Title: Pep Boys Fun
Bored383 - November 9, 2009 02:22 AM (GMT)
I walked up to the parts counter and asked for a boot for a ball joint
the dude was at first all "...ball...joint...? did you say...ball joint?"
yeah
"is that like a tie rod end....?"
sorta
and it went down hill from there
my friend who was with me works on the sea whiz for the navy and he just went off on the guys - it was comical - the dudes behind the parts counter were literally looking at me like I had 3 heads
it was almost as bad as the time at another pep boys where I had to try to, and ultimately fail, to explain what JB weld and helicoil is

I know how you fee. Anytime I have to do any business at the Academy Sports gun counter, I have to make sure I don't go off on the idiots working there.

now there is a couple guys i make sure and grab at the local parts store so i don't have an issue. They are old retired mechanics one still certified and such
but let me go to a store where i don't frequent ...
my last trip my neighbor wanted me to put a speedy boot/split boot on the inner part of his CV axle ... the guy insisted that he needed the car make and model ...

oh and did i mention that autozone is the last place i visit though ...
usually i'll have napa or advanced autoparts order it for me...
the oriley and if i have to just to get it same day and noone else happens to have what i need autozone...
i find that the more you pay for the part ... usually you get better service...

yeah - they are a good online source for parts. and I have friends at some other places too . . . which is great when planning work
but when you are in the middle of a project on a sunday afternoon and slip and tear a ball joint boot you are kind of stuck with the local shops
the funny thing is they had boot kits in the aisles, we found them ourselves.
my car now has an SVT suspension on it. It was shockingly easy . . . the hardest part was using suicide sticks to put the front struts together . . . I hate those things, they creep me out . . . back of the focus has a more conventional shock and coil sprint arrangement that was gravy to do
