Title: The Bmi Challenge.
Chemical X - August 18, 2009 07:19 PM (GMT)
Okay so it sounds like the contest starts monday the 24th. And the name of the game is the BF or BMI reduction. The person with the most lost in percentage to their weight wins. It looks like the current entry is 20 bucks or approximately. The entry wont be needed until its done really. The current date to finish is april of next year. EMR dosnt have a date up yet but it spring castle is around that time.
Entry dosnt have to be 20 bucks cash, it can take the form of gear, parts, shirts whatever you think the winner may like that you have around or you could just throw cash into the pot.
Personally im putting up $20 to the winner.
So I challenge you to take my money.
--------------
The date will be finalized when EMR puts up the new schedule. (ending at spring castle)
Please post up with your current BMI/BF percentage and weight so we have numbers to work with at the end.

:D ... ill get my stuff entered tonight.
Im using sparkpeople.com to track my food and to log my fitness activities... IT's FREE!
TM I'll take your bet! Tonight ill do the 2 min of pushups for the pushup part of my workout. Just to see where im starting at. I doubt i even reach 50.
TrojanMan - August 18, 2009 08:01 PM (GMT)
I have absolutely no chance to win but I'll sweeten the pot.
One bottle of DFH's Honey Brown rum ($27 value last I checked) to the winner. I'd prefer delivery in person at Spring Castle but I'll mail it if you can't make it for whatever reason.
I'm 5'5" and I'll round up to 160lbs.
This site says that's a BMI of 26.6.
As a side bet, I just did 63 mil-spec pushups (90* bend at the elbows and then back up to straight for one rep, keep your back straight with legs) in two minutes - no getting out of position, all rests must be done with the back straight. I wager that I will be able to break 100 pushups by Spring Castle. I tried it once before but I never got out of the mid 90's. I can do it if I'm serious about it. No idea what the wager is, perhaps just keep it a gentleman's bet?
Brimstone - August 18, 2009 11:46 PM (GMT)

235 lbs 6'1 that site says i'm 31.0

You guys suck, where were you a couple of months ago?
I just went from 232 to 205. Meh, my goal was tto lose the weight not win some internet thingy. I am trying to cut down on sodium and make for a better balanced smaller diet (for life type thing, food zen maybe?).
I still have 10 lbs to go, wish me luck.
Is it ok to talk diet a little too?
Oh yeah, day 4 with no smokes. Again. Hopefully for good this time.

Good luck guys!

You could counteract that by getting a haircut and a shave to look more normal. :P
As it is, I think if you had the BMI of a coked-out Kate Moss you'd look like a cross between a hippie tree-sitter and one of those not-sure-if-pedophile homeless dudes that always hangs out near bus stations.
...
Alright, now I need the mind bleach...

No worries here, The vast amount of my weight loss is done with.
My previous high weight gave me a BMI of 35.5.
My real question is this though.
I know the displacement is about the best test but when that isnt available what else is there? I ask as I have used a tape and taken measurements that way and I get a different number, The scale here at the house gives me another different number, the machine at the gym gave me a very different number as well. Should I go by the lowest or the one from trojans post?
TrojanMan - August 19, 2009 07:36 PM (GMT)
A lot of exercise web forums use before & after pics with voting to determine a winner. I don't think that's practical here when we barely get 35 votes on a topic, nor do I really feel like posing for the internets, but just throwing that out there.
Bodyweight exercises in terms of reps/time (consecutive situps, pushups, pullups, etc.) are suitably objective but it certainly favors those individuals whose physiology is slanted in that direction. I just don't run very fast, for example. And besides, physical ability is not necessarily "fitness." There are also age issues to reconcile.
If I had to come up with something "fair," I'd use a standard mathematical formula with measurable constraints (height and weight, for example). True, it's going to "favor" those people with a lot of weight to lose in the first place but I think perhaps you could equalize it somehow.
Say we settle on a standard BMI calculation. Everyone has a before and after measurement. Subtract a "healthy" BMI from both numbers (say something in the low 20s) and you get the "excess BMI." Percentage difference in before and after gives you your score.
Example:
For a 6' tall male, 220 pounds is a BMI of 29.8 (using link in my above post).
If you lost 25 pounds (about 10%, which is very manageable in ~6 months), that would put you at 195lb. for a BMI of 26.4.
Subtract 23 from each number. Before: 6.8 After: 3.4
You lost 50% of your "excess" BMI (as opposed to the 11% of your initial gross).
Whoever drops the greatest percentage of excess wins.
That doesn't deal with bodyfat percentage which is arguably much more scientific but also much more difficult to test.
Just a suggestion.

I'll probably look a little fat on that calculation, because I'm out to build muscle, not just lose the beer belly.

Hey, don't worry about the BMI. That's just two measurements and isn't really a reliable metric of fitness.
I figure I could stand to get back in better shape is all. 5 years ago, I could do 20 pullups and nearly 100 pushups no problems. Now I'm at 8 to 10 and 60 to 70. I don't know how much weight I could really lose -I'll admit to maybe a few pounds :ph43r: - but I know I could stand to get my performance up a bit higher.
I have no hope of actually winning anything, but I'll chip in if it'll help out the cause, you know? I'm sure a lot of SCPers are in the "probably gain weight from building muscle" category but that's no reason not to participate. I don't do weights so I probably won't build any muscle mass, but I could sure use the conditioning.

I will play along whats the time frame here i wont be coming to EMR but I am 6.00 and 195 pounds with a BMI of 26.4.
sunfisher89 - August 22, 2009 09:45 PM (GMT)
I'm in. I know waiting till the last minute to join, but I was pretty sick this whole week.
I'm 6' 1'', 260 lbs. I have a scale that I just set up that does BMI and other cool things and it says I have a BMI of 30.4%. I'll be using this scale so that there is no discrepancies between the readings.
Siress - August 22, 2009 11:00 PM (GMT)
I would play along, but you guys have to measure this properly first. A muscular dude with 2% BF could have one of 50% based on such a rudimentary calculation as the posted "calculator." I vote for skin fold tests.
sunfisher89 - August 24, 2009 06:26 PM (GMT)
First day of the contest and I just wanted to let everyone know that Brimstone is officially going down. Admittedly I haven't done anything yet today except go to classes, but I am currently preparing what's for dinner. After the sun stops beating down so hard, Christine and I are headed for a bike ride.

I have many reservations concerning BMI and weight as markers of health. Really bugs me I have to use them as health indicators in my current research. I'd suggest keeping an eye on your blood pressure as well. However, as long as you take the numbers for what they're worth and are getting in shape for the sake of being healthy and feeling better, it's all good.
I'd play, but I'm a poor college kid who needs to gain weight for the upcoming seasons anyway.
Good luck to all.
TrojanMan - August 24, 2009 08:59 PM (GMT)
Just did 67 pushups...
I'll get this back. :bang:
As for blood pressure, I've been at 120/80 as long as I can remember. Of course, that gets thrown around a bit under the influence of caffeine or alcohol.
But being healthy is only part of it. There are levels of performance above just being healthy. I have been way too lazy the past couple of years and I need to get back in shape. I probably wouln't do it if there weren't a challenge involved so I'm running with you guys.
Of course, when it comes to running, most people can whip my arse. I'm blaming it on short legs.

You hit the nail on the head there. I tried sophomore year to do this, but I just lacked the drive to do it alone. Not to mention the fact that the commons was buffet style, so what they lacked in quality, I made up for in quantity.
ChaseBK - August 25, 2009 02:48 AM (GMT)
I was just speaking about the general population, healthy should be our goal. I agree with the whole being in superior shape thing though. I just find myself having to caution the people I work with (I study health psychology) to expect moderate gains and not get discouraged by the numbers.
Having SCP as a support system will increase the likely hood everyone who signs up will complete the programs they have set up for themselves. I attribute that as much to the support system as ya'll being stubborn SOBs btw.

awww crap i forgot to post ... i used the link.... sooooo
24.2
can i still play?
i have a lil somethin to throw in for the winner as well!
TrojanMan - October 19, 2009 09:01 PM (GMT)
Hey, are we still doing this? Anybody still running?
It just got done raining for 5 days straight and I'm gonna finally hit the pavement again tonight.
turbo chicken - October 27, 2009 05:29 AM (GMT)
i saw your post ... and started running again lol... didn't want to post until i had ran for a few day's
Siress - October 27, 2009 03:23 PM (GMT)
Something worth mentioning, BMI is slowly, unfortunately (as opposed to quickly), being replaced with Body Composition (or Body Fat %, really) by the World Heath Organization. BMI doesn't take into account muscle mass as opposed to fat mass; it's basically a cookie cutter that they claim everyone should be shaped like.
Also, from someone that lost 100+ lbs, mostly by running, I suggest you keep it under 3mi when you run, but focus more on sprinting. I lost a lot of muscle mass by just running, and it's a lot off work to gain it back without adding fat mass with it.
Most importantly, though, keep it up! (t) It took me along time to realize it was more embarrassing to not exercise than it was to do so in the condition I was in.
(Incidentally, I'm in a college health class right now and have slides for the topics of nutrition and fitness if they are of interest to anyone. Send me a pm with an email and I'll shoot them your way. One of them is actually quite funny, and I'll add some of the dialog from the prof. that made it even more so if I have time.)
Chemical X - December 10, 2009 04:17 AM (GMT)
Not making much progress.
having screwed up knees is really slowing me down.
I did find a fat chem pic. I think this was about my 235 mark so 20 pounds under my fattest known amount.

Its a double X shirt if it matters.
Brimstone - December 11, 2009 06:38 PM (GMT)
working in an office is killing me, cold is also preventing me from going outside. switched to lifting weights so ill see where it goes from there.
Chemical X - March 11, 2010 03:24 AM (GMT)
As far as that BMI scale shows im not doing so well. But while I haven't slimmed down much in terms of weight I am now taking in a few notches on my belt which is a definite improvement. Also my shirt are getting tighter in the shoulders/upper chest area. I am on my third routine since my first post in this thread, Its good to keep it mixed up as your body will get acclimated to a routine and slow metabolism some.
Also since I first posted in here I hurt my knees pretty bad playing on a supair field, Its definitely taken its toll on my weight loss. I am getting back to where I was previously. I should be able to do a full leg workout soon instead of just the leg press. And since I had my injury I stopped doing cardio all together, I have begun to reincorporate it again and have worked my time up from 5 minutes to 15, not a huge gain but I am working at it until my knees start to give out then I stop.
As for the new routine I am doing less weight but about twice as many reps, I have noticed alot more definition.
I believe I will be handing my 20 off to someone else, as the BMI chart that we are using is somewhat flawed. I am still healthier though and it is very much its own reward.

Brimmy, how are your efforts going?

ha i've gained weight lol...
