Just as a side note to what spring just said, when you want to get a clean selection of whatever is on the current layer or any other layer, say the red on the color layer, you can hold ctrl and click the layer you want. It will "load selection," which means it does the same job of selecting everything on that layer that the magic wand would do, and does it quicker and more efficiently too.

Spring the Rabbit - April 16, 2005 10:57 PM (GMT)
Ok.... I didn't know that. Poo.

Oh yeah, if you're real paranoid that your colors will mix, just give every color it's own layer. I did that for this little guy.

I was afraid I'd screw it up so I put a shitload of different layers on it.

I don't use it. But it's to control the amount of paint that goes into the brush. I don't use it because I just like to lift the pen to make it darker. You can change the flow if you don't like lifting the pen.

Also when doing the lighting... Try to make it more circular. It makes it look less flat.

I think this is a nifty and methinks this can be very useful for peoples that don't know how to shade or anything.

*Styckied. :D *

This tutorial is so simplistic, yet so....helpful! I give you congrats on this, because everyone can understand it, it's easy to follow, and helps like (I can't say hell) scrathing an itch (Oook that was lame)

Ooh! Thank you! Yeah, I needed to do this. I've been promising people I'd make this and it took me forever to stop doodling and get to work on it.

Sparks Fox - April 17, 2005 01:03 AM (GMT)
Hummm, whats that doodle in the background anyway?

Spring the Rabbit - April 17, 2005 01:04 AM (GMT)
Oh, the Pink thing? I'm working on a big high quality pic for Andres.

Sojuro - April 17, 2005 01:56 AM (GMT)
Well i used the skills i learned from your tutorial and drew my first drawing in photoshop.

Thank you once again Spring, your tutorial is awesome.

Spring the Rabbit - April 17, 2005 02:28 AM (GMT)
Welcome! Yeah, I hope this really helps people. It seems to be working.

Sojuro - April 17, 2005 07:19 AM (GMT)
I haves yet, another question. I cant really get the hang of "a source of lighting". I understand what it is, but i cant really get tha hang of it. Any tips?

Spring the Rabbit - April 17, 2005 05:20 PM (GMT)
Um. Draw with your heart? Ok... Um. I don't know how to explain this. try to imagine the drawing as a 3D object.

Teepo S.T. - April 17, 2005 06:46 PM (GMT)
Will this work with PSP8?

Spring the Rabbit - April 17, 2005 07:04 PM (GMT)
I guess. I don't have PSP but it's pretty simple so I guess so.

Sparks Fox - April 17, 2005 07:08 PM (GMT)
PSP and PS both work in the same ways but with a widly different layout, if you can do it in PS than you can do it in PSP. It's just a matter of finding where the controls are.

I can answer that, let's say your lightsource is the sun on a sunny day, maybe it is like, noon than the sun would shine on the upper left hand corner (I think) of your object, so put your lightest color in the upper right, and the shading in the lower left. It's hard to explain, but I think that's how the physics work.

Streakhc - January 23, 2006 12:21 AM (GMT)
I've been using this technique for fireworks, although I don't bother to select the part of the colouring I'm going to shade. I just cut any pieces that went out of the lines out from that layer, whee I'm lazy...
