Title: (FAQ)Frequently Asked Questions
Description: BEFORE YOU POST ANYTHING (UPDATED)

Knives - November 8, 2004 02:48 AM (GMT)
Okay, we get a whole lot of similar topics here in the Forums that really just waste space for the stuff that matters. Here is a list of frequently asked questions and some subsequent answers (it's a long read):

Last updated 5/1/05 by Knives

1. What the heck is this?
CTRP is a remake of Chrono Trigger in 3D, distributed as a free mod for the PC. The game will not come out for consoles. For more info, check the "About" tab on the main site, www.chrono-trigger.com.

2. What engine are you guys using?
We are using a free version of Unreal Engine 2.0, included with Unreal Tournament 2004. This means you will need UT2004 (or possibly 2003) in order to play CTRP when it comes out. Because of this, the minimum system requirements will reflect those of Unreal, which are: Pentium III 800, 256 MB Ram, 32 MB AGP Graphics Card, and Direct X 9.0b. However, due to how graphically intense some sections of the game may be, it may be quite difficult to run the game on the minimum settings. We can promise we will try our best.

3. You guys adding any new stuff?
Yes, but we are going to finish the important stuff first, meaing the original content of CT. We are probably going to add new side quests and an online co-op mode of some sort. But before all that a demo will be released so you can give your input about what we should change.

4. OMG d00d CTRP IS TEH PWN!!!!11shift+1!!! When can I play it?
Expected release dates are:
Demo: Maybe it's better to say when its done, we'll try to have it before 2005 ending :P.
First Full Release: We're aiming for next year. However, it will be done whenever its done, like Duke Nukem Forever. Unlike DNF, however, CTRP will be done. :P

5. Do you guys have permission from SquareEnix? CTR got shut down...yadda yadda yadda...
No. We don't. However, if SE tells us to stop, then we will stop. Period. We don't have the money, time, or legal resources to fight that.

6. I am skilled at (insert program here) and want to help. How can I?
Click Here. Thanks for the offer, we appreciate it.

7. Will there be voice acting?
We have not ruled out the possibility of having voice acting. However, it is not very likely this will happen for a number of reasons (finding the right voices, lack of decent equipment, the huge increase in file size...etc.)

8. Will the cutscenes be FMV (Final Fantasy VII-IX) or real-time (FFX, Zelda)?
Real time, made with Unreal's built-in cinematic editor. We plan to give CTRP a really great cinematic feel to already enhance its awesome story.

9. I'm sick of waiting for updates! I wanna' know what's going on!
Impatient fan, click here to see what the team is doing. It is regularly updated by most team members, but sometimes we get a little behind. Be patient with us :D

10. I really want to help, but I can't draw and I have no experience! Could I donate money?
No. Due to the nature of this mod we cannot accept monetary donations of any kind, and honsestly, we don't really need them. If you still want to help, you can find information on where to get and tutorials for the programs we use here.

11. Will you have your own programmer's ending?
It is possible. Since we will have the option to play the game with new stuff, and it would be quite amusing, we probably will have our own programmer's ending in this mode.

12. Is CTRP a FPS (First Person Shooter)?
If it was a FPS it wasn't a remake, so it's the original game in 3D.
Check first question and the "About" tab on the main site, www.chrono-trigger.com.

13. Ooh, maybe you guys could merge with the old CTR team to form a game of ridiculous ubernocity!
Ummm...no. Cool as it would be, we both have very different visions about how to create the CT world in 3D. Plus, since they have been shut down, why would they want to merge with the project that could be next on SE's hit list? Not only that, but the team has moved on to making original games now...so I doubt they would want to spend their time with a mod like us.

14. Will I have to pay to play this?
The game will be free and it will always stay free, we won't sell the game for many reasons being the first and most important ones:
1)We don't own Chrono Trigger, and we wouln't ever sell a game that isn't ours and was made by a hardworking, awesome team.
2)We don't have enough experience to sell something we made.
3)This is a non-profit fanmade project, we don't intent to do any harm to Square or any of their affiliates, consider this project like a fanfic or an artwork, but somewhat more elaborate.
4)We will try to keep the CT spirit alive to old and new players, we'll try to do a tribute to the CT world.
Thats it...
Any content of the site will always be free.

15. After CTRP, what are your plans for your next project?
All under wraps at the moment. We have some foundations laid for an original game, but nothing that's really solid.

16. Will there be cel-shading?
Highly, highly, with about 99% probability, there will be no cel-shading. Only with a fully licensed copy of the Unreal Engine, which costs an enormous amount of money, is true cel-shading possible. If we "faked" it using a popular technique, it looks perfect on high-end computers, but on an average machine it looks terrible.

17. What operating systems will CTRP be compatible with?
It will work with Windows 98/2000/NT/ME/XP, Linux/Unix, and Mac OS X. However, with other OSes besides windows you may need to manually install the game from a zipped or rarred version we will also release.

18. What if you guys changed the names of the Characters and Trademarked material?
That seems a fine idea, but legally doesn't stand a chance if it's proven that it was a blatant copy just with some differences... Furthermore probably people would change back the names and redistribute.
Also, our mod is suposed to be a tribute, it's suposed not to degrade the Chrono Trigger name.

19. Why you guys won't ask SE permission to do a non-comercial, fan made tribute?
Usually companies like SE don't openly endorse any type of fan made stuff.
Asking them directly through the improper usual channels would make us receive the standard letter that is sent by the PR's telling to not create absolutelly nothing related to any game.
Or they wouldn't send anything so that they can always send us a C&D later.

20. What will the in-game camera in CTRP be like?
Ever played Final Fantasy 10 for the PlayStation 2? That's what our camera will be like. It changes by itself depending on the situation for the greatest ease of play and cinematic flair. Due to the 3D nature of the game, however, we also plan to include a first-person view mode that will let you look around your environment easier.

21. How will the game be controlled?
Any way you like. In Unreal you can easily change control settings so you can map the commands to any button. It will, by default, be something simple, like move with WASD, etc. The first person mode will be triggered with a different button and controlled by the mouse. There will be full support for gamepads and joysticks, including force-feedback.

22. Will you have to "unlock" things for multiplayer?
Interesting idea, but not right now. This could create problems for less talented players as they would have to unlock all the stuff to play online. And we want CTRP to feel like fun, not like work. So currently, all multiplayer options will be available by default.

23. Why hasn't SE shut you down yet?
There are many possible reasons. A common mistake is that CT:R was selling their game and we aren't. This is false of course, neither CTRP or CTR were/is going to be sold. The console versions were for the developers personal enjoyment. Also since we are a mod our audience is significantly lower than CTR's, plus we haven't even had close to the amount of exposure they have. That may change soon...:D

Thank you and enjoy your stay here on the CTRP forums!

Much regards,
The CTRP Team

Also - everyone on the team loves getting encouraging emails or PMs from CT fans!
(Especially Brain... since he works harder than any of us!)

hey, i was just thinking...

when you guys release the demo, i could release a patch that adds in voices...

Apocalypse - December 22, 2004 11:53 PM (GMT)
Completely random comment that need not be added... *sigh...* <_<

I think it was a good move to release this, but I doubt the NOOB people will stop asking these questions. Good to hear you plan the demo before the New Year... i'd really like to try it. If that is the case, I suppose the demo will be release quite soon. If you are to do that, I suggest you get all the system specs ready by the release of the demo.

For a moment I almost had a stroke...
We are in 2004... the ending of 2005 is before the next new year, not this one!

Just wondering, how much does UT2k4 cost? I dont have it and hadn't planned on buying it.. but if it will be needed to play CTRP then I will probably buy it once you guys are finished just to play this..

$49.95 Australian.

but when you buy it, make sure that you get the ECE (editors choice edition). It has more and better stuff in it.

TheBrain - December 23, 2004 10:16 PM (GMT)
And make sure you only buy after we have something playable!
Unless you like ut2k4...

Duranix - December 23, 2004 10:21 PM (GMT)
lol

UT2K4 is awsome!!

i WAS 300th in australia, but i stopped playing.

...erm... oops!

Sorry about that Brain! I suppose it would be REALLY bad to cause the Team Leader's demise. I'll try not to get over-anxious. I misinterpreted. Take your time guys, as the more time taken... will lead to a better remake in the end. B)

I have a question for anyone on the team. As you probably know, Unreal Tournament 2004 is for Mac OS X (and Linux PCs but I can't really speak for them) as well as Windows PCs, so I was wondering if there are any plans to make this Remake Project work on Macs. I know that us Mac users are only a very small portion of the computer market but I also know a few Mac websites that would definitely post a story on the Chrono Trigger Remake Project and probably generate a lot of Mac user interest to make your fan base larger. I don't know how to do mods in Unreal Tournament 2004 nor do I model so I really don't have a clue how hard it is to do something like you guys are doing so maybe my request is unreasonable but I do know that I would really love to be able to play this without buying a new computer to do it. If you need help testing it on a Mac, I'd be glad to help (but I doubt that is one of your problems). As an encouragement, The Project looks amazing so far and I can really tell you guys are doing your best to make a mod worthy of the Chrono Trigger name. Thanks and keep up the great work!!!

Knives - January 21, 2005 08:32 PM (GMT)
Hmmm...well as long as Macs can open .ut4mod files (the type of proprietary executable that UT2004 uses to install things), then you should be just fine. We will also probably put out a .zip or .rar version of the game, but this will probably be much larger and you will have to install it manually, and this should definitely work on any Mac. Some people just like it better that way. Great question.

Narles - January 21, 2005 09:30 PM (GMT)
Thanks Knives! You have given me good new. Yes...the .zip or .rar version will definitely work on a Mac. Not so sure about the .ut4mod but it doesn't really matter as long as there's a .zip or .rar of it. Now I am even more eagerly awaiting this mod but I like how you guys aren't so worried about time but are more concerned with releasing an excellent mod. Keep it up!

Sir_Crono531 - January 21, 2005 10:02 PM (GMT)
That's what a mod is all about, taking your time making a really great game out of something and not worrying about a certain time limit, which i raelly wish i had the computer to help you guys out and the skill.

On that note, I just got the game, and I think I might get the dev tools for it (on a second DVD apparently).

I'm entirely new to the UT series, this'll be the first one I'll have ever even seen. I've done Q3A mapping before, but that's it. I wouldn't mind doing some mapping for the CTRP, I can think of a number of places that would be fun to remake. But don't put me down for anything. ;)

Yet. :)

ok im new here, but im a big fan of everything chrono-trigger...it's my favorite game and i own it for the original super nintendo, i have beatin it more than 50 times and i think what u guys are doing should be recognized...thanks alot and i really appreciate it. but one thing, can u tell me what i will have to download to use the game????

Duranix - May 3, 2005 05:21 AM (GMT)
ypu'll just have to download a Umod file, which will install the game for you.

That, or you can download a zip file which will have it pre installed, and all you will have to do is extract it.

You need UT2K4 for the mod to work.

Macintosh? A small part of the computer industry. Yeah right.
