Hello everyone,
I and my sister are fans of "Chrono Trigger" (my sister wants to make a Chrono movie and play Princess Nadia  ), and have felt for a long time that it should be remade as a modern game. Hence our excitement when I found out about the Remake project.
As far as I can see, you guys/gals are doing a beautiful job :) , but I have just one bone to pick. I was listening to the remade sound-tracks and was pleased with most of what I heard, but I'm afraid the "Undersea Palace" track just does not sound right. Please let me explain:
Plot review: Chrono and company have just recieved a red knife (aka the Masamune) from Melchior, who has implored them to go to the undersea palace and use the knife to destroy the mammon machine before it can be activated. The soundtrack in question is played in the background as they race against time to destroy the machine before Lavos is awakened, and all comes to ruin.
Analasis: In the orriginal Super-NES game, the undersea palace music is made to give a feel of urgency, followed by a feeling of awe and wonder for the magnificent palace and the overwhelming power of the mammon machine (followed again by urgency as we are switching between Chrono's trio and the hall of the machine).
The first feel is provided for by the quick, high notes at the that appear during various sections of the piece, as well as a rise in key partway through. In order for this effect to be retained, the notes mentioned must come in rapid succession and dominate other sounds while they are playing.
The second feel is provided for by most everything else in the piece, including another rise in key before the one previously mentioned.
The feeling of awe has been well maintained, but the piece has been slowed down slightly, causing the high notes mentioned to be too slow for the feeling of urgency to work. The use of piano for these notes was also, I believe, an ill choice. They need to sound more like the technological wonder that the palace is supposed to be. Perhaps a more synthetic sounding instrument...
Conclusion: I don't mean to be a stick-in-the-mud, but I think the Palace track needs to be redone.
Please listen to the old track (If you have access to it or can play the game) and then listen to the new track. Then vote. I would like to see if others agree, or if the problem is just me.
