Title: Golden sun memories

windseer1986 - April 27, 2005 11:42 PM (GMT)
Its hard to believe that everyone joined these forums because of golden sun. I can hardly remember the last time I played it, but I thought it would be cool to talk about it a little bit, after all this time.
When I first played this game, I was amazed by the power of psynergy. As I encountered A strange woman who unleashed the grim reaper from her scythe and a man who then pummeled me with bursts of lava, I realized I wasn't playing any normal game.

What pulled all of you into this game? The powerful adepts? The mysterious characters? The beautiful music and scenery?Or something else?

SuicuneSol - April 28, 2005 12:49 AM (GMT)
WAHAHAH!!!

Hm, well, I was first amazed at the control. I noticed that when you walk around, YOU COULD WALK DIAGONALLY!! There aren't very many games where you can do that! I liked the high quality of the game, and it pushed me to further through it. And so, I played the game for some minutes, and found GARET!!! He was so cool when he was little! His display pic looked so mysterious looking and experienced! (When he got older he looked silly)

So anyways, I did find that the boulder was rather pixely. But that didn't matter. I played the game through normally until I got to the area with monsters. SUDDENLY, a burst of 3D-ness and color and graphics sort of blew up my head and I was like "WHOAAA!!!!!!!!!!! What was that?!"

And I entered my first battle! This was the first time I noticed the music, and it wasn't bad. I liked how the system worked, as it involved a very traditional battle system that looked very different. But I liked it, even though I didn't see anything stunning yet.

So I got through, and just played the whole going-back-and-forth-to-warn-people scenario. I didn't know who Felix was yet, so I wasn't too concerned. But finally, the boulder fell and I was like, "Uh-Oh." Everyone was so stunned, I didn't even realize that I had regained my control of Isaac. So yeah, like, Garet joined me again.

BUT, now I met these two completely new characters! I was about to get help when I ran into these two weird people who were talking about things I couldn't comprehend. Then Garet caught up with me, and those two weird people jumped down. I had this weird feeling that we were going to fight, because there 2 of us each; Garet and I, against and equal number of adversaries.

After some chit-chat, they said something like, "You forget everything you heard."
Then the woman said something like, "Don't worry. We'll help you forget!"

Then suddenly they pounced!

BAMMM!!MMM!!!!!!!!!!

AGAIN, my head exploded! This time, the music caught up to me!! WHOAA!!! Great battle tune! (I still consider it the best battle tune ever). Suddenly, I was facing a Mystery Man and a Mystery Woman! So I told Isaac to hit the Mystery Man and Garet to hit the Mystery Woman. I did about 7 damage each. Then, Menardi, showed me some graphics! First, she Volcanized Garet, and killed him. And I was like, "I'm not going to survive this..." Then, Saturos used this thing called Pyroclasm, and finished off Isaac. I was so sad that we lost, but it was so cool! After that, I had to continue!!

Issac - April 28, 2005 02:16 AM (GMT)
and me ^_^

i only started plying it because of my old(i dont know where he is now) friend Jordan.

He let me play for a bit... he was stuck in Mercury Lighthouse(passed the ply thingy, stuck on wondering where to go next) i just hopped on a platform and started bouncing on water o_o? lol thought i could do that all the time... until the forth jump and looked like i was drowning lol

i made it to satorus(didnt know who he was) and we battled(got slottered of course cause i didnt know how to play than) and than poof! suddenly im in Imil...

so i asked my parents to buy it... they said no to me :(

I was really sad :(

than suddenly they say they got a surprise for me and there it is ^_^ Golden Sun ^_^ :D

the_isaac - May 4, 2005 08:53 PM (GMT)
I really don't remember, since it was such a long time ago. But what I liked most in the game was the plot, the characters and the music. It all just worked out so nicely.

It was my friend Konrad (who prefers being called Adde) who introduced the game to me. I didn't really care much though, since his brother said the game sucked and was really gay. And then somehow I got into playing it, and then I finally bought it myself, and a while after that I bought the lost age.

windseer1986 - May 4, 2005 09:42 PM (GMT)
for some reason a lot of people seem to think this game was horrible...if you look at the reviews at gamefaqs, there are some that give this game 3 or 4 out of 10.
Then again, most of the reviews at gamefaqs are done by fanboys of something-or-other, so it mostly amounts to OMG THIS GAME WAS NOT AS GUD AS FFVII OH NOES I WILL GO SHOOT MYSELF NOW.
If you look at the reviews for FFTA, Pretty much all of the bad ones go like this:
Final fantasy tactics was sooo great OMG I want to have the creator of FFT's Children I worship FFT and have some kind of shirne set up for it in my closet. OMG this game wasnt as good as the original FFT so it should therefore get a 2/10.

DJA - May 4, 2005 10:48 PM (GMT)
I remember that before GoldenSun I had never seen a game where you could use your powers out of battle, that the plot and graphics made me buy it

Brendor The Ogre Cleaver - May 4, 2005 11:16 PM (GMT)
when it came everyone had it at school and i didn't...know what i still don't own it but i borrow it and it was SOOOOO COOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! though i was soo sad and upset when i lost to sat. and mern. i shut it off before i knew what happened. then i asked a friend and he said to do it again w/out shutting it off. ahh those were good days. ^_^

Snipe104 - May 5, 2005 01:06 AM (GMT)
What made me get it is hearing all the good stuff about it from you guys. ^_^ I like the battle and the puzzles.

...perhaps - May 7, 2005 12:19 AM (GMT)
I got it because my older brother had it and my little brother had played it on his game pack and they thought it was great. I think my older brother had two saves, so I couldn't very well play on his. I like to have all the save space to my self on gameboy games anyway.

Mathias - May 7, 2005 09:59 PM (GMT)
i remember hearing about it on Xplay and i was just like, oh whatever....GBA games suck
then a couple of days later i was at a friend of mines house and he was playing the GBA
"so what are you playin?"
"Golden Sun"
"oh yeah, that game sucks"
"here, check this out, im summoning Atlanta" (may have spelled wrong)
*looks down*
..............................
"OH MY GOD IS THAT GAME LIKE TEN MINUTES LONG HOW CAN THEY PUT THOSE KIND OF GRAPHICS IN A GAME BOY!!!!!! JUST LOOK AT THE CARTRIDGE!!!!"
"yeah its pretty cool, wanna borrow it?"

he didnt see it again for a couple of months.....in fact, nobody saw me for a couple of months u_u

ZaberTheAlmighty - May 11, 2005 10:48 AM (GMT)
Heheh... There's this thing, that said if you train, and only hit Saturos, Menardi will flee and Saturos will join you. I used a gameshark, did as it said, and sure enough, Menardi fled. But no Saturos.

...perhaps - May 13, 2005 01:23 AM (GMT)
Did you try focusing on Menardi to see what would happen then? I would have.

windseer1986 - May 14, 2005 07:17 PM (GMT)
I've heard that even if you beat them, the same thing happens as when they beat you.

Snipe104 - May 14, 2005 11:18 PM (GMT)
 Yea, it does happen that way sadly, for there is no win programmed in.

windseer1986 - May 15, 2005 03:15 PM (GMT)
It wouldn't really make sense for you to beat them, but it would be funny if they hobbled away, and then some rocks fell down and knocked you out instead.
Garet: yes! We beat them!
isaac:(in sign language)sorry, they won't let me talk in this game.
Garet: Hey, whats that sound?
(rocks fall from the bove and crushinate them both)
Garet: Oh no! I don't want to die in any evil rockslide! Isaac, call for help!
Isaac:(signing) Did you not understand me the first time? I only get paid for this if I don't talk at all!
(cut to title screen intro thing)

Snipe104 - May 15, 2005 04:18 PM (GMT)
Or mabey something like this.:

Garet: Yes we beat them, oh yea! *does a dance*
Isaac:*Shakes head*
Garret:Since we beat them, I bet we could lift one of those boulders, lets go!
Isaac:(in sing language) We only won because you forgot to lock your door and a your bed slid down here and knocked them out.

*They go lift the boulder and knock themselves out.

GOLDEN SUN copyright nin..........

Mathias - May 18, 2005 02:04 AM (GMT)
or maybe like this.....

Garet:Wow Isaac, we were able to beat them!!
*Isaac pumps fist in the air, but accidentally knocks out Garet in the process*
*Isaac looks down at Garet, scratching his head, when the Wise One sneaks up and knocks him out*
Wise One: Haha!! My will be done!
*The Wise One turns into a disco ball and celebrates the opening of the game*

Swordmaster - May 18, 2005 03:24 AM (GMT)
hahahahah, hilarious... HA!

windseer1986 - May 18, 2005 04:55 PM (GMT)
Disco ball! HAHAHA that was great! Instead of the normal sad music, it would play some horrible 70's music at the intro! Shake shake shake! Shake your booty!

Rozzlynn - May 26, 2005 09:33 AM (GMT)
Heh, that would be something.

I bought the first game about a year ago, because I had a GBA and needed games for it, and Golden Sun was an RPG. There wasn't much to choose from. Playing through the opening sequence, I was mildly annoyed that I couldn't save Felix in time, then mildly annoyed that I couldn't beat that mystery couple with a pair of little boys, then mildly annoyed when the screen went dark and I had to wait a second to see what happened next... I guess it absorbed me rather well from the start. Looking around Vale in the daylight, it was interesting to find a starting point that wasn't an entirely wholesome little village; there were definite hints of xenophobia in the elders and a desire to escape in the young. They even had that little girl near Garet's house saying how jealous she was that Garet got news of the outside world! (Is it wrong to be glad about what happened to Vale after all?)

Sneaking into Sol Sanctum with an annoying old man who seemed to be acting very recklessly ("No kids, let's not tell the authorities!"), I ended up making Isaac argue with Kraden as much as possible; hearing Jenna imply how much of a mama's boy Isaac is was an unexpected reward. It was a little annoying, first time through, that I couldn't see what happened when you moved the statues in every possible order, but the star chamber soon dismissed that thought. That glowing cavern, where Kraden talked of oceans and Alchemy... That was when the game first looked beautiful to me. It was mildly annoying again when I couldn't stop the thieves leaving with three stars and two hostages, but seeing a blue haired man pause and mumble "Such power..." did a lot to soften the blow. I tested the Wise One's patience wandering out at my own pace, double checking each corridor for items, and found that it did really have the patience of a piece of programming. I'd sort of hoped for something more alarming to happen, what with a volcano erupting around them.

Leaving Vale's gates with everyone there to wave farewell, and stepping out onto that huge, fuzzy world map... That felt quite good. Time to explore. Of course, I then got stuck every ten minutes. It took me an awfully long time to figure out which bits of fuzzy scenery you had to do something to. Eventually, after wandering around outside Goma Cave with Isaac and Garet for forty minutes, I went out and bought the strategy guide. It really helped. Without a guide, I'd have been stuck jumping and drowning in Mercury Lighthouse forever. Absolutely forever. Took me long enough to figure out the guide as it was. By the time I reached the top, I could have hugged Saturos.

Most of the game was fun, really. Sneaking around in the dark in Altmiller Cave was one of the highlights, even if I wished Isaac would just fight all the guards rather than letting them shove him out. He would have been strong enough. Still, I guess that wouldn't have been quite as fun. Finding the way up Venus Lighthouse took ages, but was certainly worth it. The scene you get for saving clear data was a little frustrating to watch, as the fact that I had to stop Felix and the others eventually was on my mind throughout it. The first game made it very, very clear that lighing the Lighthouses was a bad thing. I didn't buy the second game until months later, when I'd forgotten a lot (I had no idea who the blue haired guy at Idejima was anymore, making the start very confusing), and everything seemed very strange for most of the way through. Then I went back to the first game, and everything was the same, but different. It was a little disorienting. I'm still going to have to replay GS1 many more times before I can recall and understand every part completely. I'm making progress, at least.

*Sigh...* Golden Sun memories...

windseer1986 - May 26, 2005 09:48 AM (GMT)
Yeah, the second one had me a bit confused for a while too. I missed trying to stop saturos and menardi, no matter how cliched the plot was back then, at least I felt I had a reason for it, whereas it took forever to even realize why Felix is trying to light the beacons. I really miss playing through the first game(I must have done it at least 9 or 10 times). I think once I've finished making a bit more of galia, I will go and re play it once more...Its been years, now that I think about it.

Rozzlynn - May 26, 2005 10:16 AM (GMT)
The plot feels cliched the first time, but after that, don't you just feel like joining Felix in telling Isaac and Garet they shouldn't have come? And the end was actually a little horrifying, second time through. But there was nothing I could do to save them... I prefered the second game, even first time through, but the first game's still something special. I miss playing through it now, and I'm actually in the middle of a replay - I'd just miss being on the computer more right now if I turned on the GBA. I love free time...

windseer1986 - May 26, 2005 10:45 AM (GMT)
Free time is awesome. I've got so much of it now that school is out ^_^
I do really miss my first time through the game, when I could not put it down, moving from town to town, discovering all the little hidden items, interacting with the environment using psynergy, tracking down new djinn...I definitely want to replay this game soon. Maybe once I've got the next demo up I'll take a break from gamemaker and fire up my GBA...I just hope I can find the cartridge '-_-
oh, have you ever done this: on the boat, you pick certain people so that one side of rowers is really weak, the other side is strong, so that the boat veers off course and you can explore crossbone isle early? I think that was what I did my last time through the game. Its a good way to get powerful items early, but after a certain point you do not have the right psynergy to go further.

Rozzlynn - May 26, 2005 11:24 AM (GMT)
I tried to guess the order of rowers for that first time through, and got it wrong. I was just about strong enough win against Deadbeard, only having to switch off once, when I finally made it there. Second time through, I thought I was too low level to go there early. I'm going to have to try it this time for sure. If I'm too weak, I can just train on the beach for ages.

I think I enjoyed my first time through GS2 most, when finding all the items and djinn was new, but I still knew what I was doing. The plot was a nice surprise too! I'm enjoying GS1 more replaying it, and seeing it from different angles. Replaying the second game's fun, but I do miss the first time through, when I couldn't put it down...

Free time is excellent. (I'm sure it's enjoying all the compliments too.) I'm only on study leave though, so I'm going to have to revise at some point. Not looking forward to that.

windseer1986 - May 26, 2005 11:40 AM (GMT)
I think the lowest level I beat deadbeard was 22. His spark plasmas/freeze prisms hurt a lot in that battle. >.< I'm pretty sure you can't get to him from the boat though, because you need carry to get through one of the levels and cloak to get through another, and you don't get them until later.
Now that I think about that, I don't think I even got cloak the first time I played. I accidnetaly saved in town after fusion dragon because I thought the game would be much longer, so I had to restart. It took me a long time to find it since I wasn't using any guides or faqs. In fact I think the only thing I didn't find without a guide was crossbone isle, which I came .5 seconds away from finding(I turned off the power after the tornado picked me up, right as it was about tos how me landing on the island #-_- ) Then I read about the isle on Gamefaqs and I was like "WHAT!?! Why didn't I find that!" It was kind of nice though, having a new place to go through months after I thought I had beaten everything.

Rozzlynn - May 26, 2005 12:03 PM (GMT)
22? Wow. Pity about Carry and Cloak, but I guess I can always go back. I think, technically, you did find everything on your own, you just weren't aware of it. It does sound nice, finding more to the game months later. I'm getting qiute a lot of replay value from answering questions differently and trying things in different orders. I joined Mia before I went to Biblin or Kolima, but she didn't say much in the scenes there, and Lord McCoy called her a lad. >.<

windseer1986 - May 26, 2005 10:27 PM (GMT)
I find that trying different class setups to use as you gothrough the game adds replay, too. At least it did for GS2. I've mostly stuck with the base classes in GS1 though. I also spent a lot of time looking for secrets, like this one: in the place where you get the elven rapier, you can use reveal on the back wall to find a door that leads to some water of life and stuff like that(I think). I thought that was kind of cool because who would think of going back to that place and using reveal? I like games that have a lot of secret spots like that.

the_isaac - May 27, 2005 11:59 AM (GMT)
Golden Sun has too many XP Everytime I replay it, I travel around Angara twice, to make sure I have everything.

Rozzlynn - May 27, 2005 12:56 PM (GMT)
You can never have too many secret spots! First time through GS2, I even missed a summon... That added quite a bit of replay value. The classes are great too. They do add more to GS2, but I haven't played GS1 as many times, so the different base classes are still new. I'm making Garet the main healer this time, with all the Mercury djinn, as his Mars Psynergy isn't the best against the Proxans in all those major battles.

...perhaps - June 1, 2005 02:51 AM (GMT)
I think that I know one instance of what is more or less too many secret spots. Majora's Mask has very little main gameplay and a ton of sidequests. Of course, they're not even secret spots but rather just things to do in the same area. Ultimately though I guess that it was such that you couldn't feel like you'd really beaten it until you got all the masks (which I personally never did) which made it so there were almost no extra goals.

the_isaac - June 1, 2005 09:00 AM (GMT)
what about wind waker?

1. Nintendo Gallery <--- ANNOYING!

2. Pieces of Hearts

3. All the treasures

4. All the items and upgrades

5. Defeating Ganon ofcourse

>.<

...perhaps - June 2, 2005 12:45 AM (GMT)
What about it? The game may have been kinda short, but I didn't find the sidequests to feel like the main game, and thus a lack of sidequests. Also they were more of secret areas. It made it more interesting. Let us moderate this tangent.

the_isaac - June 2, 2005 07:56 PM (GMT)
I completed the whole nintendo gallery, so all I have left is getting all the charts and all the pieces of hearts. (and ofcourse salvaging all the treasure)

windseer1986 - June 4, 2005 07:05 PM (GMT)
aww, my topic got moved? It was about golden sun, though...

Mathias - June 24, 2005 08:42 PM (GMT)
windwaker....i have everything and that game.....everything......except for one piece of heart.....i looked everywhere for, and even read a couple of stradegy guides, but i cant find the missing heart peice, but i did find a lot of interesting ways to kill the moblins on the random platforms out at sea involving bombs and light arrows.....if only i could show you :P

...perhaps - June 25, 2005 02:07 PM (GMT)
I think my brother has everything except a single heart piece in A Link to the Past. Maybe they started a policy in days long past to always have one short of enough heart pieces to drive you nuts.

Aulakauss - July 3, 2005 08:10 AM (GMT)
Heheh, yeah I think they do leave ONE Piece of Heart out to drive you nuts.. Anyhoo, My dad bought GS three years ago in Sacramento on his way to pick me up from a field trip. I now have beaten it 8.9 times (.9 since I'm like level 13 and at the last battle of the game, no idea how I pulled that off) and TLA about 3 times, and have both enshrined on my dresser. I still play TLA now an' then.. anyway, I was AMAZED that I could (as mentioned before) WALK DIAGONALLY!! That alone captivated me and redeemed my view of the GBA. I played it through as "Zach" (Isaac) and felt horrible for actually KILLING Saturos in the end(he kicked butt, and I think was there only 'cuz Menardi was dragging him along) but cackled at Menardi as she fell in. (she went in first, so she likely grabbed him and pulled him to his death , the evil little wench) The Lost Age I did first as Zach being the only renamed character, beat it at level 47 for Zach, 51 for Piers, and everybody else 46. I liked Alex as he never was on anybody's "side", but just, well, Alex. He talked in this awesome mysterious way, but he looked like girly man in his avatar. Oh, well he's still cool. In GS3(A man can dream, can't he?) I'd love it (you listening Camelot?!) If you'd let us PLAY as Alex for a tiny bit, I mean, come on.. what'd he ever do? He never ONCE attacked anybody without cause.. I just wish I could have saved Saturos.. I MISS HIIIMMM!! WAHHHHHHHHH!!!! He was so well mannered compared to Karst and Agiato, but so was MenardiI guess. I spent most of my time playing the games just harassing things and reading minds. There was so much to whack with Force. Also, in GS3 (Okay, by now, I'll admit I'm delusional and deprived of GS contact, and I've just beaten Pikmin 2 so I'm in that cursed down-time between games) I would like to see Dark and Light Psynergy Adepts. (One each playable at least) I.. (sniff) I had almost forgotten about GS's world, but now that I think about it.. I'm saddened. I miss them all, and the story's plot twists and music.. I can't LIVE anymore!! I NEED GAME!! AULAKAUSS SAD!! Mehhhhhehehhh... (sobs) Oh, yeah, and my friend thinks Mia is hot, just thought of that. :P If you're still awake after reading that.. you deserve a reward. (GOLDEN SUN 3 MAYBE?!) Camelot, you torment me to the depths of my soul for leaving me, no, everyone hanging on that.

Mathias - July 3, 2005 08:55 AM (GMT)
well......uh......welcome to the nest!!

and.....alex and saturos should both be in your team and.......they should have golden sun 3 and.......im really tired its 4 am

the_isaac - July 4, 2005 07:36 AM (GMT)
I had everything in ALTTP ^_^ Even the last piece of heart :P It's one of my favorite games, so I've played it through countless times.

Slayer - July 6, 2005 04:46 PM (GMT)
^hehehe. Also what made me get this game its stupid but the box looked tight and me I the box tells everything about the game and for the real GS fans I found some tight pictures they almost made me cry.The website is www.planetnintendo.com/goldensun they will make u
