Just to play Devil's advocate (and hence, estimate your chances for success), I thought I'd come along and ask a little bit of your current team's skills. Hence the following questions:

To all teams:
- What type of game do you intend to make? Will it be 3D? 2D?
- What prior work have you done related to the field you signed up for?
- How much time, do you as an individual, have on your hands to work on this task?

Writers/Designers/Artists:
- Have you taken any schooling on the concept of thinking up worlds, characters, etc? Can you visualize and form characters/worlds/etc in to your respective work?
- How much experience do you have in this field?

Music:
- How much experience do you have in this field?
- What kinds of music do you feel you make the best?
- Do you feel confident that you can make different compositions for the varying situations that may present themselves in a video game?
- Is there anyone able to work on sound effects?

Site/Web:
- Have you ever built a website before? If so, can you give the address?
- Do you feel you can create a page with a graphical theme that matches the game?
- Do you have any experience in advertising your site to the public?

Programmers:
- What programming language do you intend to use?
- What kind of experience do you have with the language?
- Did you take any classes on game design?
- Have you ever made your own game?
- How comfortable do you feel implementing physics in to an advanced video game world?
- How comfortable are you with making a 2D game and/or application?
- How comfortable are you with making a 3D game and/or application?

Mythology:
- No questions...

Obviously, for some of you, I am fully aware of your abilities. Others... not so much. Thus I am asking. I'm not trying to be the "bad guy", but some predictions should be made on just what your members are capable of before you begin anything. Get my drift? ;)

...Hopefully this will be more... helpful than annoying.

Hmmmm... I see. I'm not trying to be rude or anything; if I've been coming across that way, I apologize. The problem is, if you don't have things strongly organized and well thought-out, you may not succeed... or at the very least; you may have a lot of problems. Thinking before action is always a must, in any kind of situation. That is what I am trying to get across to you guys.

I've been part of many team projects in regards to my field. While it may not seem related at first; there is one thing in common, that there is a team working on it. A team can be a complicated thing to deal with. For one, a loosely-based team will have problems coordinating together for the finished product. In your case, this would be the game. If a team has members who cannot perform an essential task for the group, that can also be disastrous. What you need is to organize the groups a bit better. For one, there should be a "Head Project Manager" who specifies what the job is, and delegates the specific tasks to "lower Managers" (for each specific group). The lower Managers would then discuss with their corresponding team what their task is, and then work with them so as to complete the task so that it fits the specifications required by the Head Project Manager. Now obviously, some tasks need completion sooner than others. These cases likely being the work of the artists, designers, and writers. While waiting, each group that is inactive should be thinking up a "battle plan", of sorts, or in other words... the method they plan to use to fulfill their future task. In the programmer's case, this would be thinking up an algorithm. In this manner, time is used efficiently, and everyone will be prepared for the job that they must do.

Of course, this is just my opinion on the subject. I can, at the very least, say that my team projects that worked in this (or a similar) manner have typically done better than those that have not. In other words, I'm presenting a bit of my knowedge on the subject to you. Whether you want to use it or not is completely your choice.

GalaxyFalcon - February 12, 2006 12:25 AM (GMT)
So your saying, in a way use a pyramid. Gm tells the story department (Assuming im the head?) and i Pass it down, and discuss it with Crab and err, whoever else it is thats on our team. everyone else does the same with thier cell, then it goes back up to the lower mangers, then we dumb it all on gm and wolf.

GmMontex03 - February 12, 2006 08:32 AM (GMT)
Yes, galidan, you are right, i am the director. and apoc, thanks, that was what i was planning on doing. I meet mainly with the leads/heads most of the time, but will meet with the whole team occasionaly. But with that quote, I actually got that off or Miracle. Miracle, for those of you who don't know, tells the true story of Herb Brooks (Russell), the player-turned-coach who led the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team to victory over the seemingly invincible Russian squad. They brought in the real team, footage from videos shot, and found not actors, but hockey players who could play. The coach, Herb Brooks, placed alot of input on the story and everything, but sadly died durring the filming and never saw the finished product. Anyways, in the movie, the two coaches were talking while the triouts are going on and alot of people are cut durring the first day/few days. but heres what they said...
QUOTE

Craig Patrick: You're missing the best players.
Herb Brooks: I'm not looking for the best players, Craig, I'm lookin' for the right ones.
and you know what, hes right, you might have the best on a team, but have a bad team. But if you have the right ones you could do better. I experimented with that on NHL 06 befor seeing the movie and i made my own players, but when i paired the best ones togeather in there respected positions they had worse chemestry then some that were not so good. The team had a bad record through out the preolimpic season, but won every round at the olimpics. Miracle, i think so. The way the olimpic team is formed now has been changed because of what happened then and I am looking to change how free-lance-free-games are made.

GmMontex03 - February 12, 2006 08:39 AM (GMT)
Oh yea, just so the other one isnt too long, heres another quote, arround the same time...
QUOTE
Herb Brooks: Take a look at this.
Craig Patrick: What's this?
Herb Brooks: Twenty-six names.
[pause]
Herb Brooks: The tough part will be getting it down to twenty before the opening ceremonies.
Craig Patrick: This is the final roster? You're kidding me, right? This is our first day, Herb. We've got a week of this. What about the advisory staff? Aren't they supposed to have a say in this?
Herb Brooks: Not technically.
Craig Patrick: You're missing some of the best players.
Herb Brooks: I'm not looking for the best players, Craig. I'm looking for the right ones.
Craig Patrick: You have Jim Craig to back up Janisack?
Herb Brooks: Other way around.
Craig Patrick: Other way around? I'm sorry didn't Janisack just win you a national championship?
Herb Brooks: Janny is a solid goal tender, but we're not playing for the national championship here, Craig.
Craig Patrick: You know people I speak to say that Craig's game has been off since his mom died.
Herb Brooks: They ever see him when his game's on?

You guys should watch this movie, and Rounders, and ill give you another one that I thought was good.

QUOTE
Herb Brooks: All-star teams fail because they rely solely on the individual's talent. The Soviets win because they take that talent and use it inside a system that's designed for the betterment of the team. My goal is to beat 'em at their own game.
Lou Nanne: Beat the best team in the world? Gold medallists in '64, '68, '72, '76? Pretty lofty goal, Herb.

QUOTE

Herb Brooks: [voiceover] Two days later the miracle was made complete. My boys defeated Finland to win the gold medal, coming from behind once again. As I watched them out there, celebrating on the ice, I realized that Patti had been right. It was a lot more than a hockey game, not only for those who watched it, but for those who played in it. I've often been asked in the years since Lake Placid what was the best moment for me. Well, it was here - the sight of 20 young men of such differing backgrounds now standing as one. Young men willing to sacrifice so much of themselves all for an unknown. A few years later, the U.S. began using professional athletes at the Games - Dream Teams. I always found that term ironic because now that we have Dream Teams, we seldom ever get to dream. But on one weekend, as America and the world watched, a group of remarkable young men gave the nation what it needed most - a chance, for one night, not only to dream, but a chance, once again, to believe.
