Title: I drew a new picture. ^^
Description: Er--a model sheet...

Celera - January 17, 2005 09:10 PM (GMT)
Well, this is a picture of the main character from my game. ^^ This was done to be a model sheet for Almighty Gir. ^^ Anyways, this is uncolored for now. I'll post the colored one when it's done.

user posted image

It's not perfect, but I get to fix all the errors in it when I make the colored version. ^^ Fun fun. ^__^

Shiryuu - January 17, 2005 09:13 PM (GMT)
Interesting!

Did you use a scanner to get the picture into the com?

You get the story all laid out?

Celera - January 17, 2005 10:09 PM (GMT)
Thanks!

Used a scanner. ^___^

Yeah, I have the story worked out for the most part. I'm still in the middle of filling out the small details, but it's already pretty long. ^^;;

Almighty_Gir - January 17, 2005 10:40 PM (GMT)
hawtness

*me humps*

^_^ thanks very much celera, as soon as i get done with *hahaha you think im gonna tell you?* for CTRP ill get it done :)

Chuckles - January 17, 2005 10:42 PM (GMT)
XD Gir, but I prefer the classic, "If I tell you, I'll have to kill you." line..

Shiryuu - January 17, 2005 11:14 PM (GMT)
Any chance of a sneak preview on the story, title etc...?

Celera - January 17, 2005 11:22 PM (GMT)
Title of the game is Dark Vortex: Rift Saga. ^^ Uh, if you guys are interested, here's the link to our forums... It's also in my banner. The topic there has most of the info on the game, as well as a bunch of pictures and sprites and stuff. ^^

Shiryuu - January 17, 2005 11:52 PM (GMT)
Wow, you actually got your own team!

I'm totally impressed.

Aleda looks cute btw ;)

Celera - January 17, 2005 11:59 PM (GMT)
Thanks! ^___^ Our team isn't doing really well at present though--our programmer just got drafted into the army. O___O Also, progress has been lacking lately, so I'm in the process of considering moving the project somewhere else. I'm going to finish it, though, if it's the last thing I do. ^____~

Moogle Man - January 18, 2005 12:22 AM (GMT)
Wooo, looks like your project is going along nicely, or at least was going along :P.
Heh, I'd like help you out in my free time but all I do is draw people, that and this whole CTRP thingy. :P

Knives101 - January 18, 2005 09:27 AM (GMT)
 Whoa.... thats some top notch stuff there. Great work Celera hope to see more.

Shiryuu - January 18, 2005 09:38 AM (GMT)
I think the CTRP team should consider this as their next mod project.

Almighty_Gir - January 18, 2005 09:56 AM (GMT)
well, its not a mod, its something completely different.

Shiryuu - January 18, 2005 10:00 AM (GMT)
I know it's old school RPG playing. Anyway, it's just a suggestion.

TheBrain - January 18, 2005 02:18 PM (GMT)
Nice job!
Wonderfull drawings!

Aleda looks cute btw ;)

*feels ashamed for secretly thinking the same thing*

Not much to say except that your style is awesome and I love it. Great job, Celera.

Celera - January 18, 2005 08:39 PM (GMT)
Thanks, everyone! ^__^

It's not totally old school, though. The battle system is something different than what you see with FF and other old school RPGs, mostly because I didn't wanna copy. The only truely old school elements in it are the 2D graphics, so if we were to go 3D, it'd be more new school. A long time ago, we were using really big sprites, and it looked kind of Grandia-esque, but not as pretty. These smaller sprites are easier for me to do on my own, which is why we switched. O__O We're having a problem finding someone reliable to make our background and object chips though, which is why there's only one screenshot... Apparently 2D pixel artists are hard to find. O__O

But... I'll finish it, if it's the last thing I do. ^____~

BrownMan - January 18, 2005 11:09 PM (GMT)
awesome pics celera. wish i was that good :( .

 nice!

Shiryuu - January 19, 2005 09:26 AM (GMT)
Is your battle system done? Any screenies?

Celera - January 19, 2005 06:50 PM (GMT)
Unfortunately, no. The battle system is still in the planning stage. ~___~ I know exactly how the mechanics of it would run, but my programmers still haven't gotten around to programming it. Maybe I could make some mockups...

Shiryuu - January 19, 2005 08:55 PM (GMT)
The team is using Visual C++ or just C++?

Chuckles - January 19, 2005 08:57 PM (GMT)
Isn't Visual C++ just an environment for coding that has been made user-friendly?

BrownMan - January 19, 2005 09:03 PM (GMT)
Visual C + +?
wait I thought this was a rpgmaker game

Shiryuu - January 19, 2005 10:32 PM (GMT)
Saw the site, says its coded in C++.

Celera - January 19, 2005 11:06 PM (GMT)
It's C++. They want to code it from scratch. ^^ Originally, I was just making it as an RPGmaker game, but it sort of grew up. O__O Of course, it'd be faster to use RM2K. ^^;;

Soul Eater - January 20, 2005 03:09 AM (GMT)
Holy cow.... If they are really planning to make that from scratch.... it will take a really loooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooong time! The programers must be really good to wanna try to pull off something like that O_o. They say RPGs are one of the hardest to code from scratch and programers would need at least 4 or 5 years experience to start making a good RPG.

You must have some good company Celera!

Shiryuu - January 20, 2005 05:53 AM (GMT)
RPGmaker XP allows flexibility of programming a battle system. Post a topic on it.
But they using Ruby, sort of a new language. Are you a programmer too Celera, or are you just doing artwork?

I'm also curious about programming a battle system too. Do they need all the sprites animation and maps to program it? Or can they just program a conceptual battle system, then replace the file names with the artwork sprites intended?

Soul Eater - January 20, 2005 06:07 AM (GMT)
I believe they can program the engine without the art and then place in the artworks later once they are done. So.... no they don't need all the artworks finished.

Celera - January 20, 2005 06:53 AM (GMT)
Nope, I'm not a programmer. Just an artist, and a writer. I do the concepts, then my team does the programming. I also work with a musician named Deluge, who's really good at putting the right music to my words. ^^

The battle system is purely conceptual right now. I have a lot of cool ideas for original weapons and such, but my team is... Slow, at best. Whenever I bring up the battle system, they say to wait for the engine, which I've been doing for over a year and a half now. I mean, I know they take a long time to work on, but I haven't seen much in the way of updates during that time. O__O On top of that, the pieces of the artwork for the game that I can't handle, such as the extra sprites, background tiles, and effects, haven't been completed because the other artists that have joined up with our team either vanish or quit. I'd gladly do it myself, but it's just a lot. So far I've finished hundreds of sprites, but I'm still not a good enough pixel artist to handle tiles. I wish I could say that we had more done, and that I had more than concepts... But as a designer, that's all I can do until I find programmers willing to work. My team was awesome in the beginning, but lately they go AWOL for weeks at a time, and only give minimal feedback when I post in the forums. And we have had plans for a website for a year and a half now too, and that hasn't gotten done either. Last I heard, they were putting it together, but now when I bring it up they go silent. I guess lack of communication is killing us--if I ever make another team, I'll make sure that everyone stays in contact, and enforce my rules better. I guess I'm not much of a leader... That's part of the reason why I'm here, and I wanted to be on this team. You guys have screenshots, and are making progress... And I just want to work on a game so badly. Chains is the first person I've been in contact with who's actually finished something, and I hope the same from you guys. ^^ Not that I'm giving up on my project--quite the contrary. Everyday I come up with new things to add in, and it grows. Besides--maybe if I can get the storyboard completely done, I can form a team that'll work. ^^;; Besides, I never give up. I know I'm onto something, and as long as I stay with it, it'll get done eventually. Nothing dies as long as it's not forgotten.

Heh--and Soul Eater, you're right. I've been doing this for about five years now, and only now do I feel like I'm good enough to even attempt an RPG. ^^;; As for the programmers--I can't say. I think they could do it if they applied themselves. Heh... I've come to hate computer games because they distract everyone. Ironic that I want to make one.

Soul Eater - January 20, 2005 07:54 AM (GMT)
Well, hey, since the programers are kinda keeping silent and won't respond they may have been trying to avoid you <_< . Since you practically did all the artwork and story planning all you really need now is a good game engine and systems to plug the story and the tiles in (once they are done) so I suggest maybe, to get things rolling, you might try RPG2K3 or XP just to get something workable, like a demo, out. This way you get to see your game in action and kinda not have to depend on the programers, who seems, no offense, have given up or have been really irresponsible.

Celera - January 20, 2005 08:08 AM (GMT)
Heh--you're probably right.

Only sucky thing is that RPGmaker2003 is... Well... So far as the battle system goes, a little buggy. I haven't tried XP, though.

Soul Eater - January 20, 2005 08:12 AM (GMT)
*Have never tried XP either* Hmmmm 2003 :S I'm not sure how bad it is... I've used it for a little while but never really done much, it looks ok ok but it's the first RPGMaker that allows for FF style battle systems so I guess it has to be a little buggy :D

Celera - January 20, 2005 08:15 AM (GMT)
Yeah. It was nice looking, but the ATB runs kind of funny. I tried it out a while ago. Also, it's a pain to make battle sprites for, because of all the size and frame number limitations... ^__^;; I'd still like to remain custom if possible, though, since I would like to attempt the systems I have in mind. But I guess if I finish the storyboard and can't find anyone, I'll have to settle on RPGmaker for a little while.

Soul Eater - January 20, 2005 08:19 AM (GMT)
Yeah... I think they limit you to 3 frames per an action = = and they kinda used the same ones for all types of weapons (SMACK WITH A BOW I SAY!!!) I believe they also limit the amount of colors... not sure how many, but you can't have over like 100 colors in one sprite set.

Shiryuu - January 20, 2005 10:48 AM (GMT)
XP can do alot if you know Ruby programming. I heard White Ties, a game made out using RPGmaker XP has a script on FF style battle system, but requires ripping and modification skills. Check out the topic I posted in the General, Town Forum

Anyway Celera, I can gladly help you out a little if you have sprites that need to be done. Well, for at least 1 month more coz I will be in the Army soon. Asia has a good practise for conscription <_<

Marcel - January 20, 2005 12:22 PM (GMT)
Wow celera, this RPG concept of yours looks really good! I really like the concept for the battle-system (do I smell a bit of CC inluence there?), and the art so far looks great. I haven't really gotten to reading the story yet (time, precious time, where have you gone to?), so I hope it will be equally impressive when I get to reading it.

Keep up the good work!!!

ps. Why is everyone suddenly joining the army?

Shiryuu - January 20, 2005 02:02 PM (GMT)
It's not a choice. It's conscription.

Almighty_Gir - January 20, 2005 02:45 PM (GMT)
basically, some iraqi's have taken an archbishop of the vatican as hostage. now, everyone knows that america wont step down to the demands of terrorists, so its likely the bishop will be executed. so now, everyones joining up to prepare themself for the holy crusade which the pope is likely to launch...

its been 700 years, id say were overdue on a holy crusade! ive got my broadsword and plate mail ready, how bout you?!

Soul Eater - January 20, 2005 04:01 PM (GMT)
I'm readying my Mage Robe and Wizard Hat, hopefully I won't need to use it, but I'm reading on teleportation spells, I'll be out of battle before you can even say "COME BACK HERE AND FIGHT LIKE A MAN!!!" B)

Chuckles - January 20, 2005 08:24 PM (GMT)
Broadsword? Everyone knows that broadswords are for sissies!
