Title: The masamune
Description: the design on it..
Epsonite - January 12, 2005 03:46 PM (GMT)
OK something came to my attention when i saw the masamune.... it doesnt look like the holy sword...it looks like a basic long sword i.m.o ...
Just a though umm maybe you should give it some aura around it or something or add a big gem of some sort on the handle...
Almighty_Gir - January 12, 2005 05:01 PM (GMT)
technically, if your interested to know.
masamune is not a sword, masamune is a man, a creator of fine weapons. if you own a masamune, your either extremely rich, or your an amazing swordsman.
there is a legend stating that there are two craftsmen, masamune, and murumasa, masamune, never raised a hand in anger, and tempered his blades with love, while murumasa, was short tempered, and forged his blades with fire, and anger.
if you lay a masamune blade in a river, no leaf shal split on its edge, as diamond sharp as it is.
however, a murumasa, will never be drawn without bloodshed.
little japanese legend for you :P
as far as game terms go, theres been way too many swords called masamune, and they all look different. take sephiroth for example. it s a huwouge katana.
Epsonite - January 12, 2005 07:15 PM (GMT)
ok then... i cant really respond to that XD
thanks...itd still be nice if tehre was a jewel
TheBrain - January 12, 2005 07:57 PM (GMT)
In CT the Grandleon sword aka Masamune looks like that, normal Longsword, no jewels.
Chuckles - January 12, 2005 09:46 PM (GMT)
Gir, did you know that I love you?
(Thanks for that info! I study religion, mythology, and war for the most part, but have never really learned much about the Japanese and all...)

thats true...ok i guess im done...but wait ...the evil masamune...that was from CC isnt this based on CT?
Knives101 - January 13, 2005 10:23 AM (GMT)
 That was a very interesting myth gir.
Well though I think the sword should look the same, when you power it up it might be cool to see a white or blue glow to it, maybe a glowing symbol on it or something... maybe. ;)
Marcel - January 13, 2005 01:33 PM (GMT)
.. I always thought it was murasama, not muramasa?
Almighty_Gir - January 13, 2005 02:00 PM (GMT)
nope, and on some research ive found my story was a little off.
The reason for the aforementioned leaf-cutting abilities of the Masamune and Muramasa blades might be as follows (although the actual name of the smith was Muramasa, Bakin was notorious for renaming famous people in the Hakkenden and sneaking them in):
Masamune was great swordsmith in Japan, and a well-known philosopher I believe. His works with the blade were so masterful his student Muramasa wishes to recreate his work, but failed due to shortcomings on the most important martial princicple.
In the Japanese bujutsu there is a saying: satsujinken katsujinken. Roughly translated this means 'The sword that kills, the sword that gives life'. This principle donates the entire word martial (bu, or 'stop the spear') in that a martial artists goal is to preserve life with his skill, never to take it.
Masamune knew this, but Muramasa did not. For this reason he did not have the insight on the blade as his teacher did, and could therefore never accomplish the same skill in his own work.
Because he assumed the blade was for death alone, his swordwork as always been pulled to the satsujinken side of the equation, his blades always wanting blood and never serving their true identity.
The above could denote why the Muramasa is deemed 'cursed'.

That legend was friggin' sweet. I really enjoyed reading it!
As for in the game, I'm guessing we'll jazz up the Masamune a little bit. Our other weapons that have been done but not shown, like the Red Katana, have been greatly improved from their plain sprite originals.

YAY...thank you!
Knives101 - January 14, 2005 10:04 AM (GMT)
 thats some real deep stuff Gir.
Gald you guys have something planned for the sword. Hope it nocks my socks off. Oh and I finally got a new pc and ut2k4 so I can play it when it comes out, so yippy for me.
NeverB4Seen - January 19, 2005 12:50 AM (GMT)
That was really cool Gir, how do you know so much about Japanese legends? Tell us more! hehe
Masamune seems like a regular sword to me. Besides the engraving of Melchiors name in the blade it should look original. It's the wilder that makes it so special in my opinion. Those the wield it show it's true power like when Glenn (Frog) took the sword and used it to cut the Magic Mountain in half. Crazy.
Soul Eater - January 19, 2005 06:26 AM (GMT)
Squaresoft (before Square Enix) have used this sword for quite a long time. You can kind of link the legends of the Masamune to the FinalFantasy VII version that Sephiroth weilded.
I'm not sure if it was intensional but when
SPOILER ALERT!!!
Aris dies, Sephiroth's sword did not make Aris bleed (it might have been because of censorship purpose but who knows). This "could" show the concept of the philosophy of Masamune when he creates his sword, not to distroy life, but to preserve it. The sword did not draw blood.
NeverB4Seen - January 20, 2005 04:01 AM (GMT)
my guess is they wanted to keep the rating Teen and not Mature. But I understand what your saying, that makes sence to me <_<
WolfPack - January 29, 2005 03:32 AM (GMT)
Actually guys, i think gir is right. I seem to remember hearing something about masamune being a person.
Almighty_Gir - January 29, 2005 01:29 PM (GMT)
as a point. being the FF7 addict that i am, and ive completed the game (and counted as much) 48 times (i know, i suck  )
sephiroth wasnt inherently evil, the genova cells implanted in him while during his foetal stage of development, caused part of his brain to be controlled by jenova, she made him believe she was his mother, when in fact, his mother was lucrecia, professor hojo's wife. and professor hojo is his father.
sephiroth, through the whole game has been seen as not having any real malice, and not even showing any real evil nature as such, and is always calm... this might show why he is the only person able to use that sword.
as another point, cloud can use a sword in the game called the murumasa, which is fitting, since cloud has only hatred and resentment of sephiroth, and also the strong will he once had to be just like sephiroth (kinda ties in with murumasa wanting to make great swords like masamune, his master, maybe?)
i dunno...just a theory :P
Chuckles - January 29, 2005 02:41 PM (GMT)
Never thought of it that way...
Knives101 - January 29, 2005 04:29 PM (GMT)
 Ya know dispite not showing any malice or hatred, I don't think killing people for no reason makes him a good guy. And aren't the bad guys always the ones to grow up and listen to there parents.
Almighty_Gir - January 29, 2005 04:41 PM (GMT)
actually, the sephiroth you follow around is a clone. the real sephiroth is trapped in the northern crater, after cloud "killed" him in the nibelheim reactor, throwing him into the mako stream, he was carried to the northern crater.
all his clones were being controlled by jenova.

Gahh. Your ruining it for me! I never made it past the races!
Curse xp....

WolfPack - January 29, 2005 10:10 PM (GMT)
Well, the only version i ever was able to get ahold of was a crack. So aid and patches won't help me :D ;) :D
Although, i'll be more than willing to take an iso if anyones got one :D
Chuckles - January 29, 2005 10:11 PM (GMT)
1) Patch it.
2) Re-crack it with a crack for the version you update it to.
WolfPack - January 29, 2005 11:13 PM (GMT)
Well, its not just a crack, its a rip. No movies, no sound, no nothing.

Galidan - January 30, 2005 08:08 PM (GMT)
Because alot of Americans have a thing for buying pretty stuff. I'm sure that McDonalds could create an even greater obesity surge by rolling their burger wrappers in glitter.
BTW, what DOES the UK version look like?

Hey. I was browsing the web and had to make an account here just to say something. ALMIGHTY_GIR... about Masamune and Muramasa, that is only a legend and nothing more. Masamune lived about 200 years b4 Muramasa, so realistically, they never even met. Just thought i'd let you know. ^_^
