Outside of the machine...
May God help me escape.

But look, I've fixed up my part of it.
Fine piece of craftsmanship.
Not well oiled as of now,
I had better attend to that.

But first I must leave it behind forever.

But I've set down so much of its foundation.
The building of the machine started out as a pastime,
But what of it now? Construction
Is now merely a habit.
But will you just look at how nicely it runs?

Just listen to how sweetly it hums...

The humming.

The God-forsaken humming.

I've never really listened to it before,
Unless in temporary appreciation.
Now there's no way for me to drown it,
Now that I'm aware of what it's doing.

You see, I'm not really crazy,
Not really crazy at all,

It's the humming that stops my thinking,
It's the humming.

Listen, because when you don't hear it,
The subtle influence of the sound
Halts...
It halts something...
Can't put my finger on it...
How very odd.

Oh, dear God, I forgot about the machine.
I forgot that it hums.

The machine doesn't let you.
That, you see, is what the machine does.
It keeps you from remembering it's there,
Even though all the time you are
Constantly working to perfect it
In its constant functions.

What is it's function, you ask?

Why, this is my friend Richard,
And he majored in accounting.
Math, however, isn't really my thing, --
I prefer classical literature myself
(Though I have been known to indulge
In some J.K. Rowling from time to time.)
