" Who would go to CC and not want to play?" (trojan)
A number of the pumpers at the pump v. semi castle. Still pissed about that.
crazyorigin - March 9, 2007 06:07 PM (GMT)
oh, ok, maybe it was sunday, i remember reading something in the printout they send you after pre-registering and it said something about a pump sidegame.
TrojanMan - March 9, 2007 06:36 PM (GMT)
Correct, it is Sunday.
Traditionally, open play is held Friday evening and Sunday of Castle weekends. It's basically just walk-on play and very informal.
Two years ago during fall Castle (I think?) an all-pump group decided that they had enough people to field their own playing group. We were just sitting around and someone mentioned that we had enough for an all-pump group and it just happened. Now, there's anywhere between 20 and 40 pumpers for a given Castle Sunday and we even have advertisements scattered around EMR (thanks, Blue!) telling people where/when to meet for all-pump games. If you're there you'll know what to do, don't worry.

CanCon started playing pump on the Sunday after Castle back in 97 or 98, though it didn't get popular until after the Marshall's joined in about 2000. Nowadays, most of the CanCon road trippers are too hung-over or otherwise worn out to play Sunday morning. We're all getting older. :P
I guess now it's an SCP-centred group.
I recall the first year it was just seven of us Canucks, plus Nancy Baker and her husband. We had some fun games in Hanse Hollow, and Hawaiian Punch's Playground (don't remember what it's called now - the one next to the rec centre).

I have yet to play in a pump only game :P

That was the Sunday of Pump Pandemonium 1.
The "someone" was an impatient CanCon, Bob Lohmaier.
At 9 a.m., we were kicking our heels in the parking lot, waiting on other players.
Many of these were still in bed, fast asleep.
The original idea was to play bush fields behind EMR's Rec Center.
Bob saw a perfectly good castle and 14 guys ready to play now.
This was vintage Bob.
We grabbed our ref and off we strolled to the castle gate.
Word was left at the Rec Center to direct stragglers up to Castle Aargh.
Latecomers filtered in throughout the morning.
By 11 a.m., we had over 24 players.
The courtyard became so crowded, we decreed the side ramparts in bounds.
The games remain among the most intense I've ever played.
One game, I found myself behind the other team's lines.
I hadn't moved.
They were so fixated on the fight ahead, the guys went right by me.
Concentrating on the fight in front of me, I missed them too!
This was the morning Drum took the now famous photo of I-Man and Titan Arresta squaring off.
If paintball was always like that morning, I'd never play anything else.

I'm really looking forward to both CC and the following Sunday I went down for my first castle last fall but the weather was so bad on sunday that I didn't play at all, we just left early

Yup, that's pretty much the whole backround story in a nutshell.
However, I wasn't squaring off against 'Apollo'...it was "Titan Arresta".
I've yet to duel with any Greek Gods... I did, once, go head to head with Vishnu...but that little bugger ran out of air...

My apologies to Titan Arresta.
Greek gods are forever plotting intrigue and changing sides.
Too damn confusing.
Hindu gods..bah!
They just keep reincarnating.
Toe to toe w/ Norse deities. That's the ticket.
Any Wotans out there for I-Man to battle? ;)

The Pump vs Semi Castle was truly one for the books. It was a blast, but next time, unless pumps are attacking, I won't be defending with one. That was the first (and last) time I've gotten stitched with 38 paintballs at close range.
