Furtado Lines Up Special Guests: Timbaland, Chris Martin, Justin?
Singer hopes to book different guests for different continents on early '07 tour.
by Jennifer Vineyard
Nelly Furtado has so many guests on her latest album, she's trying to see if they can all make it to her world party. The singer's in the midst of organizing her upcoming Get Loose Tour, and if it all works out, she's going to have surprise guests tailored to each continent the tour visits.
In Europe, for instance, Coldplay's Chris Martin "should get an invitation" to join her for their duet "All Good Things (Come to an End)" (see "Nelly Furtado Double-Dips With Two Soaking-Wet Videos"). In Latin America, she'd like to sing with Juanes on their collaboration, "Te Busque." And if their paths cross on their respective world tours, she'd like to hook up with Justin Timberlake, with whom she's recorded several unreleased tracks.
"We were thinking of touring together," Furtado said, "but it didn't make sense for both of us, so we went our separate ways. But I'll probably come up to some of the Justin shows, so hopefully he'll return the favor and come to some of mine."
Also on the guest list: frequent Furtado and Timberlake collaborator Timabaland. "He toured a little bit with me on my Whoa, Nelly! tour," she said, "so I'm sure he'll come back and do his thing. We love performing together, so that should be a lot of fun."
As for an opening act, she wants it to be a revolving door, with each artist doing 10 to 15 dates each. "One of the things that's cool is, in the States I'm going to bring some Latin artists out on the road with me and do a bilingual sort of thing," she said. "They'll do their regular Spanish material, and then I do my thing, you know, whether I sing in English or Spanish or Portuguese, or play guitar."
Furtado's thinking about inviting the Puerto Rican reggaetón group and recent Latin Grammy winners Calle 13, since they did a remix of her "No Hay Igual," to fill one of those slots. "They're getting big now," she said.
So far, only the Canadian dates have been announced, but the tour will also hit the U.S., Japan and Australia along with Europe and Latin America.
The singer is playing a brace of radio holiday shows next month, and after the holidays she's got "lots" of rehearsals scheduled, so that the show can become a "full sensory experience." "Like, it really has a beginning, middle and end, and takes you on a journey," she said. "It's important to have a fun show that's interactive, where the crowd's involved. I always leave room for spontaneity and rawness, because those are my roots, you know? I started by doing club shows, and that's the energy I love, the raw club energy of just feeling like you're rocking out."
While she'll have a choreographer and four back-up dancers with her on the road, Furtado insists that there won't be any real choreography in the way you might expect with a large stage show. "The way I am with movement, it has to be all natural," she said. "It's a pretty music-based show. It's not about any one thing. There's visuals and movement, but music plays the hugest role. Everything else is just to keep it sophisticated and sensual and fun."
Furtado said she got a taste of what's to come during a recent gig in Mexico City, where the audience knew the words to all of her songs and were even able to guess what the next song would be. "I was overwhelmed with emotion," she said. "I was actually tearing up on stage. I had to get a grip! It got me really excited for next year.
"I love what I do for a living more than ever," she added. "I'm really happy in this place, and I hope to make music my whole life. I can't wait to bring the show to the fans and thank them for sticking with me this whole time."

Furtado To Record Duet With Minogue.
29th November 2006 06:56:21
Furtado To Record Duet With Minogue.... Nelly Furtado is set to set the charts alight again by recording a duet with Australian pop beauty Kylie Minogue.
The Promiscuous hitmaker was so delighted when Minogue won her much publicised battle with breast cancer earlier this year (06), she sees the upcoming track as a celebration.
She says, "We've been talking about it for a while. I can relate to her because she has this crazy work ethic like me, and I love the fact she went back and followed up her tour".
Minogue was diagnosed with breast cancer last year (05) in the middle of the homecoming leg of her Showgirls world tour, and was only able to reschedule the postponed dates this month (Nov06).

Nelly Furtado Fires Up Passion For Latin Music, Records Spanish LP
'I always wanted to be an international artist,' singer says.
by Jennifer Vineyard
NEW YORK — She's dabbled in it before, but now Nelly Furtado wants to go all the way — and why not, considering Christina Aguilera, Shakira and Jennifer Lopez have all done it? Record albums en Español, that is. "I'm in the midst of recording a Latin album," Furtado revealed when she stopped by the MTV offices Wednesday. "It's like, 'Wow, I'm writing a song in Spanish.' It's really bizarre, but really great."
Furtado, who grew up speaking Portuguese, didn't learn Spanish until she was in high school at age 14. Although she has sung a few songs in Spanish already (such as "Te Busqué" on Loose), this is the first time she's attempted to write songs in Spanish from scratch.
"I feel like a little kid again, because it's a whole new language," she said. "And I can't translate poetically yet. But Latin languages come easy to me. When I sing in them, it feels natural. It feels organic. I love rapping in Spanish, I love singing in Spanish. It just feels so good."
Still, the first time she attempted singing in Spanish, on her 2002 duet with Juanes, "Fotografí," she was worried that the reception wouldn't be so positive. "Right away, I was tentative," she said. "You don't want it to come off as a commercial attempt to gain a new audience. You don't want it to be fake."
Instead, the song was a hit in the Latin world and was named BMI Latin's Song of the Year. Encouraged, Furtado started putting more and more Spanish songs in her repertoire, especially while recording Loose, which also features the reggaetón-inspired "No Hay Igual" (see "Chris Martin Covers Jay-Z — And Other Scenes From Nelly Furtado's Loose").
"When I arrived in Miami, it was all about reggaetón," she said. "I arrived not knowing who Daddy Yankee was, to [now] loving Daddy Yankee. I love the music because it's so grassroots, so independent, so reflective of what's going on in the streets, so authentic. It's not taken over by the corporate world. It has fire. And it's great that a Spanish music is so popular right now in America, since it's the second language of this country. What I hear in reggaetón, the sexiness and the delivery, it just so feels so good."
For her Latin album, though, Furtado plans to include her previous songs in Spanish, a couple of translations of album tracks and B-sides, a few new original songs and a possible cover. For translations, she's focusing on her more acoustic, singer/songwriter tracks, such as "Try" from Folklore, and "In God's Hands" and "All Good Things (Come to an End)" from Loose. Musically, she's taking her cues from Portuguese and Brazilian music as well as Spanish, "so it's a nice fusion."
"It's definitely a different mood," she said. "It'll be a completely different style recording, with even the vocals mixed differently. It's taking on its own identity, a whole new character."
Furtado is working on the record until her tour starts February 16 in Manchester, United Kingdom, but even that won't stop her. "You can do a lot on the road, you know? Record anywhere you want. It's quite possible with portable studios," she said. For now, Furtado's tour takes her through Europe and Canada until the spring, at which point she'll play some U.S. dates and then hit a few other continents. "Justin [Timberlake] and I talked about touring Latin America or Asia or Australia together next year," she said. "It's all just kind of in the works" (see "Furtado Lines Up Special Guests: Timbaland, Chris Martin, Justin?").
"I'm excited," she added. "I always wanted to be an international artist, and it's more of a true artistic experience when you just let yourself go and not judge, and be a sponge. My parents listened to Julio Iglesias and stuff like that — bilingual, trilingual — and those types of artists were real icons."
