Title: FUNimation dubs One Piece.
Otaku no M - April 13, 2007 06:34 AM (GMT)
More news here.New VAs? Uncut DVDs? Cigars? Wow. Just... wow.
Sanji may still have a lollypop, though.

THANK. F**KING. BOB.
Now, before Kirb comes in here and makes a fuss about how we should take VA-ing at face value, I will say that in general, the 4Kids dub of One Piece is absolutely horrid in every sense that can be made.
I have no qualms about Sanji still having a lollipop, but the VA quality has risen, and hopefully things will change for the better.

Finally, a ray of light for this poor victim of anime mistreatment! Funimation is a very respectable company that actually listens to what the fans want. I can accept that there are going to be edits made, there always has to be, but I have faith that they won't be so glaring this time around.
Plus, Funimation has been very good at getting voices that fit the characters, which was in my opinion one of the biggest factors in the show tanking the first time around. Add to the fact that Funimation will be releasing an uncut version to the DVD buying public, and I believe that One Piece will finally be able to remove that black mark of shame it garnered in it's first North American advent.

THANK YOU SWEET JESUS!
Now that One Piece is safe from 4kids, maybe we can actually hear some awesome VAs, and no more silly Super Soakers!
Hazzardous - April 13, 2007 11:32 AM (GMT)
If they wish to go back to correct 4Kids, I won't stop them. My only concern is that they try to keep as much of the blood and gore they can get away with and still be within CN's standards. I remember seing both a original dub of DBZ and virtually all the blood was removed. If they can at least keep the blood on the mouth and the body, then it's alright with me...
Although, having new voices might proof refreshing...although, I've rather gotten use to Zolo and Sanji's voice....but.....<_< >_> they should consider a change for Nico Robin....that southern accent doesn't seem right...
Persona - April 13, 2007 12:06 PM (GMT)
4Kids biggest mistake was trying to market One Piece to the 6-10 age demographic. Funimation knows their viewer's age groups, so I don't think the edits will be too harsh. Funi did Full Metal Alchemist, which had it's fair share of blood, and handled that one well.
In other words, I think we've finally seen our last spring loaded mini-hammer gun hybrid. *shudder*

O.O This is a dream right?! *Happy Dance* YES!!! The nightmare's over!!! Now all I have to do is sit here and hope that the new dub comes to England.

I never really watched the anime, but if they don't want smoking, then what about that character where smoke and two cigars are actually part of his character design, and I think is actually *called* Smoker... That's kinda hard to step around.

You did read the interview, right?

So then what about the character of Smoker, who smokes two cigars at the same time? The previous version edited them out and renamed him Chaser. COOK: Well, there’s actually an exception with cigars and pipes. All we have to do is get rid of the smoke and the burning bit at the end. For whatever reason, [the FCC broadcast standards] are more concerned with getting rid of cigarettes. But cigars and pipes can be shown, provided they’re not lit or being used. |
Kinda ironic. In the 4kids dub he had no cigars but smoke coming out of his mouth. Now he might have two cigars but there won't be smoke coming from them.
GrooveMan.exe - April 13, 2007 01:42 PM (GMT)
That's what I get for skimming the article. I missed that paragraph completely.
Although that's kinda wierd.
Hazzardous - April 13, 2007 02:01 PM (GMT)
Well, eiether have unlit cigars or none at all... take it or leave it...but I'm tired of seeing Smoker's open gaped mouth with clearly CG'd smoke to cover it up...
Monikku - April 14, 2007 12:59 AM (GMT)
What makes this so funny is that it happened on FRIDAY THE 13TH! So it looks like 4Kids suffered major back luck.
Now if only Sonic X and Tokyo Mew Mew got taken, then i`d be happy (heard they ruined the ending in Sonic X and caused a MAJOR plot hole in Tokyo Mew Mew ((kinda like Inuyasha if it still aired but didnt follow the manga)))
Shin Sephiroth - April 14, 2007 01:03 AM (GMT)
Well, I did play One Piece Grand Adventure, and I could bare the voices, Luffy's voice actually did kinda match his Japanese VA to an extent
but new voices... mmmm... Yummy.
But I swear if they make Luffy sound like Gohan or Goku, I might have to shoot someone.
Oh, they'll need a GOOD Voice for Sanji's "Mellorine" mode as well.

The opening from what the site says WILL BE CHANGED. Thank god because that song was awful.

*Jumps for joy*
Finally, it'll have a good dubbing company do the work. Three cheers for reliable ol' FUNimation! =D

NO MORE TAKING A BITE OF GUM GUM :D
Starfox4ever - April 14, 2007 02:15 AM (GMT)
No DBZ voices in it. Dear god leave those voices out of it. Not that they were bad, it's just that I can't imagine the cast having DBZ voices.
And the (4Kids) openings were pathetic.
Hell, let's just get rid of 4Kids permanently and give their anime to Funimation and other distributors to be remade properly.
The only good quality 4Kids ever had was SOME of their voice actors.
armadilloHD - April 14, 2007 02:39 AM (GMT)
Am I the only onewho thought smoker looked MORE badass with smoke coming out of his mouth?
Like effing hyottoko :D

The only problem is that he wont have a CIGARETTE, BUT he can have a CIGAR. It just cant have a BURNING END (in other words its a loop hole an odd loop hole so to speak). I just dont know if he'll still breathe smoke out, but they promised that there will be UNCUT DVDS. So no worries.
Also all the Viloence WILL be back, but there will be come cuts to it, but they have GOOD REASONS for it (which I can understand since this show has a ton of voilence and gore from what I read).
Infact the WHOLE THING'S being re-made, but all of you might already know that.

Heard about this from Kyle Hebert at Tekkoshocon. Hope it's worth it.
E-Lightning - April 18, 2007 12:28 AM (GMT)
in my opinion
I didn't care abt the crappy dub stuff, sure they f***ed up the OP and those dumb accents, but
One Piece is One Piece

It isnt if the SCRIPTS MESSED UP (yeah they actulally do that)
Starfox4ever - April 18, 2007 12:44 AM (GMT)
The only thing I'm wondering now is "What if Zoro started sounding like Piccolo?"
Because Funimation did have their voice actors do the Dragonball, DBZ, and DBGT series.
E-Lightning - April 18, 2007 12:51 AM (GMT)
omg that would be so funny
and I forgot about the Script screwing
and I didn't really mind Zoro's voice from the 4kids version
