Title: You Know What Really Grinds My Gears?
wispaintstyle - November 16, 2009 04:35 PM (GMT)
Kirby.
Why do they hide who they are? Why can't they just sell the thing in a store? Why do they adamantly deny that they are kirby til the end of the interview? Known a few people that had that "job". None of them sold 2 vacuum cleaners.
Still raging... could have spent the time applying at taco bell....

Thanks bored. That made my day.
I think they owe me the warehouse job that I went in there for.
edit- that's a joke, I realize that know one owes a job to anyone.
turbo chicken - November 16, 2009 08:23 PM (GMT)
it is a warehouse job ... your helping the distributor get the stupid vacuums out of his warehouse... lol

Both of my brothers worked for them. I dont think they ever sold a single machine, well my older bro did, He sold it to mom.
The discount was great.
I know the demos they want their employees are friggin long. Im pretty sure its a pressure tactic to make a sale.
Actually consider yourself lucky that you didnt get a job as its all commission or at least it was.
WheresWaldo - November 16, 2009 09:03 PM (GMT)
You know, its funny that you mention kirby. A few weeks ago I had a salesman stop by and I said what the heck. My gf was out of town and I was bored. The demo was neat, and I got my living room cleaned. Besides the insane price it was a hard sell for me since I have a dyson vacuum from all my hotel points and a very nice carpet scrubber.
I ended up sharing a beer with the salesman and chatted about Delaware since he grew up there. Being a salesman myself I noticed he mentioned he had a dog so I had some free samples laying around in my office and gave him a few. Once a salesman always a salesman I guess
While your at it, avoid vector marketing. My gf tried that and I explained to her why our Shun knives were better, followed by Alton Brown
Anyways never ever take a job that is heavily commisioned job. I'm lucky that i'm mainly salary. Theres something to be said about a steady paycheck. Also do research before a job interview. If you can't figure out who they are, its probably a bad gig. If you do find info, good for you, many employers expect you to know something about them.

Good points from WheresWaldo
and dyson vacuums are fantastic, IMO. The Wife and I have had one of the pet hair model dysons for over 4yrs now . . . a big dog and 3 cats make it kind of a necessity. It gets a workout, it just keeps working like the day it was new.

My dog, good choice. But you didn't get those silly "Alton's Angles" things, did you? The good thing about those was that since they were recently discontinued, a lot of places have them on ridiculous clearance prices. And it's a perfectly good blade, just a crazy handle.
Maybe they're better for tall people? I can barely reach kitchen counters, you know, so jacking up the knife angle isn't doing me any favors.
If you don't mind buying them singly or if you want to add to a set, actually check Williams-Sonoma every so often. No, you should never buy anything from them at their advertised price. Everything there has a 20% markup above retail just because it's W-S, they have a nice catalog and yuppies dig it. But occasonally they'll overorder something and cut it by 50% or more; I guess to get rid of it. I have no idea how that business model works (hoping you'll buy more than just that item, I guess?) but I'm not really one to complain. Noodles picked up a 5.5" granton santoku for ~$45 maybe 5, 6 months ago. Of course, now we get a sh*t ton of junk mail from them, but whatever. It's at least got BTU value.
Speaking of selling stuff, I finally got an RO system hooked up. Seems to work very well, but I don't have a TDS meter or anything to tell for sure. I wanted to ask you if you know of a product called "RO Rite." I used brewing salts and sea salt for this last batch but both of those are fairly expensive as far as that goes. I heard from another brewer that RO Rite is an inexpensive salt blend for aquariums that's a little higher in calcium salts and is pretty good for beer. Essentially, I'm looking for a medium salinity profile for fresh water. Think cold river water from limestone-bottom springs. That's ideal, but really whatever gets me close is fine. Water quality isn't critical for every style. A pound would last me forever. I'm sure you guys make something like that but I have no idea what it'd be called.
BTW, Noodles and I are staying in DE Fri and Sat after Thanksgiving and we've got nothing to do yet. I don't think we really want to go shopping (not that I've got any money to spend anyhow) so if you guys are going to be up there, let me know if you'll have some free time.

Well I think we will be staying here in NC for the holiday. Barbara works retail so she'll be slaving away most of the time. I will probably take mon-wed off and see if I can finally sneak out and catch some saltwater fish.
As far as RO rite. We don't make much (yet) in the area of anything in that area. However I'm sure there are numerous products out there that are added to RO water to replenish what is taken out via that filtration. I don't see why any of them would be detrimental to humans- since its safe for fish. The first one comes to mind is made by seachem.
http://www.seachem.com/Products/product_pages/Replenish.htmlYour three most common companies that may have something like this would be seachem, kent marine, and brightwell. If you find anything by those 3 companies to your liking let me know. I can look for it at one of my aquatic accounts and swap some product.
Who is RO rite made by? I did a quick google search and didn't find a definitive answer. I saw some posts saying RO rite was made by API (aquarium pharmaceuticals). If so...i'd go with one of the companies above.
I just bought new cartridges for my RO/DI unit since we're trying to get back into our hobby and spend some quality time together. We're almost done getting all our plumbing components for our new tank we're putting in. I just forgot some pieces since i'm centering the sump to make room for any upgrades we plan in the future. Hope it turns out well! Also can't wait until we're ready to make the trip down to Georgia to a livestock wholesaler and get stuff dirt cheap and see all the real exotic stuff!

eureka boss kicks the crap out of the dyson ...

Shuns are awesome, especially the classic series. I'm not familiar with this "angle" thingy they got, unless its those ugly Ken Onion series - but traditional style knives for me please. W-S is mad over priced, but if you work there you get fantastic discounts. One of my cooks got the Wustof Ikon series with African Blackwood handles for around $500 bucks. The 8" Chef's knife of that set is normally $220 or so alone!
TrojanMan - November 18, 2009 01:22 PM (GMT)
They jacked the handle up 15* or so. I don't like them.
It's a shame, too, because the engraved caricature is about the coolest thing ever.
WheresWaldo - November 18, 2009 04:35 PM (GMT)
Yeah I have the classics. I'm glad I bought them when I first got my house and had money to spend. Probably going to have to send these out to be sharpened soon since I'm sure I have plenty and bad cutting habits. Then again they still slice through tuna like butter when i'm making sashimi or poke.
Knives that don't cut well grind my gears!

So after reading this thread, a few hours a lady calls the house, and the name includes kirby. SHe wouldnt tell me what it is, just saying I get a free cleaning of two rooms.
Me: is it a vacuum? steam cleaner? regular carpet cleaner?
Her: let us come by and show you.
Me: well i would like to know. I have a really good vacuum. if it is I'll pass.
Her: yes it does clean the floors.
Me: Does it suck?
her: no.
Me: why would I want a vacuum that doesnt suck. Isnt that the point?
then I hang up.
