Title: Cell Shading Graphics
Description: For CT Remake???
kamuijr - January 5, 2005 02:13 PM (GMT)
Well I think that the game should have the cell shade look since the character designs are based on DBZ fame work of Akira Toriyama.

I'm not sure if we can do cell shading... cuz that will defeat the purpose of making it 3D... sure 3D models can be rendered in Ink and Paint to give a cell shading feel... but usually cell shadings are 2D and might be (don't recall) animated frame by frame.
I'm not sure if the team is willing to change the models and stuff. (Not sure, also, whether the Unreal script support this.)

Cel shading is a method of rendering that makes the game looks like it has been shaded cartoon-style.
They use cel shading for a lot of the new-gen games.
Examples of this are:
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker
Sly Cooper
Viewtiful Joe
Dark cloud 2
Tales of Symphonia
And others...
Cel shading would look cool - although maybe only on the characters.
It's a matter the team will have to discuss.

I remember a guy made a mod for halo that made everything cellshaded. all he had to do was use a filter through photoshop on all the textures in the game
Alezunde - January 5, 2005 08:07 PM (GMT)
That gives it a cel-shaded effect, but it's not cel shading.
Cel-shading is adding cartoonish shadows and highlights in general in real-time.

I personally love Cel-Shading. Looks awesome. And a tip: More question marks don't make it more of a question :P

Cel-shading is a graphic filter, like Al said. You can see it showcased very effectively in games like Sly 2: Band of Thieves and Jet Grind Radio.
With the Unreal engine, to my knowledge, it is impossible to do true cel-shading without modifying the core .dll's, which of course is illegal unless you pay thousands to license the engine. You can do the texture thing like Brown said, and it has been used to great effect in certain levels I have seen for UT2004. However, it has some notable limitations, especially considering that playing the game with lower texture details (for better performance) will make the lines look much less sharp and therefore very ugly.

Yea well the game looks just fine the way it is so I just wanted to see yall opinion on the matter.
Also good statement peeps.

Galidan - January 12, 2005 06:21 AM (GMT)
I've gotta say that looks pretty freaking awesome.

WolfPack - January 15, 2005 11:12 PM (GMT)
Blah.... I hate cell shading ~_~. It made windwaker look horrible!
Galidan - January 16, 2005 04:21 AM (GMT)
No way! Cel Shading can make games look excellent. And Wind Waker looked fine.

In my opinion, cel-shading is the WORST idea for this game. It would look bad and also it would destroy the work of Akira Toriyama, because you guys say you dont want to make anything that is going to put shame to Chrono Trigger, well if its cel-shaded its going to bring shame to it. It looks bad in my opinion for wind waker. Cel-shaded gives it a "kiddish" look. And for this game it would just look Horride. Well thats my two cents (im new :D ).

o_O you realise of course that toriyama was in fact, an anime artist, and his work was in fact, CEL SHADED! how can it "destroy" his work, if its the way he worked anyway?
as for making things look bad. if its done right, then it looks great. wind waker looked bad because EVERYTHING had that cartoony feel, even the smoke clouds. whereas there are a lot of other cel shaded titles that use partial cel shading, and it looks great.
WolfPack - January 17, 2005 02:44 AM (GMT)
Toriyama's style was anime. Anime is not cell shaded, at least not the pure strain or anything i've seen. Cell shading is also, in my opinion, bad for games. It's also not what was orginally used in Chrono Trigger, and thus should not be used.

I think you're a little bit confused Wolfpack, Cell Shading is one of the widest used methods of painting the characters Cells for animation. 99% of them use cell-shading because is much less expensive to animate the entire episode instead of doing how it was done in the past.
Akira Toriyama has both works (still images) painted in cell-shading and using other methods, like crayons, pencils, etc...
Unless i'm confusing myself...
Darktiminator - January 24, 2005 10:42 PM (GMT)
Well, I wouldn't be surprised if those methods were used In the making of the video clips in the playstation version.
BrownMan - January 24, 2005 11:03 PM (GMT)
i like cel shaded games. they bring out a whole nwe different perspective of games.
Lucid - January 25, 2005 05:59 AM (GMT)
Windwaker's Cel Shading was EXCELLENT. I thought the visuals were done as best as they could've been for the game.
However, Chrono Trigger wouldn't look good if it were Cel-Shaded. Chrono Trigger is a great game. As such, it requires a level of detail that Cel-Shading can not offer.
Side Note: I want to see an Illusion of Gaia remake. My second favorite SNES game.
WolfPack - January 29, 2005 03:59 AM (GMT)
I dunno, maybe i am confussed. I just know that windwaker looked ugly.

Dragon Quest VIII, one of the highest selling games this generation(in Japan) uses cel-shading because it actually stays more true to the artwork and design of Akira Toriyama.
Cel-shading doesn't make a game look "kiddy" (I hate that word); Zelda Wind Waker looked exactly how it was intended to, because Miyamoto wanted it to.
Cel-shading is a wonderful art style, and makes games look wonderful if used correctly, like how it was used in Tales of Symphonia.
Creiz - February 4, 2005 05:24 PM (GMT)
Cel Shading Roccs
And yes, it was cel-shading on the CT anime on the playstation 1.
btw, rendering model in ink-n-paint at like 30 itirations would look VERY cool
I dont think you should cel-shade CT:R
