Anna Nalick: Tour Talk
Pulling pranks, watching Blazing Saddles, and worrying about the cat back home.
by C. Bottomley
The 21-year-old singer-songwriter likes to turn her tours into gastronomic journies. She's tried cheese-steak in Philadelphia, pizza in Chicago, and turned down the green chili in New Mexico ("Too hot!"). She'd better get used to a varied menu, though. Her gorgeous album Wreck of the Day has made her a newcomer to watch. Nalick told us about her and her cat's appetite for the road.
Who was the best live show you ever saw?
B.B. King. That was actually my first concert. He came out and said, "At my age, I ought to be able to sit down." He sat and played and had this comfort level that I've actually never seen in anybody since. He looked like he belonged there. You immediately felt like you were in his living room.
What do you miss most about home when you're on the road?
My cat, Lexie. I think she's developed an eating disorder. She gets upset when I'm gone, so she eats. Every time I go home, she's a little bigger. She's small, but she's very fat and very fluffy. So she waddles now, like, Meow! She would be very embarrassed if she knew I was telling everybody about this. But Lexie is obese.
What do you have to have with you when you're on tour?
I wear this ring all the time. My dad made it. He promised me if I ever signed a contract, he'd make me some bling-bling. So when I signed my recording contract, he was the first person I called. I was like, "Whip out the tools, daddy!" It's a teal topaz. His birthstone is topaz and mine is aquamarine, so we found the in-between stone - it's a topaz the color of aquamarine - and he made it for me. I always wear it, but I need it when I'm onstage. It's like having my family there with me.
Do you have a pre-gig ritual?
My band and I will huddle together and say our piece. I try to have a little quiet time before I go onstage. Onstage, it's almost like there's this glass between me and everybody else. People forget that it's not a TV screen, and that I'm actually right there in front of them. Some people will say stuff from the audience and not realize you can hear them. Most of the time it's flattering. Other times not.
Have you pulled a prank on someone touring with you?
I pick on my band all the time. We work really hard to bother each other. We'll stick things in each other's bags. So Luis, my guitar player will go to open the lap steel case and there will be a pound of licorice in his lap steel case [laughs]. Or we'll collect all the hotel keys and stick them in somebody's bag.
What's the one DVD you bring with you?
Blazing Saddles is one of our favorites. We're all huge Mel Brooks fans in the band. I love it when Madeleine Kahn gets onstage and she's singing her song. [sings] "I'm tired ... tired of playing ze game." There's a guy in the audience with his feet up on the stage and she looks down and she says, "Hey cowboy, vot's your name?" "Tex, ma'am." "Well, Tex Ma'am, are you in show business?" He says, "No, ma'am." She says, "Vell, then get your frigging feet off my stage!" That always makes me laugh.

Anna Nalick bio
Her love of the Cranberries, John Mayer, and
Fiona Apple is easy to hear when one listens to the poignant music of singer/songwriter Anna Nalick, but it's her beloved Blind Melon that had the most impact on her career. The California native had been recording demos on a cheap cassette recorder when one of her tapes ended up in the hands of former Blind Melon members Christopher Thorn and Brad Smith. The two were now a production team and with Eric Rosse -- a producer who had worked with another Nalick fave, Tori Amos -- they re-recorded her home demos in a professional studio. Two weeks later, Columbia Records contacted Nalick with an offer and soon college was put on hold. With an all-star cast of studio musicians, the 20-year-old recorded her debut, Wreck of the Day, released in April of 2005.

Update from Anna!
6.14.05 - Anna's newest tour journal entry.
"These first few days on the road with the Wallflowers have been really great, although, a little surreal. It seems like only yesterday I was 13 and warming up to Bringing Down The Horse in my ballet class. Or just last week I was a Freshman at my Catholic all-girls school with my friend Mimi who had a massive crush on Jacob Dylan. Now here I am opening for him only a few years later and having an amazing time..."

Local radio stations check holiday shows off their wish lists
By Julie Seabaugh
Published: Wednesday, December 14, 2005
Pop singer-songwriter Anna Nalick stands in a hotel parking lot somewhere in Des Moines, giddily clutching an armload of cold white powder. "I only experienced snow for the first time last November, and now I'm obsessed," the California native explains via cell phone. "It's really putting me in the holiday spirit."
Seems it's that time of year: The first snowfall, the eggnog hangovers - and the annual onslaught of holiday shows presented by local radio stations. From coast to coast, FM powerhouses are decking their local concert halls. And while ticket holders may view the events as just another opportunity to rock out (albeit rockin' out while wearing reindeer antlers), it's a different story for those behind the scenes. Logistics for holiday shows are trickier, promotion is more intense, and lineups must coax audiences away from stuffing their stockings and roasting their chestnuts to brave long lines and freezing temperatures.
The River (101.1 FM) has presented seasonal shows for the past eleven years, first at Westport Playhouse and then, beginning in 2000, at the newly opened Pageant. Program director Marty Linck cites booking bands as the biggest challenge for the station's "River of Toys" show. "I have to start calling around in June," Linck says. "I'll go after about 30 bands knowing that most aren't going to work out based on how their tours are routed."
The Point (105.7 FM), meanwhile, begins booking its "HoHo Shows" in August or September. "We try to find a date that works for the headliner and build around it," says marketing and promotions director Kyle Guderian. "Because Fall Out Boy was available on the twentieth [of December], the rest fits into place after that."
Purple Ranger 14 - December 15, 2005 06:06 PM (GMT)
The Point also lucked out this year by booking artists already traveling to other holiday shows as they normally do for months-long regular tours: via bus. For some events, bookings can hinge on whether stations arrange and cover artists' travel and lodging, as they typically fly in and out within twenty-four hours for the one-off show dates.
"It's a lot of flying," says Nalick, who boasts four such shows on her December itinerary, including Saturday's "River of Toys" show. "The air on the planes is so dry, it makes it hard to sing when you get there. But the advantages are that you get exposure, you meet a lot of different artists, and you meet the people at the radio stations who play your songs."
Nalick has been on tour for more than a year in support of her April debut, Wreck of the Day, and she estimates that nearly half those dates have been radio shows. "I think it's important to say thank you," she says of DJs who continue to spin her hit single "Breathe (2 AM)," which has ultimately propelled Wreck to gold-selling status.
In turn, stations view the concerts as thank-yous for continuous audience support. "The bands will show their appreciation for all we do by playing for cheaper, and we pass the savings on," Linck says. "It's cool to have 2,000 of your listeners seeing five bands for cheaper than they'd pay to see them separately." (Linck estimates that when the River has to cover travel expenses, it pays artists half of what they would normally earn from a concert.)
Mattern says his station merely agrees to pay artists' required talent fees - no travel costs, no ongoing negotiations. "It's not like we say, 'I'll spin your record if you give me a favor or drop the price on the show a little bit,'" he explains.
Purple Ranger 14 - December 15, 2005 06:07 PM (GMT)
Bassist Michael Todd of the emo-prog quartet Coheed and Cambria (which performs Tuesday at the Point's second "Ho Ho Show" of the season) confirms that their holiday-show paycheck isn't "too different from a regular show. We're on a medium-level, but I've heard it gets blown up for bigger bands."
What blows up must also be stripped down, however, as shorter sets, shared equipment, cramped backstage areas and less-elaborate stage productions become the norm when several groups of musicians share a holiday bill. For example, Coheed and Cambria have toured for three months behind Good Apollo I'm Burning Star IV, Vol. 1: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness, the third album chronicling lead singer Claudio Sanchez's sci-fi tale of two doomed lovers and their equally doomed offspring. The band's elaborate stage set includes a working version of the winged guillotine featured in Apollo's liner notes, but owing to time and space constraints, the piece is conspicuously absent during their half-dozen holiday gigs.
Fans may take issue when favorite musicians play truncated sets, but an upside remains to the keep-'em-moving mentality: When more artists share a bill, the likelihood audiences will discover new talent to embrace grows exponentially.
"A station has the opportunity to introduce a developing artist to an audience, such as in the case of British sensation Joss Stone on the River of Toys 2004 bill. She stole the show," says Jesse Raya, public relations and marketing director of the Pageant. "[This year] they're introducing St. Louis to British newcomer Natasha Bedingfield, a huge star in the UK looking to make her mark in America."
Purple Ranger 14 - December 15, 2005 06:08 PM (GMT)
With most of the Point's holiday-show bands already on tour, program director Tommy
Raya also says the high volume of tickets sold for holiday shows is a trend that rarely wanes: "Once the shows are announced, tickets sell out pretty quickly, sometimes within days, others within hours of the event going on sale." But relatively cheap tickets and a wide variety of bands - not to mention heavy on-air promotion - aren't the only reason holiday shows tend to sell out quickly (Coheed's HoHo show did so in an hour).
"Right now there aren't a lot of other shows out there," says the Point's Guderian, alluding to the reduced number of shows bands play late in the year so members can spend time with their own friends and families. "December is kind of a dry concert season, so that contributes to shows' success when the concert dollar isn't spread out all over the place.
"No one's making bags of money on these shows, that's for sure," Guderian continues. "We just try to put together a good show for our listeners. Other than that, it's all about everyone enjoying one great, final, blowout concert of the year."

Yay, I won, I won!!! So I'm the best female, eh? How exciting. I actually thought it would be Ms. Crow, so when they called my name I didn't have time to put my shoes back on and I had to run to the stage so they wouldn't think I wasn't there and skip over my speech time. What an honor, but the most amazing part was that it gave me a chance to thank the radio promotion staff at Columbia (the people who took me to all your local radio stations so you could hear me tell stories and then get to know my song.) They are essential to the radio side and they have always been very dedicated to the "Nalick Project." So I dedicate my shiny new award to them.
And I'm so glad you liked my dress. It came from BCBG and luckily I already had it in my closet so I didn't have to buy a new one. And the jewelry is from Express, so if you like it...go buy it for yourself. I'm my own stylist, so if you need tips...call me! And didn't my boys (ahem, my band) look fantastic?! They are so cute I could just pinch them!
By the way, if you were to spend a day with me (recently) it would go as follows....
11:00AM- wake up
11:05- fall back asleep
2:00-wake up and put on finest soccer-mom outfit
2:10- pick up a grande pumpkin spice latte with no whip and drive to the mall to finish Christmas shopping and enjoy pumpkin smoothie at secret location
5:00- cuss at southern California traffic
6:30-finally get home and organize receipts and gifts
7:00-answer mail, pay bills, write back to fans (in particular ones who leave names and self addressed and stamped envelopes...my favorite)
8:30- read a little, write a little, sing a little, paint a little
11:00pm- realize I haven't taken a shower yet...put it off till tomorrow
11:01-realize I'm starving
11:02- realize there is no food in my house
11:03-See if parents are home
11:10- eat a salad and read some more
11:30- apologize for calling my sister so late and make up something important to talk about
12:30- read emails and rely on fans to entertain me for a flip
1:00- cuddle with Lexi
1:30- write some more
2:30- go home, feed stray cats, and clean room
3:00- work out on home gym while watching a Disney movie
4:30- decide a shower really can't wait
5:00- go to sleep
Terribly exciting, I know.

Good Morning
12.11.06
Good Mornin', I just got back into the USA last night and despite my suitcase not showing up till today,it was an uneventful flight. The trip to Dublin was fun. George Michael puts on a fabulous show and the audience both nights I was there was just incredible. He had everybody waving their hands and cellphones. And we spent most of the time in an area called Temple Bar which is the most lovely little lit up area of shopping and gaiety. It was fun going to sleep every night...or rather being awake all night listening to young men in large groups singing songs on their way home and young ladies with those pretty accents telling their gentlemen to quiet down. I tasted the Guinness and bought some fun souvenirs to bring home to the family. I hope to go back soon...I have a feeling the next record will take me farther in distance than the last...and I'd like to see the Irish countryside. I hope no one will be offended that the trip has made me want to watch Lord of the Rings, for a few young Irish cuties reminded me of the two little blonde friends of Young Baggins. An attractive group, those Irish folks are. I think I'm about a fourth Irish or more. Perhaps that's where I got my spunk. But like most Americans I'm a mutt. Irish, English, and Russian. Smashley, I'm sorry to hear about your kitty.
Sick kitties are such a shame.

Happy New Year!
01.04.07
Happy New Year everybody. Sorry I'm late, but I do typically wait till a few hours past midnight to come downstairs so that everybody is long past all the kissing and hugging. I just save a few hugs for friends and a special kiss for one.
Have you come up with your resolutions? Does anybody else want to make a killer record, go platinum, travel to far away places spreading good music, and eventually get a bigger bus or two?
Actually, I don't really make resolutions. I think it's strange to wait till a specific day to start bettering myself.
Have you heard the new song by KT Tunstall? "Suddenly I See." I really like it. She does such a fantastic job of describing that girl that everyone is looking at so that I think I know exactly who she's talking about. And the song itself is great.
Karuca, I'm sorry to hear about your kitty. I stuck my bottom lip out and everything when I read your post. All kitties should live forever.
I'd like to thank everyone who sent me Holiday wishes. I actually have a thank you card for you, Ned, but it'll have to wait till I see you next. I do love your gift though. You are such a sweetheart.
Well, I've written some new stuff and my short term goal...like the next 3 days...is to finish it. So, I bid thee farewell.

1.19.07 - Reading and Movies
Category: Blogging
I just finished reading Gulliver's Travels by Jonathan Swift. The idea came to me that I should read it when I was in Dublin and read several plaques and stories in his honor. It's been a fun and interesting read. I must admit I was surprised by how it ended. I would have expected a full account of the affects of ALL of his travels on his personality, but it only describes how he became sort of nasty to his family in the last five years because of his experiences in the last land he visited. But I suppose that that is because it's written like an account of past travels, sort of like a journal in a way...and I'm always the most affected by my most recent adventures. But I needed more closure, damn it! Also, the version I read didn't include a political meaning behind everything and I think that is the only way to get the very most out of the story. Swift had more to say than what I can figure out on my own as an American girl born a few hundred years after he wrote this book. I'll have to study up now. And other than reading, I've been busy in a little rehearsal studio with my Boys, arranging songs for the new record. So that's what I do all day and at night I read. I haven't had a TV in my house for 3 months and I don't miss it. The only problem being that I'm behind on some important world issues. For example, its important that I and everyone start paying attention to who is running for what right now because I think the next election is very important for our country. I'm not usually one to get politically vocal because I like my music to be the sole focus, but I do encourage people who read this to start snooping around the papers or news programs because for those of us who can vote, it does count and I want to always live in a country I feel safe and really believe in. So let's educate ourselves.
Last I want to tell you that I've been going through the closet full of boxes of tour stuff I've collected that I do intend to put into scrap books...probably when I retire when I'm 90 and then die before I can enjoy them and my grandkids are so tired of waiting for me to finish them that they don't even care that Granny used to be kinda famous once...but as I go though the photos and letters, I think of all of you that I met in the last few years, those of you that I've spent some time talking to in particular because then I remember better, and I just want you to know that although we don't always know each other that well, I miss you guys and I look forward to seeing you all again when my road life starts back up.
Anybody read anything great lately? I'm looking at maybe reading the series that includes The Other Boleyn Girl because they're making a movie of it and I wanna read the book first.
And speaking of movies, Bad Ronald's dad is in a movie out called Arthur and the Invisibles. He is the grandfather of the little boy and you can see Bad Ronald Sr. as a cartoon and in real life. And in the movie he is married to Mia Farrow which I love because she played Daisy in the movie of The Great Gatsby, one of my very favorite stories. You may have heard about this kids movie because Madonna is in it as the voice of a character and she's been promoting it. David Bowie also plays the bad guy voice and even has a scene with BR's Daddy. I've had a crush on Bowie since he was the king of the goblins, by the way. But only BR Sr. comes to life so you can see the strong family resemblance and get a glimpse of how ridiculously cute Bad Ronald's gonna be when he grows up. That's all folks!

I wish I had exciting things to tell you, but I'm afraid things have been rather slow in my house. I'm writing songs and still making some big kid decisions about my second record. I've gotten into reading and watching Tennessee Williams' work. I've always loved "A Streetcar Named Desire" and I recently watched "Sweet Bird of Youth" and was very touched by it. I love Tennessee Williams for the same reasons I love F. Scott Fitzgerald. They have such insight into human emotions and the things that eat at people. Death, aging, loss, love, secrets, and a past that won't stay there, and always with a lesson. However not always with a happy ending, Williams' stories often leave you hanging, which I like, because all stories show only a period of time, so the outcome is only temporary. I also started reading a book on Walt Disney and at the same time I'm reading The Tempest by Shakespeare...of course.
So, to answer your questions...
I prefer extra crunchy peanut butter. If I was in a room with nothing but myself I would find some way to write on the walls and I'd keep myself entertained or long enough to lose my sanity. I write all my songs in my head first, so I'd be okay.
The strangest place I've ever heard my song was on youtube as a dance mix in a club. It sounds like when I mess around with it in rehearsals. But I'm honored. Girl, get yo Breathe on!
I joined my first band at 15 and quit at 18.
The last thing I ate was a bite of someone else's salad...and I realize I need new lettuce.
I was 15 when I had my first kiss.
Currently in my fridge there is not much. Some Dasani, veggies, Grapples (apples that smell like grapes and are really sweet), condiments that I'll probably never use, vanilla chai creamer, milk, and Special K bars cause I like them cold. Oh, and raspberry Jell-o. I hate the raspberry. I only like strawberry.
So what would you all like to hear more of on the next record? You guys are the important ones here.

So I'm dating young Wills, eh. Saw it on The message board. Yes, I see the resemblance between Ms. Kate and I. Of course I was in England not too long ago and I never said with whom.??????? But if I were to choose purely based on my type...I think I'd like Prince Harry. He looks like fun. Maybe the trouble maker of the two.
Anyhow, their Grandma is on my list of people I'd love to meet. And speaking of that, I met m first off of that list just a few days ago. I met Mr. Mel Brooks. I was very nervous actually, but he was so gracious and sweet. I met Dick Van Patten on the same day and I told him how my brother and I used to get in trouble at fancy Catholic Masses because we would recite "Mass in the New Latin. Oh Ord-lay, ive-us-gay Or-yay essings-blay. Amen-ay." That was one of his lines in Robin Hood Men In Tights. When I was 9 Mel Brooks gave me a signed $5 bill. I still have it. It was quite a memorable day for me meeting those gentlemen.
Hey! What's new in Australia? I saw some folks on the message board are working on getting my music out there. What an honor. I know there are a number of great singer songwriter chicks who originated in Australia. You folks have great taste! How about a few more questions?
Favorite flower?
Orchid...also daffodils...and very dark red roses
Candy Bar?
A Snickers/Almond Joy hybrid would make me very happy.
Favorite strange combination?
I love drinking cold chocolate milk in a bubble bath. I've also heard of beer in the shower. That sounds icky to me.
Favorite new music? (it only has to be new to you)
Lily Allen...Love her! I'm into the European girl singers right now.
Jem and Regina Spektor too, but Lily is my favorite. She's naughty!
Great news you'd like to share?
I'm gonna save mine for the next entry so no one copies me.

03.31.07 - Good news!
03.31.07
So, I turned 23. Still feel 17 except for when I feel 80. Still act 5.And speaking of that, I celebrated at Disneyland with a reservation at the Blue Bayou...the restaurant in the Pirates of the Caribbean. It was a blast and if you were at the park too and saw a girl in a giant sparkly crown and a fluffy skirt...that was me. Yeah, you feel bad for making fun of that girl now, huh?!
So, what is my good news? It's been killing me to keep you waiting to hear what I'm doing. I had some business to take care of before I could spread the word, but now that that's out of the way, here it is. I'm in the studio officially now. (Also took a while due to some biz-nas) I chose a producer called Mike Flynn. He produced The Fray, who put out my favorite album of last year. The songs are ready and I'm still adding more. I think this album is going to be wicked cool! I can't wait for it to be finished...but it will still be a little while before you can hear anything. The songs are about my experiences on the road (in a very anybody-could-relate kind of way) and about my loves and hates and even some about you...or some of you...but I'll never tell who. I mean I don't say, "Spunky moose is the moose of the day and Mer smells almost as good as New England Karen/ Little Karen is Little and cute and little/ Bananahead once said he's no longer a superfan just a regular fan/ but that's okay it's not tearin'...me apart anymore." But you do make an appearance.
Anyhow, I'll keep you posted on new changes now.
