It's multi-choosing! So pick the ones that apply to you...

Sturmtruppe - September 14, 2003 09:04 PM (GMT)
3 words.
SCREW
YOU
STEAM!

Legend - September 15, 2003 09:06 AM (GMT)
give it a break :o
Steam is new....don't just hate it....try it, you'll like it ;)
i know steam is screwy right now and there are good reasons for that, too many people are trying to get Steam simultaneously which makes steam content servers bog down...
Steam installation was taking a long time, but now its getting better, now they have more servers online :) it takes a long time to load but that happens only the first time...it works great afterwords :D

Sturmtruppe - September 15, 2003 07:53 PM (GMT)
i have words for you!

<rant>i have, it sucks. i HATE STUPID-STEAM-SO-MUCH-I..I...SPIT ON IT! I hate it for a number of reasons, i have to remove everything i have and bascially dedicate everything to steam everything must run off steam, i dont like that. I have to use my CD key PLUS an account! which means that i cant use 2 cd keys to use on the same mod with the same account and well, i just dont like the colours. and dont tell me i can skin it cause i know the truth. I KNOW IT WELL!!!
i stick to my previous statement</rant>

I wouldn't mind Steam if people weren't being FORCED to use it. Why after 5 years would Valve release an inferior program, that will cause more havoc then good. It's really problematic, and it is way slower then normal WON connect type. It's literally impossible for people with bad connection types to use steam as it forces yet another heavy load upon a limited connection so they don't have any spare to use for any mod. I've already used Steam before and it took forever to get into the game, and I had lots of problems even connecting to TFC or anything for that matter. I'm probably going to be quitting HL because of this, and a lot of people I know have already quit. It's only harming the community. If they were smart they would give you a choice as they did previously, but now they don't so screw Valve. My class specific binds will be impossible to use because Steam doesn't allow you to execute them off autoexec, my custom sprities are defaulted once again, and several custom settings are missing. After playing with my current setting for over the last 3 years (since I learned how to use them) I'd rather just not play at all. I'm too use to what I have now and playing using alien settings with 400 ping and 50 choke ON GOOD PING servers when I'm on a cable connection is too much :( If something radical doesn't happen then within the next week I'm gone from TFC

It's ok Legend, really Steam isn't as bad... BUT I'm going to investigate it... It's not that I hate Steam, it's the concept that Valve is forcing everyone onto it... I liked the way it was before as an option. Maybe now the latency won't be that bad, but there isn't a lot of servers up or players on... until the traffic DOES and/or IF... then what will happen? Then there's the spyware installed on your computer... Valve sells OUR personal info for cash... <- now this just pisses me off

OMFG_ILC - September 16, 2003 07:59 AM (GMT)
Hehe Legend :D Like Chicky and I are trying to say is Steam itself is fine, but the fact that Valve is forcing it on people isn't good. It does have some spyware, which is an invasion of privacy to say the least. And so far in the server listings that I've seen 90% of them are above 300 ping for now  Hopefully ping wise it will improve with time, but the poor 56kers will still be left without the ability to play :(

I honestly like steam. I have since it came out. Works fine for me, and most people who i talk to say it's starting to work for them. Steam is starting to head in the right direction. As for server pings highest i've seen is about 180. Also my friend on 56k says he can play it pretty decently, I haven't seen it though.

Hello People and greeting from Brazillian TFC for you all.
So, what are the system requirements for steam? 'cos I have a P3 750Mhz with a Geforce2 and I was so disappointed that I'm not able to even see the moveis of hl2. Will this steam crap need more machine than I have? If yes, I would like to say "Hey Valve, please, find someone else to annoy and leave me here playing"
see ya

p.s. Is this avatar too big?

OMFG_ILC - September 17, 2003 04:06 AM (GMT)
some 56kers I know still have lots of trouble installing Steam let alone playing it :( hopefully all the issues that people are still experiencing will be continued to be ironed out, including STEAM GETTING RID OF THE $@%@%@ SPYWARE @#%%@%@ :cries: You can't even take it off without killing off the functionality of Steam :noway:

chikichicky - September 19, 2003 03:03 AM (GMT)
funny... it seems I have a lot of popups recently since the installment of steam... like webcams of girls or showy stuff....I just did an adware clean up :\ plus why else would you need an e-mail for registering on steam? Oh, sure sent you a few updates or whatever now and then.. they sell your e-mails for mula y0 :\

OMFG_ILC - September 21, 2003 06:49 AM (GMT)
yep, thats a common practice for things like this. They require an email then they sell it off to all the solictation sites they know, and you get thousands of junk mail that you can't block no matter how many times you try :( Best to just create a free account that you don't care about.

i doubt theyre doing spyware. they will(i hope) clean out their registered users database as soon as they kill WON, add email verification, and do peer 2 peer updating to help relieve their servers.

if any spyware, then it would be to check for cheats. youre not a cheater are you? no? good, nothing to worry bout.

adaware 6 w/ current(as of today) definitions shows i was clean cept for IE tracking cookies like doubbleclick.net stuff.

chikichicky - November 3, 2003 06:13 PM (GMT)
funny though... after I gave out my e-mail to steam there's loads of junk mail in both my folders... and they're all the formal ones (if you know what I'm talking about) I definately have my suspicions..

Steam on Cable = Little Gay

Steam on DSL = Glitchy

Steam on 56k = fux0rzING HELL OF THE ONLINE WORLD!!!!

in my opnion, i think steam is a way for high speed providers to gain some money. Kinda like Roadrunner and oher such providers. I think that its all a conspiracy to make everyone pay high prices for such bull sh*t results...... :unf:

OMFG_ILC - February 8, 2004 02:55 AM (GMT)
you never know, but Steam has really brought down all the HL communities. So many users have quit, people losing interest in playing, and a lot of clans dying due to Steam as well. Even if it was brought about with innocent purposes, its only cause severe harm to a community that has lasted over 5 years and would have faired a lot better without Steam's intervention.

curious george - February 11, 2004 01:28 AM (GMT)
meh, i dont see it that way, if you wanted to, you could just stay with the won, although not permanent, it would prevent you from having steam for a while. I love that 56k'ers dont use steam that much. Im sorry, but i hate having all of theses guys jumping from one side of the map to the other, i could of played tfc 2 years before i could, but didnt because i had a crappy computer and a 56k modem. After i got both, i played tfc and had the most fun i have ever had!

chikichicky - February 17, 2004 04:01 AM (GMT)
Haha, the laggers that take 10 years to get across the map? Yeah, I've seen my fair share of those players. I know some pretty ownage TFC 56kers though.. they can still play well regardless. It really depends what server... so once you find a home place to play.. you're all set to go. Not everyone has the money to fork out every month for a faster connection. It shouldn't deprive them of a 5 year old game either.

That is exactly true. Its understandable that people who need to upgrade their connections and computers to play games like Doom3, Half-Life 2, or Quake 4 but nobody should have to make a concession to play Half-Life. Even server operates have to upgrade their systems just to handle the extra demand of Steam. Server companies have already lost a lot of money due to the loss of several clans that have quit HL since Steam's release. It's really hard to repair reputations these days and Valve will never be able to fix their. I had even had to get a new freaking CD-Key because for some reason Valve decided to forget me in their flawed database. Several thousand people have also encountered this problem, and are forced to buy new copies just to play. Sorry but its not very fair to ask people to pay another $30 or so on a game they already payed $50 for. Never has anyone been subjected to bs like this. yet Valve decided to turn their backs to the cry of gamers everywhere and release the inferior Steam.
