Title: Broken Brake
Kid - April 14, 2005 10:28 PM (GMT)
Server died on me and I lost my giant post while it was posting. I'll skip the long parts and get to the main point.
If you ran a giant company of drones that got lucky on a game series that managed to still be popular many years later, but you no longer were making copies of it, would you care if the gaming company liked the game so much that the community at large started making updated versions on the PC that looked awesome? I don't think you or anyone would care, let alone disapprove, as it would generate interest in the company and cause a demand for the original versions. My guess to why some groups have gotten C&D threats, which would quite possibly be beatable during litigation due to Fair Use Act loopholes, and quit their projects, is that Square has something a lot more tangible then just having the Chrono Brake registration, that they're expecting to do well enough to generate interest in CT and CC again on it's own and don't want to miss that future revenue when people are making free and better versions of the old game.
ZeaLitY - April 15, 2005 01:30 PM (GMT)
The C&D order should be hailed as a good thing. It means SquareEnix does care about the Chrono series, which validates the possibility of Break more than any fan project could on its own.
Knives101 - April 15, 2005 07:51 PM (GMT)
 Thats a morbid way to look at it Zeal, but ya that may be right.
Though I think they were more just worried about someone using their copyrighted items.. not worried about CT specifaclly.
GalaxyFalcon - April 16, 2005 12:46 AM (GMT)
they quite possibly plan on continuing it in the future. But It it does not appear to be really top-priority.
WolfPack - April 16, 2005 06:20 PM (GMT)
Proof in that is it took them 5 years to make a crappy sequel. Its nearing 5 years since cross, never know what might happen...
GalaxyFalcon - April 16, 2005 09:09 PM (GMT)
i was actually goingt o mention that, is it possible, that they're waiting for 5 years? or maybe, 10 now? lol
WolfPack - April 16, 2005 11:46 PM (GMT)
Ya, no kidding, goig up in intgers of 5.
Knives101 - April 17, 2005 08:50 AM (GMT)
 another 5 yrs and they'll be able to beam games directly to our brains.
rpgfan3233 - April 17, 2005 02:51 PM (GMT)
Hmm... I don't like the way that sounds, Knives101.
It would be great to play a MMORPG with a Virtual Boy way of viewing the game. In fact, that kind of sounds like the stories of the .hack anime series...
Knives101 - April 17, 2005 08:28 PM (GMT)
 I was think'n more along the lines of what the riddler did in that batman movie.. ya know the one where the riddler was played by jim carry.
rpgfan3233 - April 17, 2005 08:46 PM (GMT)
I know, but that is sort of scary, if you think about it.
For example, if you were a soldier during a war between your country and another country and you were captured by the enemy, they could just beam instructions into your brain to destroy your own country. You would have to be killed if that happened. It would be the bloodiest war in any country's history.
Or on a smaller scale, teachers could brainwash you into doing ungodly things to them. :ph43r:
GalaxyFalcon - April 17, 2005 10:53 PM (GMT)
lol, ungodly is a mild way of saying it.
That would be freaky.
No way no matter how cool a game is, am i slaping a Tube into my head. nuh-uh
Knives101 - April 18, 2005 01:17 AM (GMT)
 I believe sony actually recently got a patent on a technology similar to this.. I read it somewhere I just don't remember where... probably Gamespot.
Bolshoi - April 18, 2005 06:41 AM (GMT)
Hey rpgfan, ya know they made a movie about that. Manchurean Project, or something. Made it long ago, than made a remake.
Well I, for one, am mad that SquareEnix doesn't respect fans of the series enough to let them work on a remake in their own time. I'd understand if it was stolen material that hadn't come out yet, but instead of making a remake themselves (if that is what they're doing) they need to come out with better games. They're current games suck! X-2...the most pointless game of all history, FFT Advanced...(little experience myself, but my friend had it) there were battles where you couldn't use physical or magical attacks (alledgedly). Try winning a game like that. seriously.
But yeah, the should concentrate more on making games than shutting down fan made games.
Stoney - April 18, 2005 10:21 PM (GMT)
Fact: Square/Enix needs money to create games.
Fact: CT is still one of the most highly-valued SNES games of all time (right up there with FF6) and collectors will pay a lot of money to get the SNES cartridges.
Fact: Square/Enix is still making money off of Final Fantasy Chronicles.
Fact: These sales mean more money for Square/Enix to create games with. They do not want to be denied this money.
Fact: Any attempt to use this game's characters, plot, etc. without Square/Enix's permission is viewed as an attempt to undermine the success this game is still garnering.
Fact: Square/Enix knows this is bad, because they know that people will play the Remake and possibly lose interest in the original game. This will deny them their precious, precious money.
Fact: Thus, Square/Enix will continue to hinder all remakes of their best-sellers (such as CT) from now until Armageddon, because they are viewed as a threat to the company's well-being.
Any questions?
Bolshoi - April 19, 2005 01:17 AM (GMT)
Do they really think a remake will make the original less popular? The original will always have a place in my preference book, the remake is just another way of looking at it, it'll never take the place of the original.
I got my copy of CT off of a ROM anyways :D
....though I might buy the cart when I get the money to waste
Knives101 - April 19, 2005 07:57 AM (GMT)
 well dispite everyones bitch'n I do like the PS version better, load times maybe frusrating at times, but it has a bunch of cool features, extras and Anime scenes.. which I like.. better.. ;)
Eh could hinder it, but its also a underground game so thats iffy.. and is also a mod, I doubt that more than 100,000 people have even visited the home site..
WolfPack - April 23, 2005 08:35 PM (GMT)
Any way to confirme that?
Knives101 - April 25, 2005 07:45 PM (GMT)
GalaxyFalcon - April 25, 2005 09:23 PM (GMT)
Well i think its fair to say.
look how many member we got, if 100,000 people had visited the home site, we'd have atleast 10,000 people doing :

My knowledge of the English language and mediocre knowledge of 1337 cannot translate that. I think it was intentional though...

Stoney - May 10, 2005 08:33 PM (GMT)
Hmm, interesting advert Marcel...it looks like that kid near the top ripped off Link's costume, though. Next thing you know, he'll probably be wearing a pointy green hat. :P
Marcel - May 11, 2005 09:58 AM (GMT)
Yeah, I think the reason he's looking so pissed off is probably because he couldn't get the hat!

Sorry to be Captain Cynicism, but it doesn't... not necessarily anyway.
All it says it that they want to protect their intellectual property.
Duranix - May 18, 2005 12:08 PM (GMT)
not that square actually is intellectual anyway.

I wouldn't say that.... I assure, it wasn't random :P
Duranix - May 24, 2005 09:33 PM (GMT)
yeah, wolfpacks right :P
i went spastic and started swearing everywere, and i bypassed the swearing filter about 3 - 5 times in each post....
lol... only teh mods saw it :)
i wouldnt hail the C&D as a good thing... although it means square MIGHT care for CT, it could also mean that they just dont want you to become famous and eventually compete with them.
