My sister and I have always been close, even though we are 10 years apart in age. She was like a second mother to me in some ways, and always my best friend. We would go out to movies and the park together when I was young, and longer and more "interesting" trips as I got older. I followed her like a little lost puppy whenever I had the chance. She would get ready to go somewhere, and I would be on her heels asking if I could come along.
On one of these nights that she was getting ready to leave, I went through me whole "where ya going? whatcha doing? Can I come too?" routines, and she kept saying I couldn't come.
"But why not?", I persisted, using my best pathetic look.
"Because Tammy and I are going out."
"But I got to go with you and Tammy BEFORE!!", I pleaded.
"Not this time, sis. You wouldn't like where we're going."
"Where's that?", I asked, still trying to convince her that I would be heartbroken if she left without me.
"It will scare you."
"I'm not scared of ANYTHING.", I said, puffing up and trying to look tough.
My sister laughed and said, "Are you sure about that? I swear you're scared of your own shadow!" She was right, but hey, I wouldn't admit to it. I just wanted to go with them.
"If I promise not to be scared will you tell me where you're going?"
"Tammy and I are going out to Owatonna to check out the glowing grave."
She had told me the story many times, about a headstone that is supposed to glow a yellowish green when the sky is clear and the moon is full. I had thought it was all just a story, and intrigued by it. "I want to see it too! I promise I won't get scared, and if I do, I'll just go back to the car."
"Mom will KILL me if she finds out I took you out there, you know how she gets."
"So we just don't tell her.", I said, a little grin creeping across my face. I could see that she was breaking down. Any minute now and....
"Fine, you can come, but you have to stay in the car."
I jumped up and squealed with joy, happy that I could go. After all, I didn't care that I had to stay in the car when we got there, it was a long drive, and I'd be spending time with my sister.
When Tammy showed up we all piled into the car, my mom asking where we were going. "To the movies mom... we'll be back late", my sister said
"Not too late," said my mom, "your sister needs to go to bed earlier than you."
"Okay mom!" my sister and I replied in unison.
The drive was uneventful, my sister and Tammy sitting up front, talking about boys and school and everything else that was coming to their heads. The radio was playing, and we were having fun.
When we got to the cemetery, my sister and Tammy got out to start exploring. "Stay here and listen to the radio, Okay? We will be back in just a couple minutes." said my sister.
So I sat. And sat. And sat. I don't know how much time had passed, but I had listened to at least 6 songs, and listened to the DJ banter on and on about the contests and promotions that they were doing at the station. "Man, I'm bored." I thought to myself. "I wonder what's taking them so long."
Curiosity has always been my weak point, so, tiring of sitting in the car, I decided to go look for them.
It was very dark, I soon realized after getting a few feet from the car's headlights. Very dark indeed. Crickets were chirping all through the weeds, and the air was crisp and cold. I had to watch my step, because I had never been out here before, and the headstones and tree roots seemed to jump out at me. I headed towards the mausoleum, that being the largest feature that I could just barely see in the darkness. Owls hooted suddenly and frightened me, making me trip and fall flat on my face.
"Are you okay?" came a male voice.
I screamed, louder than I think I've screamed ever before or ever since.
"Shh... Its okay" the male voice said, somewhat laughing. I looked around, trying to see who was talking and saw him step in a little. He was a tall man, soft features, and had the most beautiful blue eyes I had ever seen, and long dark hair tied up in a ponytail.
"Who are you?" I asked, my fears calming a little. "I'll scream again and get my sister over here if you try anything!"
The man bent down and brushed the dirt off of my knee, looking to see if I was alright. "Don't worry, I wont hurt you. Name's Jason. Tammy and your sister are my friends. I thought they told you to stay in the car?"
Relieved that he was a friend, I got up and leaned on the nearest headstone. "They did, but I got tired of waiting."
"Well, lets go get them then, so you can go home. Watch your step this time, okay?", he said and started walking away towards a large clump of trees at the far end of the cemetery. I followed him as best I could, limping a little and trying to dodge the various obstacles in my way. He walked so easily through here, so graceful, I was jealous.
Jason managed to get quite a way in front of me, I could just barely see him as he reached a lifesized angel statue. "Over here.", he said, and stepped behind the statue.
I reached the statue, winded and sore and looked around. I couldn't see Jason, but I did see Tammy and my sister, sitting a few feet away. They heard me coming and turned to look.
"I thought I told you to stay in the car." said my sister, looking at me more closely, pointing to my scuffed pants. "And what happened to you?"
"You didn't hear me?"
"We heard something, but thought it was just someone playing a joke." said Tammy, looking truly concerned "Are you alright? Did you fall?"
"Yeah, I tripped, but Jason helped me up and to find you guys.. Man, what are you guys doing so far away anyhow?"
"Jason?" my sister said, looking first to Tammy, and then back to me.
"Yeah, Jason. Cute guy, really sweet, friend of yours..." I said sarcastically
"Sis, we're the only ones out here. You couldn't have seen Jason."
"Yes I did, He was right over there when I lost track of him... he has to still be around" I said, pointing to the angel statue. "JASON!! JASON WHERE ARE YOU?" I'm hollered, walking towards the angel.
"Byn, wait.." said my sister. "Are you SERIOUS about this?" she said, looking genuinely freaked.
"Yes I'm serious... he was over here." I said, stopping at the base of the angel.
My sister and Tammy walked up beside me, and Tammy pointed at the inscription on the angel. "Theres no way you could have seen Jason. He's been dead for six months now"
WHOA!!!!!!!!!!! What a story--was Jason at one time a real friend of your sister and her friend? That is too freaky--I have seen a spirit of a man walking up the street--He had vey sharp features--as he walked he turned his head--made eye contact with me and then he vanished. I found it very unnerving--my husband was told one night as he came home to get out of here. It seems Jason was a very nice spirit in life and after.
The owatonna glowing grave exists (to the best of my knowledge), my sis and tammy and jason are all real people, but thankfully all still alive. I showed this story to Jason and my sis, and Jason wasn't too impressed (he kept thinking I meant that I WANTED him to die, and thats just not it at all :) )
BTW - Thanks for the folder Adam :)
