Title: What I Have Planned For My Sks
Murf the Elder - November 17, 2009 04:36 PM (GMT)

Yes, I'm aware that I'll be playing the 10-and-Under game with the ATF, but I've already verified all my changes to make sure that I'll be legal.
Basically:
- Take a stock Yugo 59/66
- Remove the grenade launcher and sight
- Replace the grenade launcher with a muzzle brake
- Replace gastube and handguard with a US made one
- Replace the original mag with a Tapco 20-rounder
- Peep sights (either Williams or Mojo...haven't decided which yet)
- Leave the bayonet lug in place so that I can always put the blade back on later if I want to
There'll be a few internal tweaks: trigger job, spring-loaded firing pin, etc, but those don't affect my [very poor] MS Paint conceptual drawing.
So...opinions?
*Edit*
Basically, I'm satisifying my lust for an M1A (that I can't afford now and will never be able to justify) by turning my SKS into a poor man's imitation.

Pretty close. (t)

thats a pic of an m14 ...
woops, my bad. i thought you were talking about the m1 and not the civil m14 ...

Same gun
*Edit*
No worries. You say M1, M1 Carbine, or M1A around a lot of people, and the first mental image they get is that they're all the same gun. Easy mistake to make.
*Edit x2*
A lot of people already consider a stock SKS to be a poor man's M1, anyway. ;)

I want an M1A myself pretty bad but they are quite price and can't piece them together as easily as an AR.
I like your plans. I am particularly happy that you are keeping the original stock and not putting some plastic piece of arse on it.
How are you going to put the brake on? I have a 14x1LH dye and TAT(fits in the barrel so you the thread are made right) to thread a barrel as long as it is within a couple of tenths of an inch to .55. If you want to borrow it let me know, they can be a pain in the butt to get online if they are out of stock. I threaded by AK barrel and it works just fine. I have shot a few hundred rounds out of the AK with suppressor on and no baffle strikes, so the threads must be good to go.

The original NATO launcher adaptor is left-hand threaded onto the barrel and pinned in place. Drive out the pin, unscrew the launcher, and the TAPCO brake screws right on in place.

M1As are cool as hell, but wicked impractical from a hobbyist perspective. It's not as good as AR-15 service rifle or the 1903 for competition (plus nearly 4 times the cost and triple the ammo price), the barrel has a much shorter lifespan than other long range rifles (plus more expensive to replace) and there are plenty of other rifles in its caliber class that are more modular, less expensive and have greater inherrent accuracy. AR-10 is way up there and the FAL/G3 family is a better battle rifle. I love the action type (who doesn't?) but it's really much heavier than it needs to be. The finest examples of M1As are fantastic rifles, but they're so expensive that the opportunity cost just makes them not so hot.
All told, I'd rather have a Garand with lots of money left over for ammo.
Now, if it were 1960 and the gov't were footing the bill... :bang:
Murf the Elder - November 17, 2009 05:25 PM (GMT)
Well, if we're talking dream gun, then give me an L1A1 and a few cases of ammo.
But since I can't very easily mock up an SKS to resemble an FAL... :P
FAL > M1A in regards to function...but the M1A is WAY sexier. ;)
*Edit*
Plus, if I was to buy one, it'd have to be used, as Springfield Armory is on my list of gunmakers that I don't want to give any money too. Bastards. :bang:
cockerpunk - November 17, 2009 05:29 PM (GMT)
murf, we agree on something else.
FAL > *
a friend of mine is a huge G3 fan, but i literally will FAL spam him in RL. he'll be talking about the G3 and all start nice and soft with "FAL" and after a minute or two be almost yelling "FAL" at him.
its rather funny. he gets pretty pissed.
Murf the Elder - November 17, 2009 05:31 PM (GMT)
G3 (and the CETME it came from) are both crap. Anyone who says otherwise needs to read the "You suck and we hate you" HK letter. :D
CP, where have you been all week. It's been awful quiet around here.
cockerpunk - November 17, 2009 05:36 PM (GMT)
eh, they are fine guns. but WAY overpriced. the FAL is just better. the delayed blowback system comes from the MG42 at a basic level.
i was at home and super busy all weekend. stupid 50 paintball test that everyone was begging for.
TrojanMan - November 17, 2009 06:10 PM (GMT)
Murf, if you have coin (which you obviously don't if you're screwing around with an SKS :P ), check out Fulton Armory. They're right down the road here in MD and they make some nice guns. A bit of a competition slant to most of them, but they build practical models, too. They also do refurb jobs on some of the shot-out milsurp rifles if you want that old receiver/SN mysique.
Too spendy for me, though. If I do a milsurp refurb, I'd rather do it myself anyhow.
Then again, if we're concerned with price, that makes the Mosin Nagant the best rifle available in the US right now.

Already got that. ;)
Of course, if the BATF would do away with that retarded "once an MG, always an MG" rule, they could demil a whole assload of M-14s and sell them to the public. Make some money off of 'em instead of having them collect dust in a warehouse somewhere.
Of course, no way in hell that'll happen...especially not anytime in the next 3 years.
TrojanMan - November 17, 2009 06:32 PM (GMT)
NFA needs to just go away entirely, but yeah, something like that.
Archerec - November 17, 2009 06:41 PM (GMT)
I want a Garand, too. As soon as I get some extra cash I am going to place an order for one. $500 from the CMP!
Of all the used springfield M1As I have seen, and that isn't very many, they have been $1200. That is still really high.

Even the Polytechs have gone through the roof, since the Chinese import ban.
And I don't mean "Even the Polytechs" to sound like I'm talking down about them; they are some darn fine rifles, and GREAT for showing up arrogant, over-confident SA owners.

I have seen people from Canada post on gunboards about getting chicom M1As for $400. Makes me sick. I wouldn't care if they were junk. I a little patience and TLC can go a long way while I save up my $1200.

Simple answer? Because it's unecessary (unless you get one of
THESE)
More complicated answer? Because I need to swap it out for a US-made muzzle brake in order to be in compliance with 922®
TrojanMan - November 17, 2009 07:19 PM (GMT)
Without rifle grenades, they're pretty useless...
However, I've heard from a guy who heard from a guy...
3" length of 2"dia A56 sch40 pipe
2" x 1/2" threaded reducer
Golf balls + blanks

Yeah, that's the basic idea of the link in my response up there. I'd love to show up at the tee with that in my hand. :D
Slinky - November 17, 2009 07:25 PM (GMT)
that is AWESOME!!!
now someone needs to rig one up to shoot Nerfies
TrojanMan - November 17, 2009 07:31 PM (GMT)
Nerf mini footballs are shot far more efficiently with compressed air. Very large diameter for their mass means a rapid-expansion gas like gunpowder would force the football out long before it ever built up enough pressure to get it to go very far. Long barrel, large reservoir, low pressure compressed air is the way you want to go if you're looking for distance.
But most fields have a 200FPS limit, so 12g carts are the easiest portable choice.
And, believe it or not, 12g carts @ <50 cents a pop are cheaper than rifle rounds. Blanks are slightly cheaper if you can find a good source but are often more expensive just because there's not much call for them.
You could roll your own blanks if you reload for about 15 cents a pop, but there's startup costs involved with that.

Yup, its why I dont run with propellants. CA is where its at.
papaintballer - November 18, 2009 12:22 AM (GMT)
hmmm... just got NFA magazine today. Have the M1A's in there or 1200 also. Very suprised to see that.
All I have to say gun wise is PA = win. tasers and pepperspray are illegal, but tracers, subsonics, high cap mags, and just about everything else is fully legal. imagine that...

ok guys, people here seem to know just about everything so...............................whats the meaning of life??? B)
nahthan - November 18, 2009 11:47 AM (GMT)
TrojanMan - November 18, 2009 01:14 PM (GMT)
Common misconception. That's the answer to life.
The meaning of life is to "Try and be nice to people, avoid eating fat, read a good book every now and then, get some walking in, and try and live together in peace and harmony with people of all creeds and nations." But it's nothing really special.

The meaning of life is to take a $75 hunk of steel and turn it into something awesome. :P
