Title: MLK Day at the Dome
Illpoetic - January 19, 2004 07:55 PM (GMT)
today I attended a march that was in celebration of Martin Luther King Jr. But not only was it in celebration of his day of birth, it was in celebration of his ideals and the things that he fought so hard and even died for.
while there I heard Reverend Al Sharpton speak live in front of my face for the first time, and I must say I now have a different impression of him than I had before. I used to look at him as that militant guy who made black people look bad as a whole, but while he spoke I heard him speaking with a lot of sense and a lot of truth and he really moved the crowd at the rally.
Another thing the rally was for is to push for the removal of the confederate flag from the South Carolina state house. It is a divisive symbol that has no place on the grounds of such a building.
another thing I wanted to say is that MLK day is not just "a day off" it is a day where the ideals and beliefs that this great man stood for should be acknowledged. As Al Sharpton put it "on someone's birthday you don't do what you want to do, you do what they want, at someone's birthday party you invite the people that they like, serve the food that they like, and play the type of music that they like." Looking at it in these terms, Martin Luther King's birthday should be a day of unity that shouldn't end today, unity that will go on forever. Division must end because first and foremost we are all human beings, and in my opinion race is nothing but a social construct. Another way to divide people. With that I would like to say HAPPY BIRTHDAY MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. (really on Jan. 15th).
and I just want everyone to think about the things that King stand for today and stand for something yourself. Because in the words of Tragedy Khadafi "if you don't stand for something then you die on your back"

yeah, it was great, me and some other members of the NAACP chapter at my school took the hour ride to Columbia this morning and I am glad we did, the unity out there was wonderful, and there were people of all colors there, it was really a nice day.
I just wish we could have ripped the confederate flag down from the statehouse and burned it right then.

I second that I don't undertsand people that have that flag on there cars and houses. That flag is meaningless it should be taken off of the state house.

There is no purpose for it. The North doesn't fly their flag anymore.....

^^Ill that's great. I had the same feeling when I heard Dick Gregory speak to us at school back in WV. I agree with everything you said. Especially it shouldn't end today. It's a continual celebration of unity and persistent efforts to completely eradicate all social constructions of reality, especially race and religion.
I made a Tribute thread for the late great MLK.
