Smallville Stuntman Injured
Christopher Sayour, stunt coordinator and primary stuntman on the WB series Smallville, is in serious condition after falling from a tower during filming in Vancouver, B.C., on July 26, according to The Hollywood Reporter. During the filming of a stunt sequence, Sayour fell 37 feet and suffered "multiple fractures and internal injuries," the trade paper reported. An investigation by Canadian police determined that the fall was an accident and not caused by foul play.
In addition to his work on Smallville, Sayour has performed stunts in a number of feature films and series, including I, Robot, Star Trek: Nemesis and Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas. He also had small roles in The Time Machine, Batman & Robin and the SCI FI Channel original series Stargate SG-1. Production on Smallville was halted after the incident, but resumed on July 27.

Smallville Has Marsters And More
James Marsters, best known as the blond, British vampire Spike on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel, will be making a guest appearance in the upcoming season of Smallville, the WB network announced. At the Television Critics Press tour in Beverly Hills, Calif., Smallville star Tom Welling announced that Marsters would be playing a character from the original DC comic-book series. "Joining us this season will be another famous character from Superman lore, Milton Fine, also known as Brainiac," Welling told critics. "Brainiac, the ultimate villain, will be played by someone you are very familiar with, James Marsters of Angel, but this time without the British accent and the blond hair, which I'm kind of sad about, but we'll see."
In an interview with SCI FI Wire, executive producer Al Gough said that he and the other writers had been wanting to introduce the character for a while, and always had Marsters in mind for the role. "We always thought he was fantastic in Buffy and then in Angel, and he just felt like he'd be a good fit for this character," he said. "He was always sort of the first guy we wanted, and we met with him and told him the arc for what we wanted for Milton Fine as Brainiac."
Brainiac will be introduced as a college professor who tries to turn Clark against humanity, according to Gough. "He's a wonderful actor beyond being Spike, so I think he'll bring all of that to the role," he said. "We've talked about it, and what's nice is, he's going to be one of Clark's college professors. ... It's more of the grand seduction of Clark Kent rather than someone coming in and them throwing each other around. And I think James is really up for the challenge."

But Brainiac isn't the only character from the DC Comics universe who will be making an appearance in Smallville. Welling also announced the introduction of Aquaman, who will have a relationship with Lois Lane, played by Erica Durance. As an aside, Welling noted that Durance is terrified of the water, which "will be interesting on set." So far, there has been no announcement of who will be playing the character.
Gough admitted that he watches the HBO series Entourage, in which the main character is up for a role in a James Cameron-directed adaptation of Aquaman, but the producers of Smallville had already planned to bring on the character before the Entourage storyline aired. "We actually had planned to do [it], because there are only so many DC comics that they're not developing as movies that we've been allowed to [do]," Gough said. "We wanted Wonder Woman, we couldn't get her. We wanted Batman, we couldn't get him. So we got The Flash. And then we said, 'How about Aquaman?' He's a much maligned character. So for our show, we thought he's a great character to teach Clark, basically, to think globally. Our take on Aquaman at this point is that he's like an environmental activist, who teaches Clark that there's more to life than just Smallville and college and things like that."
The final Smallville-related announcement to come out of The WB's presentation was a future guest appearance by Tom Wopat, who co-starred with Smallville's John Schneider in 1980s television series The Dukes of Hazzard. Wopat will play a senator with undisclosed ties to Schneider's character. Smallville returns for a fifth season in the fall.

Welling Touts Smallville's 100th
Tom Welling, who stars as a young Clark Kent in The WB's Superman series Smallville, told reporters that the show's upcoming 100th episode will move Clark closer to his destiny than he's ever been before. "For us, it was a really exciting episode to shoot, because it's a turning point," Welling said in a news conference during the Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena, Calif., on Jan. 16. "I think from this episode on, this show is going to be very different from what it's been in the past. And I also think we're finally going to get to what I believe the audience wanted the show to be."
Welling said that the characters will be moving in new directions during the second half of the show's fifth season. "We're getting [to] a point in the series after five seasons, 100 episodes, where these characters are now saying, 'All right, look, we've been doing this for a couple of years now. Let's start moving forwards. Let's figure out why we're not getting along. Let's see if our relationship works,'" Welling said. "Or, in other cases, like Lex and Clark, 'You're not who I thought you were.'"
The upcoming 100th episode, titled "Reckoning," will also feature the death of one of the show's major characters. Welling was careful not to reveal the identity of the deceased, but did say that he would be sorry to see "that person" go. "I think it was bittersweet for that person themselves," he said. "Because I think they were looking forward to a little time off. But then, when the day came, that person was caught a few times on set just kind of looking around, going, 'Yeah, well, I guess this is it.'"
Although Welling and most of the other cast members were aware that one of the characters would be killed off, he said he had no idea who it would be until he read the script. "This show did a really good job, leading up to this episode, to not hint toward it at all," he said. "And when the death occurs in the 100th episode, it's a complete surprise to every single character. It's not something that Lex planned or that the audience may have known or have hints about in the future, like sometimes happens in episodic television. This is a complete surprise for everyone. And I literally didn't know who it was until I read the script."
Smallville returns with a new episode, "Lockdown," on Jan. 19 at 8 p.m. ET/PT. "Reckoning" will air the following Thursday.

Schneider Talks Smallville's 100th
John Schneider-whose character of Jonathan Kent played a key role in Smallville's 100th episode, which aired Jan. 26-told SCI FI Wire that he knew what was coming, but used his mixed emotions to fuel his performance. (Spoilers ahead!) In the episode, "Reckoning," Clark Kent (Tom Welling) watches as his father dies, fulfilling a prophecy from earlier in the season and preventing the death of Lana (Kristin Kreuk).
Schneider said in an interview that he was sorry to leave the show behind, but that he used those emotions in his final scenes with Welling. "It was very sad, which helped," Schneider said. "It really, really helped. The last scene I shot was pulling Clark out of the car when Lana had passed. ... I worked until 3:30 in the morning and it was probably 18 degrees. It was cold out there. But the last thing I did was that with Tom, which I think is very appropriate. The very last thing Jonathan Kent does in the show is tell him it's not his fault. So he's trying to protect him. The very last thing John Schneider did was pull [Clark] out of the vision of seeing Lana dead."
Schneider said that he was surprised to hear that his character would be killed off so soon this season. "[Co-creator and executive producer Al Gough] called me and said, 'Hey, John. This is a call I hate to have to make, but you kind of knew it was coming at some point,'" Schneider said in an interview at the Television Critics Association winter press tour last week. "'I said, 'Oh, I understand. When it's going to be?' I'm thinking, 'We're doing 24 shows this year. So it's going to be show 23, maybe?' No, it's show 12. And he'd called me during show nine."
From the standpoint of the story, Schneider said that he understands the need for his character to die in order for Clark to move forward toward his destiny as Superman. "It happens for great reasons," he said. "[He's] trying to live up to his father's expectations, or trying to fill the gap that was left, fill the void that was left by [the death]. The passing of Jonathan Kent in Clark Kent's life is, I think, what causes him to become Superman. Not just somebody with super powers. ... To me it was like John Wayne in The Cowboys, an empowering death, which is so important. Because if Jonathan Kent had just died, that would have been terrible. It would have been meaningless." Smallville airs on The WB Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
