Title: Film Updates
Purple Ranger 14 - November 9, 2004 06:49 AM (GMT)
This is where we will discuss & post updates about the LIVE ACTION Transformers movie.
Transformers Morph Ahead
John Rogers (Catwoman) is writing Transformers, a DreamWorks/Paramount live-action SF movie based on the popular Hasbro toys, Variety reported. Steven Spielberg is executive producing the movie, which is slated for a summer 2006 release and is being eyed as the start of a franchise, the trade paper reported.
Angry Films chief Don Murphy and Tom DeSanto, who executive produced the two X-Men films, are producing the movie, along with Lorenzo Di Bonaventura. DeSanto wrote the story that Rogers will adapt, the trade paper reported.
Transformers, which were popular in the 1980s, are giant robots that morph into cars, trucks and planes.

Transformers movie updates by Don Murphy and John Rodgers
UPDATE 1/30/05
I will try to help you here. Ali G is Sacha Baron Cohen. Borat is
Sacha Baron Cohen. It's the same f*cking guy. He TRANSFORMS into
different characters. He is even playing the gay Bruno on the show.
And maybe a gay Transformer or two. (TFW2005: Tracks anyone? )
You want Pg-13? You're gonna get PG13 you bleep bleeper.
The characters will be Gen 1 Marvel and Cartoon. BUT the humans are
as important as the Robots. The Robots are among us. Waiting.
Watching.
Cannot promise DARK but will make it Darkish. Will be epic for sure.
And definitely not Kiddie I want the Star wars audience man (the
good films)
Screenwriter By end of October 04, First Draft by Feb 05, Director

Shooting starts July 05, Editing starts November 05, But all this $#!
* is ROUGH, verily. We got the first thing done anyway.
They come from Cybertron. They are not man made. They are here
because we have the matrix (probably can't call it that anymore).
Very happy to report that the talented Tom DeSanto and I had the
luck to meet this morning with Simon Furman, Transformers Historian
Extraordinaire. We brought him up to speed on the movie as it stands
now. He brought us a glimpse into the dark and deep recesses of his
noggin. It was a very exciting first meeting, under a sunny sky in
the courtyard of the old Charlie Chaplin lot (now owned by the the
Jim Henson heirs) and was FOR SURE the beginning of many good things
to come. So now you know...... and soon the world will know.
YOUR VOICES Heard. Just prior to leaving for five glorious days on
the beach I sat down withe the producers and John Rogers and went
over where the story was going. Remember - everything you post is
read (at least by me) and when there seems to be a consensus it will
be addressed if at all possible. For example, a huge amount of fans
want Cullen and Welker. While the truth is (no matter what you read
anywhere else) that no one has been approached to do ANY voices (the
process of filmmaking will make that the final decision of the
director) it is something that has been heard and will be addressed
when the time comes. I can't go into where the story is going, only
to say John is great and I have invited him on to the board. And to
put an end to a controversy that I never understood, I am pleased to
tell you that John HAS come up with a plausible explanation that
will allow some of the bots to mass/size shift. This was important
to a lot of you and I wanted you to know you have been heard. Will
it work? Will it be any good? Will it make it on to the screen? Who
the hell knows? The only thing I know for sure is we're trying here.
TFW2005: When asked if he had approached various car companies,
truck (big rig for Prime) for license and whether foreign military
vehicles would be considered for Decepticons, Don answered YES to
all three questions. Good news indeed.
Unicron is mentioned in film one and may show up in the third.
I got the script last night delivered to my house on silver paper

reading it but you are distracting me. Stop it!

Spelberg mentions transformers director to be announced withen 3 weeks
As I said earlier, our man Tom Leupp was on the set of WAR OF THE
WORLDS last night in Los Angeles and was able to chat with Tom
Cruise, Steven Spielberg and producer Kathleen Kennedy. While Cruise
mentioned that IRON MAN wasn't in his future, Spielberg said that
he's still very much involved in the feature film adaptation of THE
TRANSFORMERS and that a director would be announced in three weeks.
So that must mean they've got their guy and are just waiting for the
requisite negotiations and scheduling. Interesting... Spies? Get
your ears to the wall and find out! In other news, producer Kennedy
said INDIANA JONES 4 is still moving along with Jeff Nathanson
(CATCH ME IF YOU CAN) working on the latest draft. He's due to
deliver his script in about a month's time and at that point we
could have a decision about whether to move ahead on the film or
not.

Transformers The Movie Gets Pushed Back
Well, looks like the writing team change is taking it's toll on the
scheduled release date of summer 2006. The new release date is
apparently November 17, 2006. Most fans shouldn't mind the change,
as long as it helps ensure a quality movie.
Personally i think this is no real setback i beleive if it helps
make a better movie im all for it.Better to fix the small things now
then letting them get worse and the movie doesn't go ahead, this
recently happened to a big aussie film Now it might not make

New Transformers Movie Writers Announced
IGN.com is reporting that the new writers have been confirmed for
the new Transformers Movie. As reported earlier John Rodgers is
contracted to work on another project.
IGN FilmForce can now exclusively report who that new set of writers
are: Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. The scribes are perhaps best
known for their work on the TV series Alias and Xena, but they've
also penned forthcoming feature films like The Island, Legend of
Zorro and Mission: Impossible III.
Purple Ranger 14 - March 2, 2005 04:05 PM (GMT)
Transformers Has New Writers
Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman have been brought on to rewrite the script for the upcoming film Transformers, according to the IGN FilmForce Web site. The writing team are best known for their work on television series such as Alias and Xena: Warrior Princess, but they have several feature scripts currently in production, including The Island, The Legend of Zorro and Mission: Impossible III.
The film's previous screenwriter, John Rogers (The Core, Catwoman), announced on his personal blog that he turned in a revised draft of the script, but is no longer working on the film. Steven Spielberg told SCI FI Wire in an interview last week that he is still producing Transformers, and that he will be announcing a director in a couple of weeks.

Bay boards live-action pic, Spielberg exec-produces
By MICHAEL FLEMING
Michael Bay is looking to direct "The Transformers" for DreamWorks
and Paramount. The live-action pic, which Steven Spielberg is exec
producing, is skedded for a Thanksgiving 2006 release. Shooting will
begin in the fall.
The project had been gestating at the studio until Spielberg came up
with a new take, which he imparted to scribes Alex Kurtzman and
Roberto Orci. (Pic's original script was by John Rogers.) Kurtzman
and Orci built on the idea and pitched it to Bay, whom they worked
with on DreamWorks' upcoming summer actioner "The Island," and he
sparked to it. DreamWorks production prexy Adam Goodman's
relationship with Bay was also instrumental in bringing about the
deal.
Kurtzman and Orci are expected to turn in a script within a month,
at which point DreamWorks is hoping to lock in Bay.
The Transformers spawned a comicbook series, TV show and animated
feature in the 1980s and have a devout following among the retro
set. This is Hollywood's first attempt to transform them to the live-
action screen.Angry Films' Don Murphy and Tom DeSanto are producing
along with Lorenzo di Bonaventura. Marc Haimes and John Fox are
overseeing the pic for DreamWorks.
Through his Platinum Dunes banner, Bay is a producer on MGM's remake
of "The Amityville Horror," due out this month.

'Transformers' on Bay's radar
HOLLYWOOD REPORTER
By Borys Kit and Liza Foreman
Michael Bay is in talks to direct the DreamWorks/Paramount live-
action adaptation of "The Transformers," Hasbro's popular 1980s toy
line of giant robots that morph into cars, trucks, planes, ships and
other technological creations.
The move would reteam the director with DreamWorks, which is
handling domestic distribution on the movie. Bay is helming
DreamWorks' upcoming summer release "The Island," a co-production
with Warner Bros. Pictures.
Bay also would reteam with writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci,
who -- under their two-year, first-look deal with DreamWorks --
rewrote "Island" and wrote "Transformers."
The Transformers are divided into two groups of robots, one led by
Optimus Prime, which believes in tolerance and the sanctity of life,
the other by Megatron, which espouses survival of the fittest and
the extermination of biological life.
Angry Films topper Don Murphy and Tom DeSanto, who wrote the screen
story, are producing the feature along with Lorenzo di Bonaventura.
Steven Spielberg will executive produce.
John Rogers wrote the initial draft.
Marc Haimes and John Fox are overseeing for DreamWorks.
A Nov. 17, 2006, release date has been set.
Bay's credits include the two "Bad Boys" movies, "Pearl
Harbor," "Armageddon" and "The Rock." He is repped by WMA.

Writers Morph To Transformers
Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, the team that co-wrote The Island for Michael Bay, told SCI FI Wire they're now facing the challenge of putting the Transformer toys on the big screen for what might be Bay's next project. "We're calling it Campbell Soup: The Movie, because it's the ultimate product placement," Kurtzman said with a laugh. "The big challenge is how do you do it without making it look like it's just about product placement."
The screenwriting team, who also wrote for TV's Alias, is developing characters and personalities for the toys that turn into all sorts of other things, including unifying into a giant robot.
"In terms of Transformers, it's sort of the same approach as we approach anything," Orci said. "We've been very diligent to find what the character story is."
Added Kurtzman: "How do you do giant robots and care? You can't just put the toy up there, and what are you going to do? How do they relate to the story? How [do] they relate to the humans so it's not just a toy commercial?"
For his part, Bay said that he isn't sure that he will helm the Transformers movie as his next project or simply produce it, though news reports have said he is considering directing. Bay said that he can't even think about his next project until he finishes editing The Island, which comes out July 22. He said that he will be hiring more people to be involved with the project, based on the toys that were created in the 1980s.

Is Transformers Happening?
Source: Edward Douglas July 11, 2005
That seems to be the question on everyone's minds after reports that the live action Transformers, executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, has been back-burnered, while writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci go to Rome to start working on Mission: Impossible 3 with Tom Cruise and director J.J. Abrams, with whom they've worked for many years on the ABC show Alias. (We'll have more on that a little later today.)
Well, it is true that they are going to Rome, but that doesn't mean that the duo aren't on top of the Transformers situation, as they told ComingSoon.net while talking to us about Michael Bay's The Island earlier today.
"'Transformers' is very tricky, because it's a movie based on a toy line," Kurtzman told us, when asked about how hard it might be to turn the Hasbro toys into a feature film. "The first question you have to ask yourself is what's the movie? We sat down with Steven Spielberg, and we said that the action scenes in this movie are a given, but he said that that it's the story of a boy and his car and that he wants to bring back the old Amblin movies. It's 'Back to the Future'…great! We're in! It's a real challenge, because the key to making those movies work--and I totally think it's why 'War of the Worlds' works so well--is to be so invested in the people and to maintain the subjectivity of the humans. If you start 'Transformers' with giant robots sitting in a spaceship flying through space, your movie is dead in the water. It's all about keeping it at a human level, and seeing the amazing things that are going on through the eyes of the characters."
The Transformers legacy is so vast and full of characters, we just had to know who they may be including in the story. "The staple characters: Optimus Prime, Megatron, Soundwave, Shockwave, Starscream, Jazz," Kurtzman replied. "There's going to be a lot of them. You're going to have ten Transformers in that movie, and if that's not enough, you can go see 2, 3, 4 or 5."
"The meat and potatoes are going to be in there," writing partner Robert Orci continued. "We're just missing the premise for the sequels."
They still believe that Michael Bay may be directing the movie, but they do have to hand in the script before he makes a final decision. Neither said anything about a "two week deadline" that has been mentioned on other sites. Later on, Bay was just as non-committal, although he did say they were working on the script and designing it right now.

Independence Day for Transformers
By Joal Ryan
Wed Jul 13, 8:35 PM ET
Optimus Prime has a prime release date: The Fourth of July.
Transformers, the long-planned, live-action movie based on the robot-morphing cartoon, comic and toy franchise, will roll into theaters July 4, 2007, DreamWorks and Paramount Pictures announced Wednesday. Michael Bay (The Island, The Rock) will direct; Steven Spielberg will executive produce.
Children of the 1980s likely will be champing at the tie-in lunchbox.
"The diehard fans will like it as long as it stays true to Transformers roots and doesn't stray too far from the ideals that we grew up with," Brendan Reilly, co-Webmaster of The Transformers Archive (www.tfarchive.com), said in an email interview about the movie announcement. "The casual or un-familar fan will need to see something awesome to win them over, although a 40-foot robot is usually pretty cool."
Cool-looking robots who convert themselves into battle tanks and other vehicles in order blow up things real good are at the mechanical heart of the Transformers, the classic tale of good automaton (the Autobots) versus evil automaton (the Decepticons) in a battle for control of Earth. Optimus Prime is the leader of the Autobots; Megatron, the dark lord of the Decepticons. Both Autobots and Decepticons hail from the planet Cybertron. All this backstory and more was revealed in Transformers, the syndicated cartoon series launched in 1984 with the help of toy-maker Hasbro, which simultaneously--and savvily--launched a still-thriving merchandise line.
Purple Ranger 14 - July 15, 2005 06:14 PM (GMT)
No less savvy today, the makers of the new Transformers movie have already begun a full-scale offensive. The new official Website (www.transformers.com) went up Tuesday. Transformers: Cybertron, the latest animated series, launched this month on Cartoon Network. Burger King cooks up a monthlong action-figure promotion beginning in August. And this weekend in San Diego, on the occasion of Comic-Con International, the geek world's largest annual gawkfest, an 18-wheel truck touting the franchise's considerable wares will be beached in the convention hall.
In theory then, this thing ain't going to be Transformers: The Movie.
Transformers: The Movie was the little-loved 1986 animated feature that gave Optimus Prime, Megatron, et al., their first crack at the silver screen. Much as Fox is planning to right past cinematic wrongs with an all-new, A-list take on He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, another 1980s cartoon/toy phenomenon that spawned a cheeseball 1980s film, the new Transformers crew is looking to take its property upscale.
Purple Ranger 14 - July 15, 2005 06:15 PM (GMT)
In a message board Monday post on his personal Website (www.donmurphy.net), Don Murphy, a Transformers co-executive producer, said Spielberg, DreamWorks and Hasbro are committed to making a film that is no less than "GREAT" (the capital letters are all his).
"It will be GREAT," Murphy continued, "and then we will make sequel after sequel. There is no doubt that this is true."
With excellence promised, the powers that be now need only to lock in actors and writers--none were announced Wednesday--and start cameras rolling. Time, after all, is of the essence. In publicly staking claim to July 4, 2007, DreamWorks and Paramount become the first studios to reserve that holiday date for their own. Currently, the only other release on the 2007 calendar is Spider-Man 3, set for May 4 of that year.
Until Transformers debuts in theaters, and after Comic-Con wraps, its considerable fandom can busy itself with BotCon (www.transformersclub.com/conventions/frisco/), described by organizer Brian Savage as being "like a giant group hug for everyone who enjoys Transformers."
Purple Ranger 14 - July 15, 2005 06:17 PM (GMT)
Scheduled for Sept. 22-25 in Frisco, Texas, the latest edition of BotCon--the event is more than 10 years old--is expected to draw as many as 5,000 devotees of the shape-changing robots. "The whole movie announcement just adds more fire and fuel," said Savage, director of Hasbro's official Transformers Collectors Club.
The way Savage sees it, the unlikely secret to the Transformers' success is: Personality. Anyone, he said, can make a transforming robot.
"But guess what? It's not Optimus Prime."
The live-action "Transformers" movie has been set to open nationwide on 07-04-07, it was jointly announced today by DreamWorks Pictures, Hasbro, Inc.
(NYSE: HAS), and Paramount Pictures.
The feature, based on the globally popular Transformers franchise, will be directed by Michael Bay (upcoming "The Island," "Armageddon") from a screenplay being written by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci (upcoming "The Island"). Steven Spielberg ("War of the Worlds") is executive producing the film, with Lorenzo di Bonaventura (upcoming "Four Brothers"), Tom DeSanto ("X-Men" and "X2: X-Men United") and Don Murphy ("The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen") serving as co-executive producers.
In making the announcement, DreamWorks head of distribution Jim Tharp stated, "Under the direction of Michael Bay, and with Steven Spielberg executive producing, we know that `Transformers' is going to be the kind of explosive action movie that is perfect for the height of the summer movie season. By staking our claim on the 4th of July, 2007, we ensure that we not only have the time to make this movie the way it should be made, but also to build excitement and awareness leading up to its release."
Purple Ranger 14 - July 15, 2005 06:17 PM (GMT)
"Fans around the world have wanted a Transformers live-action movie for a long time and we are thrilled to work with DreamWorks and Paramount to bring this legendary saga to life on the big screen," said Brian Goldner, President of Hasbro's U.S. Toy segment. "With some of the entertainment industry's best talent on board for this film, fans will experience Transformers in a way that is incredibly powerful."
DreamWorks will distribute the film domestically, while Paramount will handle the international release. Hasbro will work with the production team and DreamWorks on all aspects of the film's creative development, marketing and promotions, and will manage merchandising in conjunction with the release of the film.
This week, DreamWorks is launching the official "Transformers" movie website (www.transformers.com) at Comic-Con International, being held from July 13 - 17 in San Diego, California. "Transformers" will also be making its presence known in a big way, with a huge 18-wheeler truck sporting the instantly recognizable Transformers logo dominating the area around the DreamWorks booth-and much of the convention floor-letting thousands of fans know that "Transformers" is coming to the big screen on 07-04-07.

Introduced in 1984, the Transformers brand took the world by storm with its compelling saga of the Autobots versus the Decepticons. The innovative "Robots in Disguise" resulted in a tremendously successful toy line from Hasbro and Takara, comic book series, television program and an animated feature film. More than 20 years later, a new generation has discovered the excitement of the Transformers brand and its legendary characters, including the two leaders of the opposing sides: Optimus Prime and Megatron. Today, the franchise features a popular toy line, an animated series on the Cartoon Network and a chart-topping comic book series from IDW Publishing.
DreamWorks SKG was formed in October 1994 by its three principal partners-Steven Spielberg, Jeffrey Katzenberg and David Geffen. The studio is actively involved in the production of live-action motion pictures and network and cable television programs, and the distribution of live-action and animated feature films, as well as home video entertainment.
Hasbro (NYSE:HAS) is a worldwide leader in children's and family leisure time entertainment products and services, including the design, manufacture and marketing of games and toys, such as MONOPOLY and G.I. Transformers Set To Roll
Transformers will roll into movie theaters on July 4, 2007, according to a statement from DreamWorks Pictures, Paramount Pictures and Hasbro, Inc., and a report on Zap2it.com.
Further, Michael Bay (Armageddon and the upcoming The Island) is now officially on board to direct the film, which will be based on the adventures of the Hasbro/Takara toy line that debuted in 1984 and has already spawned comic books, animated television shows and an animated feature film.
"Under the direction of Michael Bay, and with Steven Spielberg executive-producing, we know that Transformers is going to be the kind of explosive action movie that is perfect for the height of the summer movie season," Zap2it.com quoted DreamWorks' head of distribution, Jim Tharp, as saying. "By staking our claim on the Fourth of July, 2007, we ensure that we not only have the time to make this movie the way it should be made, but also to build excitement and awareness leading up to its release."
DreamWorks will release Transformers domestically, while Paramount will handle it internationally.

Transformers Still Scripting
Screenwriting partners Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci told SCI FI Wire that they are writing the screenplay for the upcoming Transformers movie, but that it's not easy turning a toy franchise into a film. "Transformers is very tricky," Kurtzman said in an interview while promoting his latest movie, The Island. "It's a movie franchise based on a toy line, so the first question you have to ask yourself is, 'Well, what's the movie?'"
Kurtzman added: "We sat down with [executive producer] Steven Spielberg and we said, 'Listen, the action scenes in this movie are a given. So what's the movie?' And he said, 'It's the story of a boy and his car. I want to bring back the old Amblin movies.' I went, 'Oh, my God, Back to the Future. Great. We're in.' So we got it. And it's a real challenge, because very much like The Island, very much, I think, like pretty much any movie-and I totally believe it's why War of the Worlds worked so well-the key to making those movies work is to be so invested in the people and to maintain the subjectivity of your humans. If you start Transformers with giant robots sitting in a spaceship flying through space, your movie is dead in the water. So it's all about keeping it at a human level and seeing the amazing things that are going on through the eyes of your characters."
Michael Bay, who directed The Island, has been attached to direct Transformers, but hasn't committed to it. Orci said it's likely that Bay will ultimately helm Transformers, but he added that nothing is set in stone. "We haven't handed him a script yet," Orci said. "He's nice to even say he might based on being friendly to us."

Josh Duhamel Talks About Transformers in Interview
Quote:
The Physicality of Turistas Compared to Michael Bay’s Transformers: “Different. I mean, that was tough in its own way, too, because he demands a lot, too. Both these guys are similar in that way. They demand a lot from you, and you gotta come ready to play. That was different in the sense that it was a lot of heat, and we had a lot of equipment and stuff on, and carrying big, heavy guns, and running through the sand. But you know, similar, but not that same.”
Was Transformers a Physically Painful Experience?: Shia LaBeouf said he went through hell working on Transformers. Did Duhamel share the same experience? “Yeah, I guess.
He didn't have to carry a big gun, though. He just had like his jeans and a sweat top and tennis shoes. We had like full army gear the whole time. But he worked. He's the lead of the movie. He's the one who was there more than anybody. It's definitely a pretty taxing movie, too.”
The Rumors of Transformers Reshoots: “Not yet. I'm sure there will be at some point. They'll probably have to pick up some stuff, but I don't know of anything yet.”
Michael Bay the Prankster: Bay’s known to pull off a joke or two on his cast and crew. “He didn't get me, but he did do some stuff to people,” said Duhamel. “It's like he's known for just being like... He wants everything sort of at his fingertips all the time. Like we're downtown LA and he's got people going from one end of the street to the other end of the street, crew was like pushing carts and getting cameras. ‘Okay, shoot this here. Go here. I want to get this here.’ End of the night, he's like, ‘Okay everybody, we need to get this last shot down here! I want A and B cameras down here! We're going to be shooting this way! I want to light it like this! Get everything lit, we're going to be shooting...Set up the stuff to come down here. The explosion's going to come down here. Blah, blah, blah.’ So they're like, ‘F**k, we've got 15 minutes, 20 minutes left before we're wrapping.’ And everybody gets down there, [and he says,] ‘Just kidding! That's a wrap!’ Like he thinks it's hilarious, and the crew so wanted to kill him! (Laughing) He's great though, I gotta say. He was a pleasure to work with - for the most part.”
The Robots of Transformers: Duhamel has seen them. “I have. I've seen a little bit of it cut together. It's wicked. It's going to be cool. They say it's going to be more photo-real than any sort of stuff of this type that's been done. So we'll hope!”
