Shrek 3 Plot Unveiled
Jeffrey Katzenberg, executive producer of the Shrek films, told SCI FI Wire that the upcoming third installment will focus on finding a new king of Far, Far Away, following the transformation of the last one into a toad. "When Shrek 3 opens, Shrek [voiced by Mike Myers] and Fiona [Cameron Diaz] are having to take on the duties of being the acting king and queen," Katzenberg said in an interview. "If you remember when we left them, the king [John Cleese] was quite literally croaking. They're not very comfortable in these roles as the king and queen of the kingdom of Far, Far Away, so the king says to them, 'If you can find the heir to the throne and bring him back so that the kingdom will be in good hands, then you can return to the swamp and live your lives,' which is what they want to do."
Katzenberg said that Shrek 3 will also include Puss in Boots, whom Antonio Banderas voiced in Shrek 2, as well as a new character, voiced by singer Justin Timberlake. "Shrek, Donkey and Puss go to the far side of the kingdom of Far, Far Away, which is far away, if you can imagine, where young Artie, ... the nephew of Queen Lillian, is about to graduate from school," Katzenberg said. "Artie turns out to be young King Arthur, and Shrek and Donkey and Puss have to convince this extremely rebellious young man, who's being voiced by Justin Timberlake, to come back and assume the throne."
Katzenberg added that Shrek 3 will feature many of the same kinds of references and literary in-jokes that made the first two films successful. "Along the way, Shrek invents the Round Table [and] chivalry; Donkey is the Lady in the Lake with the sword. You get it," he said. "Meanwhile, back at the kingdom of Far, Far Away, Prince Charming decides that it's time for a coup d'etat. The cat's away, he will play, and so Fiona organizes all of the princesses into the resistance movement, the underground, who are trying to hold things together until Shrek, Donkey, Puss and young King Arthur return." Shrek 3 is scheduled for release May 18, 2007.

ABC To Air Shrek Holiday Show
ABC will air Shrek the Halls, an original animated special from DreamWorks Animation SKG based on the hit Shrek movies, in December. ABC is developing the half-hour special as a perennial holiday entertainment.
Shrek the Halls features Shrek (Mike Myers), Fiona (Cameron Diaz), Donkey (Eddie Murphy), Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) and their fairy-tale buddies in a story that puts a twist on holiday traditions. The special will be directed by Gary Trousdale (Beauty and the Beast) and produced by Teresa Cheng (Madagascar) and Gina Shay (The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie).
Meanwhile, ABC said it will air the broadcast television premiere of Shrek 2 at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Nov. 24.

Cameron Diaz won't be seen onscreen in 2007, but she will be part of one of next year's biggest movies. If you can't figure out the riddle, here's a clue: The flick's success might make Diaz shriek, or it might even make her Shrek. "I love that people enjoy those films," she said of "Shrek the Third," due in theaters in May. "Certain characters they have down, like Shrek and Fiona, and every time, I think [the filmmakers] really strive to make a good statement — a solid, informed, good statement that's uplifting." The next film's statement will include Shrek inheriting the land of Far, Far Away — but not if he can recruit Donkey (Eddie Murphy), Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) and Fiona (Diaz) to help him stay in his beloved swamp and install ne'er-do-well King Arthur, voiced by Diaz's boyfriend, Justin Timberlake. "It's going to be fun," she promised. "They just do a better job every time." ...

"Shrek The Third" (Paramount Pictures)
Take a look at the box-office reports for the weekend and you'll likely see an animated film at or near the top. Never mind which film. Never mind which weekend.
It's been that kind of year for fans of animation, with "Cars," "Ice Age: The Meltdown," "Over the Hedge" and "Happy Feet" all cracking $100 million domestically, and "Open Season," "Monster House" and "Barnyard" right behind them. Sure, most of those films are about animals, but animation doesn't have to be — it's the most flexible of all the filmmaking methods.
Walt Disney once said, "If you can dream it, you can do it." Here are the 10 dreams we're looking forward to in 2007:
10. "Surf's Up"
Before you groan at the prospect of another penguin movie (and we feel your pain), consider that this one is told as a mockumentary. It's "Spinal Tap" meets "Happy Feet," with a story that suggests that penguins invented surfing. The trailer for "Surf's Up" was one of the best of 2006.
9. "Meet the Robinsons"
Remarkably, this is the 46th feature from Walt Disney Studios — what a weird, wild trip it's been since "Snow White." "Meet the Robinsons" follows Lewis, an introverted inventor, as he's whisked to the future to hunt the Bowler Hat Guy and save the world. Social outcast? Check. Missing parents? Check. Rollicking adventure wherein our hero discovers the importance of family? Check. Yup, this one's a Disney film.
8. "Aqua Teen Hunger Force: The Movie"
Concerned about the escalating costs of Hollywood films? Try making one for under $1 million. Master Shake, Frylock and Meatwad team up for a low-budget, big-screen adaptation of their popular Adult Swim cartoon. Here's hoping the filmmakers don't water down their aggressive, mean-spirited humor to capture a larger audience.
7. "TMNT"
They may eat pizza covered in marshmallows and shout "Cowabunga," but while Michaelangelo, Raphael, Donatello and Leonardo are stuck in perpetual adolescence, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' story is about to get all grown-up. The first film in the popular franchise in 14 years, "TMNT" promises a darker, grittier re-imagining of the titular turtles. All shell breaks loose March 23 (see "New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Flick: Slightly Less Pizza, A Lot Less Cheese").
6. "Enchanted"
Has Disney gotten self-aware? A live-action/animation hybrid, "Enchanted" follows a fairy-tale princess (Amy Adams) banished to the real world, where she'll learn whether or not all stories end "happily ever after." It may poke fun at Disney's past, but the talent behind the music is no laughing matter: Eight-time Academy Award-winner Alan Menken ("Aladdin," "The Little Mermaid," "Beauty and the Beast") teams with Broadway legend Stephen Schwartz ("Pippin," "Godspell"). It doesn't take a magic mirror to predict that we'll be humming their songs all the way to next year's Oscars.
5. "Beowulf"
First Gollum and Davy Jones, and now Grendel? "Violent and very, very weird" is how co-writer Neil Gaiman describes his adaptation of the Old English classic, starring Angelina Jolie and directed by Robert Zemeckis with the same motion-capture technology pioneered on "The Polar Express." How do you get moviegoers interested in a 1,000-year-old epic poem? How about by making it NC-17? Filmmakers are currently debating simultaneously releasing two versions of the film (NC-17 and PG-13) when it hits theaters in November.
4. "Bee Movie"
Jerry Seinfeld starred in the most popular sitcom of the '90s and ended the show at its height. Now he's a bee in an animated film? Get out! Co-written by Seinfeld, the movie centers on a war between bees and humans — a big departure for a man whose show was famous for being about nothing. "Bee Movie" opens November 2.
3. "The Simpsons Movie"
How many times do you think Bart scribbled "We will not cash in on 'The Simpsons' until we have a great film idea" on the blackboard after school? A movie based on the longest-running sitcom in television history is the biggest no-brainer in animation. With legal eagle Erin Brockovich confirmed as a voice, early plot speculation has it that C. Montgomery Burns and his nuclear power plant will play a large role. Excellent!
2. "Shrek the Third"
Good things for this movie come in threes: There's Shrek, Donkey and Puss in Boots, who together must convince young Prince Artie (Justin Timberlake) to take the crown in Far Far Away. Then there are appearances from Snow White, Sleeping Beauty and Rapunzel (the "SNL" triumvirate of Amy Poehler, Cheri Oteri and Maya Rudolph, respectively), who join Fiona to fight off a coup from Prince Charming. This one's a guaranteed hit — the only thing greener than Shrek is the money the franchise continues to rake in.
1. "Ratatouille"
Remember the last time Pixar made a bad movie? Yeah, neither do we. "Ratatouille" reteams the wizards behind "Cars" and "Toy Story" with "The Incredibles" director Brad Bird for the story of a Parisian rat who dreams of becoming a chef. Will it make Patton Oswalt (the voice of Remy) a household name? Inspire a love of French cuisine? One thing's for sure: It'll be competing for best animated film at the Oscars come 2008.

'Shrek The Third' Details! Nerdy Justin, Killer Princesses, Ogre Babies And More
MTV News gets a sneak peek at highly anticipated sequel — so watch out for ogre-size spoilers.

REDWOOD CITY, California — He's big, he's green, he's somehow Scottish, and this summer he's back for thirds.
MTV News got an up-close look at "Shrek the Third" at DreamWorks Animation studios, where we were shown scenes from some of the film's more spectacular moments. Read about what we saw below, but beware: There are ogre-size spoilers ahead.
Once Upon A Time
"Shrek the Third" begins "a couple weeks" after the end of "Shrek 2," said director Chris Miller, with Shrek (Mike Myers), Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz), Donkey (Eddie Murphy) and Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) still holed up at the king's royal palace in the land of Far Far Away. After a rude awakening by Donkey and his half-dragon kids, Puss arrives to give Shrek the lowdown on his responsibilities for the day, which — because the Frog King has recently taken ill — include knighting a squire (Shrek winds up overdoing it, leaving the sword in the poor man's shoulder); christening a boat (which Shrek manages to both sink and set on fire); and attending a royal banquet (which ends in total disaster after a dressed-up Shrek asks an attendant to scratch his butt, setting off a chain reaction that destroys the hall). Like the first two movies, this opening sequence is told as a quick-cut montage, with Shrek doing his eager best only to wind up foiled by his nature.
The action slows down a bit with a scene between Shrek and Fiona back in bed, the two exhausted by the day's activities. Showing otherworldly patience, Fiona tells Shrek that these duties will soon be over, that before long they can return to their home in the swamp, where — she coyly suggests — it would be nice to hear the pitter-patter of tiny, little ogre feet. Shrek wants none of it. "You ever see an ogre baby?" he asks. "They extra cry and extra poop!" It's at this moment that the couple is interrupted once again. "Well, somebody better be dying," Shrek snarls.
The Frog Funeral
It turns out King Harold is about to, well, croak. Before he leaves the mortal coil, he asks Shrek to assume the responsibilities of leading the kingdom, although he does let slip that there's another possible heir, Fiona's younger cousin Artie (Justin Timberlake). Finding the young chap seems ideal to Shrek, and soon our heroic trio are off to set sail for "Wor-Ces-Ter-Shire." The long goodbye at the dock is Puss' finest early moment — the intrepid feline is flanked by a dozen stray cats, all of whom he calls the "love of [his] life." With the boat slipping away, Fiona finally gathers the courage to tell her husband the news: "Shrek, you're going to be a ... " but is interrupted by the sound of the boat's bullhorn (actually a Viking distress horn). Finally she's able to blurt it out. "I'm pregnant." Donkey: "I'm going to be an Uncle!" Puss: "Shrek, you're ... " honk!
Meanwhile, Trouble Brews
Entering the Poison Apple Bar, Prince Charming orders "fuzzy navels for everyone!" Just when it looks like Charming is about to be jumped for not belonging, he makes the patrons an offer they can't refuse. "Once upon a time, someone decided that we were losers," he exclaims, telling the Ugly Stepsister, Evil Witches, Captain Hook and Rumpelstiltskin that they can all find their "happily ever after" if only they'd follow him and overthrow the kingdom.
Medieval Times
"Where are we?" Donkey asks. "Well, my palms are sweaty ... this must be high school," Shrek deadpans. They've reached the end of the road in their search for Artie, only to discover that the boy is a complete loser and at the bottom of the high school food chain. (Shrek mistakenly thinks the strapping Lancelot is the boy they're after, not the nerdy runt Lancelot creams in a jousting contest.) Shrek finally convinces Arthur during a school pep rally, when Arthur realizes the opportunity to go from zero to hero is too good to pass up.
Princess Party
The princesses of Far Far Away throw a baby shower, where Snow White gives Fiona a dwarf to help out with the chores ("Don't worry, I've got six more"), but they are soon interrupted by Prince Charming's palace coup. (He and the other fairy-tale villains fly in on an armada of witches' brooms.) When the princesses escape to underground catacombs, Charming questions the Gingerbread Man, Pinocchio, the Big Bad Wolf and the Three Little Pigs. This leads to the funniest moment from the screened footage when Gingy, questioned by Captain Hook with his menacing claw, has his life rapidly flash before his eyes. The quick montage includes shots of him being baked, growing up, getting tortured by Lord Farquaad and driving a candy car through a candy-land street.
The Magic Factory
In scenes that were shown as storyboards, we revisit Shrek back on the boat, where he's regaling Artie with visions of what to expect as king. Unfortunately, this makes Artie jittery, and the two heroes are soon fighting for control of the boat. Before long, it crashes on a deserted beach. With Puss and Donkey in tow, the guys venture into the wilderness where they find a tiny shack, inhabited by none other than Artie's old teacher Merlin (a hermit in his old age after a messy divorce from the Fairy Godmother). After discovering that they have a lot in common ("Arthur is very much like Shrek in this film," Miller said) and deciding to face their challenges head-on, the pair convince Merlin to transport them back to ...
Go Go Away?
The fairytale land has been completely overrun by Charming's minions, who have captured the princesses and locked them in a castle dungeon. What's worse, Merlin's magic was spotty, and Puss and Donkey find their bodies have been switched. Shrek learns that Charming is going to rewrite fairytale history by staging a play in which he slays the terrible ogre, and before Shrek can stop him, the green guy is captured and placed in chains beneath the stage. Meanwhile, Fiona convinces the other princesses to be proactive in their stories and escape from the dungeon to help rescue Shrek. This leads to another hilarious scene — Snow White sings a peaceful melody (which attracts all manner of woodland creatures, of course) only to segue into Led Zeppelin's "Immigrant Song," sending the lil' guys off to slay the palace guards.
Happily Ever After?
Will Fiona and the princesses rescue Shrek? Will the boy who would be king claim his rightful throne? Can little baby Shrek vomit any more profusely?
Well, you didn't think we'd tell you everything, did you?
"Shrek the Third" opens May 18.
