spell check that you can use.

Gentlemen, gentlemen, gentlemen please...this topic is a help desk...not a pointing at the person and start judging him.

Now...as to add to the topic in a sense. There are variety of things that people could help out with.

- RP creation including things with story, conflict, objectives, etc.
- Character creation including weapons powers and other things

Well, that's all I could offer as topics.

Now to ask a question. A hypothetical question:

Assume someone were to make an RP, and they were still new to the scene, what points would you give to make it a successful RP, rather than something that'll either not get noticed or die within a few days?

And for topic senses let's say this is outside the Random Encounter thread.

Cador_2004 - September 25, 2007 12:38 AM (GMT)
Honestly, I have some trouble myself when it comes to RPing... I never make any special storyline for any of my characters, and I usually don't join other people's sub-plots. I end up just making my characters a side character, just along for the ride. >.>

*update*

first post updated to include frequently requested fields of help.

Clix - September 25, 2007 12:49 AM (GMT)
I was relatively new here and created the most popular RPG for the time. I'd say that presenting a well written opening, comprehensive world, and deep character creation would pretty much draw people in. Or at least it does for me.

deidaraofthestone - September 25, 2007 12:53 AM (GMT)
umm..I might be able to offer some help in that question ULX, I came to TFS and my first RPG was pretty successful, no? Well, technically, that wasn't my first RPG but basically, I played through lots of full RPG's and got a feel for how they went and I tried a few of my own that failed, ANW is so far my only successful RPG series, and it was started due to a conversation my dad and I were having about "Mad Max" I just thought "huh? I should make an RPG about a desert-y planet of mercenaries." I began storyboarding after that and before I knew it I had the story set up. That's got to be my biggest advice, plan the story ahead of time. I usually have the story points of my RPG's a few months prior to making them so I can expand upon them and take things into account like new members and such, so yeah, my advice when it comes to making RPG's: plan. plan. plan.

As for basic playing tips: don't be a jerk, don't disobey the GM's rules, if they're like me, then they've spent quite a bit of time and effort making their stories and they don't want people to completely override them, you can introduce plot elements and such, that's why it's an RPG and not just a story. But don't completely change the plot of the RPG just because you feel like your character isn't getting enough screen time.

last point: isn't there a topic about this kinda thing?

last point: isn't there a topic about this kinda thing?

Not really the rules topic is locked from posting, and you can't exactly ask questions in the profile thread.....as of now this is the only topic where you can ask questions about rping.

However the topic has become somewhat of a debate now......honestly people if your aren't answering a question, asking a question, or suggesting a new field of assitance then don't post in this topic please. If it works like its supposed to it will end up being cluttered enough without us spamming it.

Heeey. I get to pull something I did on another forum onto TFS.

Why hello there, little Jimmy. Are you roleplaying with Nick there? My, that looks fun! Though hold on Jimmy- You may think you have teh |_|b3r 1337 S|<1LLZ...

But you don't, remotely!

Let's start off with the basic terms of the trade, shall we Jimmy?

"The Three Ts"

Tech 1/T-1

The most simple form of RP, Based on olden games such as final fantasy, the fighting is turn based, and open-ended.

EX:
<Jimmy: Kenji lashes out with his katana, aiming for his opponent's head
Nick: Doemon ducks down under the blade, aiming a stern kick for Kenji's groin>

Hold it hold it hold it! Jimmy, In T1 There are three four defining factors!

Factor 1: The most important- Description! The more descriptive a post is, the more power it deals when it hits, in most rules! The same can be applied by "Charging-" I.e. a certain number of paragraphs before a special ability can be dealt! Even then, only limited of course.
Factor 2: Post content! If someone shoots a tank shell at you, no matter what the fuck you think, a katana will not cut it in half! Think rationally and think of how you could react in real life, if you were your character, to stop it without getting killed, or even use it against the enemy.
Factor 3: Originality! The more original a character is, the more frightening it is to an enemy- An enemy knows what to expect exactly from a Mary Sue/Gary Stu, an original character bring something new to the table- Something that someone cannot specifically pre-empt.
Factor 4; Grammar, syntax and spelling! It's incredibly important that whoever you're fighting with knows what the hell you're talking about. You should know how to read english- Sadly, some people don't know how to WRITE it! If you need a lesson, I'll put it in later!

Try again with this in mind, Jimmy!

EX:
<Jimmy: Daren jumps up into the air, every muscle in his body twitching- aching to be used, as he descended from his flight his leg stiffened out in front of him, gravity bringing him down flat onto Nick's face>

No wait! Jimmy, you're forgetting something important! That's "Auto-hitting"! One must leave attacks open, let me demonstrate!

EX:
<Dick sent out his right arm for Doemon's face, his muscles tensing and his bones erect, slammed against each other in a magnificent friction, with a fierce tortion stretching through his entire body, shoulder to toe.>

Note that, Jimmy. You've got to make your post while your attacking, not as you're connection!

Jimmy> Thanks, Dick! Now I know how to T1

Tech 2/T2

Speed style, completely unique and underestimated! It's usually annoyed for a brief fight on an AIM Chat of some sort, generally, in T2 the hits are scored as such

<Dick reached out with his fist, burning the air as it soared>
<Dick then connected with Nick's face, breaking off plenty of bone>

Nick> Ah! What was that for? And why did you post twice?

Because, Jimmy! That's the point! Anyone can get off one post quickly- The goal in T2 is to score two quick posts- (The attempt and the connection) -Before the other person can get in a post to dodge it! A player can also "Charge" on themselves, getting an attempt and connection post on themselves before they can be interrupted to get 1 extra HP. If they make a pre-attempt and then an attempt and connection, they can increase their damage by one.

The attempt needs atleast 7 words or it doesn't count, as does the dodge. The connection however needs atleast 10. One can also use a counter move, the limit for it is 12 words atleast. The last hit needs a preperation post, an attempt and then a 15 word+ connection. HP is, at default set to 5 hits.

Now, Jimmy, let's try a quick battle at one HP, shall we?

Jimmy> Alright!

EX:
Missed shot
<Dick lashed out at Jimmy with full force, arms flung out>
<Jimmy ducked down out of the way before Dick could grab him>

Hit shot
<Dick lashed out at Jimmy with full force, arms flung out>
<Dick got him in a hold, and flung him over himself in an arc. Suplexing him into the ground.>

Jimmy> Ow, that hurt like fuck! Thanks Dick, for teaching me T2!

Tech 3/T3

Auto style, the kind you'd find in IRC Chats. An example is fitting here, Jimmy!

EX:
<Dick grabbed onto Nick's shoulder, slamming his face into concrete>

Nick: Ah fuck you man! Why?!

Because Nick, you don't really exist! This is the matrix! Now, stupid questions aside, T3 is just for illustrating stories with very little description. Nothing much needed here, but it's not for forums.

Jimmy> And I don't really give a fuck! Thanks anyway, Dick!

Exercises

Well, for writiing exercises I HIGHLY Suggest using Seventh sanctum's writing challenge generator. If you want my advice on the writing- One paragraph or more for each story element. For example:

EX:
Original challenge: The story must have a kraken in it. A character becomes vengeful during the story. (Two elements)

<Dick looked out over the ocean- A ferocious storm was taking place before his very eyes. Like nothing he had ever seen. There were tentacular waves stretching out through the vast pit of water. Only to soon realize- Those weren't even waves. It was a giant sea squid- It was the Kraken! It was coming after Dick's ship, the great barracuda!

Dick was scatterbrained, shocked at the fact that his ship was now being torn, plank by plank right underneath him. His own ship- The greatest ship to ever sail the seven seas had given way underneath him, as he fell into the water, he could only think one thing. I must destroy this Kraken. He has befouled my ship.. And so... A new vengeance was born. One seeming impossible. Dick grabbed onto driftwood, and began dog-paddling to shore. That, too seemed impossible. But he needed help...>

Note that I still threw in other things- The ship, the storm, all of this. However, I could have taken it in a completely different direction. Such as:

EX:
<Dick, the soldier of the Neodymium plateau walked slowly into the temple of the Kraken, with his friend and comrade Samuel. The temple was odd- it was shaped like a large pentagonal tower. Dick looked over to Samuel, "I miss her, Sam. I'm not sure I can keep up the fight-"
"Yes, you can. And you've got to if we're going to win this war, if we want justice."

Dick sighed, shaking his head. Looking through a window on the left side of the hallway, and jumping back at what he saw. It was a real kraken- In a watery pit. "Sam! Get over here!" Dick turned around, to see not Sam... But a priest. The priest smiled, "Ah... You must be Dick Forte. It's a shame about your sister Karen..." Dick's eyes widened. "You know abou-" "Of course I know. I'm the one that... Eheh... Devoured her." The priest replied, his grin widening into a demonic, fanged look.

Dick shouted out "You... BASTARD!" Before he gave a second thought, he charged at the Kraken priest. Taking out a knuckle duster, spearing him straight through the heart with it. The priest fell to the ground. Dick shook his head. "That was for Karen, you sick fuck..." He walked off slowly, through the door at the end of the hallway to freedom.

Meanwhile... The Kraken's priest slit eyes blinked, as he was still bleeding on the ground. Smiling.>

Jimmy> Wow, thanks Dick! Now I can practice without having to spar with someone!

That's it. I'm going to make sure that in any role play I see people make a bunch of mistakes in their post, I'm going to fix it in a quote. >.<

You apparently fail at quoting, and there's only room for one Grammar Nazi here.

At the time, I just copied and pasted it, I didn't think about the qoute button until I was in the middle of correcting. As for the Grammer Nazi thing... Well, I only intend to correct it if it's really bad.

I now how to make good profiles, and a great story... My RPs always die, though, whether I stop posting from being too busy, or everyone else stops posting, save for one or two people. I can help with thinking up storylines, and making profile lay-outs and stuff.

Streea Barra - September 27, 2007 10:19 PM (GMT)
Anyways, as for requesting this to be stickied? Denied until it's actually useful. So far, I mostly just see a bunch of spam posts of people talking with each other.

O_o......did Streea just compliment me?

Ah nevermind nevermind either way so is there anything somone needs help with?

Lightning_EXE - September 27, 2007 11:29 PM (GMT)
I have something...
Topic Publicity-

I created a topic quite a while back, but no one seems to be joining it, I deemed it dead and asked Streea to close it for me...

Is there anyway to make a topic more public?

Cador_2004 - September 27, 2007 11:40 PM (GMT)
That's pretty easy to answer. Simply put a link to it in your signature.

Bolts - September 27, 2007 11:42 PM (GMT)
I actually wasn't aware you had made one or maybe I just wasn't interested ((sorry if I seem blunt there)).

But in truth there is no way to make a topic more public other than being a more respected rper.

What I have noticed is that most people tend to prefer r/p's with more medieval weapons I.E. swords and such.

HOWEVER!! This is does not mean the rp must be based in the dark ages. deidara's rp for example is highly succesfull and based in the distant future but it still allows for older weapons.....in my case.....a scythe.

Cador_2004 - September 27, 2007 11:47 PM (GMT)
And try to inhibit the RPers as little a possible. Allowing for a wider range of character designs and personalities helps to shape the RP into something enjoyable and fun.

Clix - September 28, 2007 12:06 AM (GMT)
I'm not sure if it helped me, but I did advertise Chronicles of Tana for about a week before I started it. I also focused on making the middle parts of the story user-friendly and let everything that wants to develope their characters.

Oh, and yeah, it seems like no archaic-weapon-based RPGs fail and die... URF short of had that happen, since guns just seem cheap in RPGs.

Tahuman - October 23, 2007 04:26 AM (GMT)
Hi, I'm trring to start a new RP but I don't want to wind up with an idea that's been overused

Can someone help please?

Streea Barra - October 23, 2007 04:31 AM (GMT)
Well, review what's been done. Look through old topics that have died, some that have survived. Use the ones that survived as a base for your RP, and start from there. First you'll obviously need the idea, pick something that you like, and you'd have fun running. From there, it relies on creativity.

VeeMan - October 28, 2007 07:28 PM (GMT)
Hey guys I joined this fourm some time ago but I really haven't posted. I have an idea for a game, using a fad that was started on devant art. Here's an example of what I'm talking about. Alpha's devantart ID We can use these characters with their stats and create a back story and develop a game on it. What do you guys think flop or not? Lol.

Lightning_EXE - October 28, 2007 10:07 PM (GMT)
I would think that If the back story is good, then it may attract people. I for one am a big fan of Pixel ID, but lack the ability to make one, so this may be a close as it gets for me :D

Bolts - October 28, 2007 10:54 PM (GMT)
What exactly are you planning on doing?

Lightning_EXE - October 28, 2007 11:18 PM (GMT)
Apparently he wants to make an RP about the Pixel ID fad going on around Deviantart

more importantly, the link to it is here Pixel ID fighters

Bolts - October 29, 2007 12:08 AM (GMT)
Well you've managed to spark my curiosity but how exactly do you plan on tying devianart into an rp?

VeeMan - October 29, 2007 01:46 AM (GMT)
Haha, I'm glad I got some people interested. :D Well, we can use these Pixel ID characters and give them a backstory and what not. :D I'd like to make my own but I suck at art. :P We would credit all of the artists whose IDs we'd use. And if necessary ask their premission. We'd use the characters stats as our own and get af ew characters as bosses. :D This is just an suggestion, but something I'd like to see. If the story gets too big maybe we can move it to our own forum or something.

Bolts - October 29, 2007 01:57 AM (GMT)
Ah now I see where your going with this.

Unfortunately and please take no offence to this I have my doubts about the idea. Granted it is somewhat original it takes away the member's ability to create their own character and that sometimes is why people join an rp in the first place, so that they may test out a new character. Granted it would be great if we could all make pixel arts of our characters but as the idea sounds so far I have my doubts for its success.

VeeMan - October 29, 2007 02:06 AM (GMT)
Oh, yeah dude. I completely understand, that makes alot of sense. :P I just wanted to see what others thought about it, I think I'm going to print out a few and play a kinda play a mock D&D with my friends. Lol. But if anyone would like to try this out send me a message and maybe we can work some thing out. :)

VeeMan - October 29, 2007 02:25 AM (GMT)
I have another idea too, originally it was going to be a flash movie. I'm sure most off us here are familar with Newgrounds, I thinking about doing an RP about Newgrounds! Lol. Anyways Newgrounds would be like a kingdom with Tom as the King, and groups such as the Kitty Krew and the Star Syndicate (As well as others) would attack the kindom and it would be in choas. The players could side with the the evil guys (No name as of yet) or the rebels! (The Newgrounds Knights, or something else Idk.) Characters such as Hank from Madness and Bitey would help in the fight too. Lol. What do you think?

Lightning_EXE - October 29, 2007 02:35 AM (GMT)
Sounds Innovative, I would Love to include the Lock Legion and the Clock Crew in it as well :O, only problem is that things are gonna look screwy

CaffeineCrazed - October 29, 2007 02:41 AM (GMT)
You need the clock crew, all the other groups are all based off of the clock crew.
