Title: Games cited in recent deaths

OMFG_ILC - August 30, 2003 09:50 AM (GMT)
The Morning News of Northwest Arkansas recently reported that a 36-year-old mother neglected her 3-year-old daughter while playing EverQuest for several hours, resulting in the child's death. The child was allegedly left in a car without ventilation. Mary Christina Cordell faces felony manslaughter charges, according to a Springdale, Arkansas, police spokesman. A Springdale police detective stated, "We believe that on the day in question, Ms. Cordell was playing an Internet game, EverQuest, for a period of time exceeding two hours, during which she had no knowledge concerning the whereabouts of her daughter."

According to NWAOnline.net, messages posted to a site run by a group called Spouses Against EverQuest under Mary Christina Cordell's name suggested that the game was "addictive" and was in part responsible for her divorce: "I feel sorry that people get wrapped up into this and destroy their relationships. I just hope that one day they will wake up before it's too late and realize they are alone with no real friends and their family is gone."

Also, an Associated Press report today states that two teenage stepbrothers, ages 16 and 13, from Newport, Tennessee, told police they were imitating Grand Theft Auto when they fired a .22-caliber rifle up to 25 times at vehicles along Interstate 40 on June 25 of this year.

The two pleaded guilty to reckless homicide, reckless endangerment, and aggravated assault after shooting and killing a 45-year-old man and injuring a 19-year-old woman.

The AP report states the two have been sentenced to juvenile prison.

that's very stupid of her... who else would have put the daughter in the car? the dog? her husband possibly at work? the neighbor? the daughter herself who got keys and let herself in? How can she NOT know where her daughter is? She probably said, "Yes, honey.. I'll be back in 5 minutes to get something.." Then she doesn't come back for 3 hours.. she probably didn't even think of leaving a single window open... A game is one thing, but there's much more things that are important especially your family and children...

Its all fun and games until someone gets hurt :(
Stupidity is a good term to describe this. I mean she puts the kid in the car and then runs off to play EQ?? WTH! Then she claims that she didnt know where she was :noway: pretty sad. Hope she feels good knowing she had just murdered her 3 year old child.

maybe she just shrugged it off and drowned her "misery" in playing more everquest...

gah thats one way, but those people are dimwits. No one whos SANE would take a gun on a highway and randomly shoot any car thats not ur favorite color or something

no too long ago an elderly man died from a heart attack after playing 16 straight hours of CS...
ok so they might think games are fun to play, but its really sad when they let the games they play control them.
What I like the best are when a child kills his parents and police automatically blame it on him playing violent games and completely neglect the fact that the child went through years of abuse, growing up in the ghettos, and had druggies for friends. Always the same story yet, they choose to look past the important factors of the kid's life that causeed it

they probably just one todays kids to be more, eh- old type. SO they try to boycott games. Well no way. If games became illegal, it would become even wider spread than drugs lol.

That would be stupid on their part for assuming it's all games... Let's see I wrote up something about this on another forum.. Let me fetch the link...

instead of thinking of "how the game caused them to do what they did", think "why did they decide to mimick what they see in the game".
when my little bro(3rd, im first of 3) shapes a gun w/ his hand or gets the SNES superscope and points it at me and starts making shooting sounds.... I KICK HIM!!!
im not being cruel to him, think about it like training a pet to not crap in the house.

:boxing:

rough love.

very true, if someone is being influenced by something they play, see on tv, or hear on the music you have to teach them whats right. Thats a very smart thing to do gilliam. Especially with younger kids who are very naive, they need to be taught the difference between right and wrong. keep the killing in the game, not in real life.

I think that's a smart gesture. It's so that violence is not encouraged and it's rude to be pointing imaginary guns at someone. I think I have a faint recall of my cousin and I being taught the same thing. My mom told me that it was rude to be pointing a gun or even your hand mimicing a gun. I had a few cap guns back then, but I don't remember if that had anything to do with it lol.. But hey, at least I was allowed to play with them =D
