In Zelda;Links Awakening, I can't deafeat the boss who is defending BowWow. Do i just have to hack at him for 15-30 minutes or is there a speicial kill him?

Also In Link's Awakening, can you ever move those boulders that say "This too heavy, you won't be able to lift this with your bare hands" when you push/attack it? If so, How?
